I am excited to try this strategy. I have a chatty class. If it works well, I will definitely start the year off next year with it.

Would love a video of this actually in action in the classroom. And I’m curious if it’s time-consuming or embarrassing if students are bringing up beans every time they blurt. Isn’t this like calling out students in front of the rest of the class for their behavior?

Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, I don't show these things taking place in a classroom setting out of respect for students' privacy. Students do not need to get up to put their beans in the jar. I usually have them sit the beans on the side of their desk and I take one when they blurt out.

Thanks a lot for your video, but to be honest I don't understand very well how it works. Are we rewarding them for talking or not talking? The part where you explain they get the beans and then they have to put them in the jar is where I got lost. They have to put the beans in the Blurt Jar when they interrupt the teacher or when? I'll appreciate you can repsond to my questions :)

Hi Lourdes! Students put their blurt beans in the jar when they call out or are talking. The blurt jar is just for storing excess beans. At the end of the day, students put their left over beans in the prize jar. They are rewarded for not having to use these beans during the day, which means they weren't calling out or talking. Hope this helps!

Where do your kids keep their beans during the day?

Hi Graciela! You can give students a Ziploc bag or pouch to keep in their desk. That is one of the easiest options.

Putting beans in a jar is disruptive.

I've actually found it to be a great way to redirect students and keep them focused. Of course, all classes are different. While this works with some it may not work with others.

@Eunice Gonzalez I came here to say the same. Those beans would totally be projectiles in 2 seconds.

So, why are students not allowed to talk?
Brain science shows that learning is a social activity. So how does real learning take place if the only person speaking is the teacher?
We may be in the 21st century, but the schooling system is stuck in the industrial age of the 1800s.

Why don't you become a teacher and you will be able to answer your own question.
Hint: in order to teach, or to set them up in a learning activity ( where they can talk between themselves) they need to listen.
