Musician REACTS to Sealed Vessel / Pure Vessel (Hollow Knight)!

- Today, we delve into 2 gorgeous tracks from the Hollow Knight Soundtrack:
1️⃣ Sealed Vessel
2️⃣ Pure Vessel
Usage of motifs are so effective in these kinds of games! It reminds me of Ori and the Blind Forest which has a central motif that can be heard all throughout the OST. Being able to establish a simple, sing-able melody in itself can be tough, but also manipulating it and re-using it in other tracks is a whole different skill! I can't wait to hear more of Christopher Larkin's work, hopefully we can get some Silksong news soon??

Desperation is the word I’d use to describe this track. All the plans they had to save everything, all the suffering and sacrifices. All for nought.
and in Pure Vessel it gives us a sensation of duty and loyalty the Hollow Knight had back at his finest era, before the infection pandemonium. truly masterpieces, I love this game
@@matheus-ne6zo 100% agree
@@matheus-ne6zo I don't think Pure Vessel is the Hollow Knight in its Prime. It's what the Hollow Knight was supposed to be and fell short of from the outset.
It is enhanced beyond what it ever could be thanks to atunement with the Godseekers.
Pure Vessel is not the Hollow Knight, it is the Mighty God of Nothingness.
The only boss we actually see in his prime is Ogrim in his dreamfight.
The Hollow Knight just wanted to make his father (Pale King) pround
@MandiiMandarynka And that is the heartbreaking tragedy.
Wanting things is a sign of possessing a will.
But to actually be what the Pale King wanted from it requires lacking will.
Grimm and Nightmare King Grim are definitely something you might want to listen.
@@chonifer Those are on the list already, so I'll do them soon!
@@TeraCMusic Waiting already! I think you will love them! looking forward to watching your reaction
Queens gardens is also amazing
@@Dandiest-o3v hell yes
This song within context is one of my favorite musical pieces ever written. The use of different leitmotifs that are introduced in the game's earlier tracks are used to remind the player of this boss's connections to the story, certain characters you've learned about/met, and you yourself. The sequence used never really reaches anywhere, as you noticed by the "lack of drop", which symbolizes a sort of desperate/useless attempt to get somewhere that you can never reach. This idea holds a lot of significance for this boss specifically when you know its story. And the mode used in the song really gives you a sense of dread/sadness, especially in the second phase of the boss. It isn't the normal upbeat/confident/bombastic boss battle music that keeps you on your toes and envelops you with fast-paced runs and loud percussion, but rather a slow, somber climb that slows the pace of the fight and makes you feel wrong for even fighting at all. It's perfectly written for the emotional/story-driven aspects of its purpose imo!
"False knight" "Mantis Lords" and "Nosk" are really good ones!
The vast majority of the ost is connected in some way. Many of the songs represent a lot of story within the game, and tell much more.
@@lezno3550 Nosk is a personal favourite for me.
It's not just how creeped out you feel but also how brazenly violent it is.
Pure vessel is more orchestric and sounds more majestic too on purpose, its more leveled, its the purest form, because it shows a glimpse of what once was, while all was good in the world, royalty, loyalty, duty and honor, even a bit of naivity of youth, before corruption took place and the truth was revealed. And everything become tainted. A sacrifice had to be made. The sealed vessel is the form after the corruption and sacrifice takes place, a sad form of existence, a shell of its former self, its more sad and somber in nature, its more desperate, it has lost control, its in fact all about tragic irony, one of the worst and most tragic of tales. But a shimmer of hope still remains cause our little knight protagonist can offer another sacrifice for another shot at the cycle of life.
Wow, you put that beautifully, I didn't realize how good the story of Hollow Knight was.
god, sealed vessel might genuinely be one of my favorite tracks ever. it always hits me LMAO
At the end of the sealed vessel track, you Can hear a little bit of the main theme of the game
The litemotif in these two tracks has a lot of placement in the game, almost like a thread to follow, I'm looking forward to see if and when you catch onto the moments 😊
Oooh looking forward to hearing more then!
For context, (heavy spoilers ahead, of course) when Sealed Vessel sounds youre going to fight The Hollow Knight (THK for short), which to do so you first had to unseal them. Why were they sealed? Well they were created with the sole purpose to "hold" the infection (this infections makes everyone like act like a violent zombie, since it controls the mind) within themselves and then get sealed so no one can get infected, sadly it didnt work quite right and the infection started spreading, so you as the player, controlling another vessel, went there to kill the failed vessel so you can hold it within yourself, propagating this statis in which the kingdom is.
A cool detail is that even for a boss fight, this track is dynamic, to begin with, the strings that start playing at 0:40 to 0:56 doing tremolo, for each string theres a chain the player physically breaks (to unseal the vessel), so the track doesnt continues until you dont break them all. But not only that, at 2:49 you hear a scream from the vessel and the track changes drastically, that happens because they enter in 2nd phase, but instead of being harder, THK starts stabbing themselves, because they understand what are you trying to do and they understand that they must die, heche why the tracks becomes sad.
Finally, at 6:16, you defeat the Vessel and took their place, from now own, what you hear is a cinematic playing.
@@Luky.73 Didn't read too much since I am planning on playing/streaming the game, but appreciate the context!!
@@TeraCMusic oh dont worry then, im glad i warned about the spoilers, i didnt knew if you wanted or not since you asked for context
@@TeraCMusic Where can i follow your playthrough?
@SoL_ismyname I'll honestly probably just stream it on this channel! I don't have a date set right now, but I'll make a community post once I do 🎶
@TeraCMusic Well, we'll all just subscribe to that one anyway lol
Dung Defender is a track that is, despite its name, genuinely really good. It plays for an optional boss that's a bit out of the way, but it's arguably one of the most exciting tracks in the game.
DOHMA DOHMA DOHMA!!!!! AAAHHAHAHAHA!!!
Hopefully these reactions vids summon silk song from the depths of team cherry
i repeatedly tear up whenever listening to this track, it overwhelmes my emotional capacities to such a high extent, it's amazingly beautiful
You NEED to hear and react to Mantis lords and gods and glory
So for context: Sealed Vessel is the theme that plays while you're fighting "The Hollow Knight", one of the final bosses of the game. Pure Vessel is part of the last big update in which you can fight a "pure" form of the Hollow Knight, in its prime, untouched by the corruptive infection it holds in the base game.
Not the hollow knight in its prime, but rather what it was supposed to be, a vessel with no will to break and truly hollow. It is what would have been if sealed vessel hadn't gotten attached to the pale king
I adore your reactions, I love that you explain the music terminology and put examples in the video! It makes understanding what your saying (as someone who loves music, but has no idea the actual terms and such) a whole lot easier. I can't wait to see more Hollow Knight reactions from you if you so choose to do more
@@steptical6667 Thank you so so much!! This is exactly what I want to do with these reactions when I can - I love educating others and teaching them something new so they walk away from watching my video with even just 1 cool thing they didn't know before 💜
The "bombastic drop" at 6:25 didnt happen because thats the ending cutscene, it makes way more sense if you see it
I cannot listen to Sealed Vesel without shedding tears, knowing the desperate, agonising plea for mercy that is the fight for that song. And all the while, it is just magnifiscent and beautifull musically.
7:07 Technically the track _is_ over at this point, the epilogue they added in the OST doesn't really belong there, in the game it is heard after a different track (Radiance).
Isn't it also heard in the sealed vessel ending? I don't remember exactly it's been a while
Almost a disservice to not do Sealed Vessel into Radiance instead of Pure Vessel, but there is no way to know that without playing the game. Still fantastic that people are still being introduced to what is probably my favorite overall game OST. There are no real flops in the entire OST, the entire thing is engaging, individualized but connected, and beautifully done. Christopher Larkin deserves all the praise and more imo.
@@Puzzlesocks absolutely. Larkin is the man. He deserves way more credit. This OST is stupidly good
Please try White Palace and Pale Court - it has the best melody and done in 2 different orchestrations, gives the most classical chamber vibes if you like that
@@vincent4805 I think they are both on my list but I'll double check!
That ending theme in Sealed Vessel just kills me, good video 👍
I heard the OST before I ever heard about the game, and it's pretty much the main reason I decided to play it. Although it's not really something I'd play otherwise, I am so happy I did! I fell in love with it, especially the fluid movement and art style.
the Sealed Vessel plays during one of the Final Bosses of the game, and the Pure Vessel plays when fighting a version of that same boss within a dream, where it is much MUCH stronger and capable of battle
my suggestion for the next themes to listen to would be the Mantis Lords and their dream variant, the Sisters of Battle. it's got a Harpsichord!
To give some added context to Sealed Vessel, with a major spoiler warning for the fight, this is one of thefinal bosses in the game and the fight goes in two stages.
The start is the epic battle against a foe several times your size, trading blows and dodging its arena-wide charges and AOE's, and the first shift in tone to the slower, quieter melody is when it starts to weaken. The Hollow Knight starts to stumble in its moves, sometimes collapsing to its knees after attacking, and even starts to stab itself with its own nail. as you fight it just get weaker and weaker, sometimes barely able to swing at you before collapsing.
This fight is so tragic and heartbreaking, you almost feel like it's trying to help you kill it when it starts to stab itself, and the end feels like a mercy. One of my favorite scores in the game, I highly recommend looking up a video of the fight itself if you're interested :]
Basically, sealed vessel becomes very slow and sad because the hollow knight (the boss) begins stabbing itself, likely in desperation to help you defeat it along with the infection that plagues it as well as the world around it.
The suprise jumps (the violin the drop and the end) are diefferejt phases of the boss and endings after it
finally she reacted to this wonderful track 🙏
Sealed Vessel is one of my favorite tracks of all time, it's beautiful and sad at the same time, it makes you feel the moment when you playing
8:01 did you notice Hollow Knight's main theme being played here?
@@THe104_ Oh man, I missed it! But I hear it now, so cool! 🎶 I filmed this before I made my cover of the Main Theme so that's probably why I didn't notice it 😅
@TeraCMusic oohh i see, glad you noticed it now 🤍
There’s also a bit that is the same as the opening scene. The way it ties back is incredible.
I’d love to hear Pale Court! It’s the only OST that’s played by a live orchestra; it’s very beautiful and interesting to listen to
In this one Christopher Larking cuts down vessel theme into a [leit]motif and essentially Beetthoven 5's on it.
If you want to remind yourself of the vessel theme, just listen "Hollow Knight" again.
Pure vessel is really a remake of Sealed vessel, or at least that is what it starts out as. it represents what the Sealed Vessel was supposed to be:
No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.
Truth, Beauty, and Hatred should be on the list as well, personal favorite
another track that you wont hear until the later bits of the game is the Grimm Troupe, and it's my personal favorite. good analysis as always!
I always miss the scream that's supposed to come between the build up and the first hit of Sealed Vessel
Can’t wait to see the reaction to the Grimm troupes themes
I really hope you keep doing this reactions! (and covers, maybe)
That's the plan! And maybe some other cool content (like attempting to compose in the same style as the original composers) 🎶
We need the Broken Vessel too
7:47 still makes tears peak out...
the vessel motif is one of the most striking in the game, for sure lends from Barber's Adagio.
reacting to only TWO hollow knight music per video is like eating only TWO noodle out of a whole maccaroni🥲
@@wlevy3190 I reacted to 2 tho 🤣
@TeraCMusic nah idk what you talking about 👀
Might be my favorite boss theme from this game.
If you ever get around to it listening to Radiance track from this game, you could then tie it up with a boss reaction video.
Since you mentioned Leitmotifs in the video and in the description, I'd highly suggest Death's Door, or any work from David Fenn, really. Let it be him connecting the games Titan Souls and Death's Door or the main Motifs in Death's Door itself. Personally, the tracks "Death's Door", "Gravedigger's Heart" and "Gravedigger's Request" are on of his best examples. He sets two different motifs in each and combines them in a single one during a boss fight, absolutely stunning :D
Generally, awesome reaction, it was really fun to listen to and hear someone else share their thought's in analysing the two tracks, especially from the perspective of someone who doesn't know anything about the game ^^
Hey @TeraCMusic, if you want to see the story with music I recommend to watch the sealed vessel fight + "Dream no more" ending since I think it is the full version.
I actually have the official piano sheet music for this song! Let’s just say it isn’t for the faint of heart…
Anyways, I thought I’d recommend “The Mantis Lords” as a good listen from the game too! The first time I heard the song was so amazing. Best boss I’ve ever fought besides our dear sealed vessel the Hollow Knight.
I also recommend “Broken Vessel.” It perfectly captures the right mood and it’s just- AAA. It’s great.
Edit: Also, ‘rhythmic stabbing” is so ironic and definitely not a coincidence of… some certain things. I won’t spoil what happens in the boss fight for anyone that hasn’t done or seen it (though it isn’t a huge spoiler) but I love that Christopher Larkin added that little touch.
You should really listen to dung defender and White defender, such underrated tracks imo
If you want to explore full "baroqueness" of Christopher Larkin then listen to "Gods and Glory" track
Add Mantis Lords to that list
The game hasn't come out yet but the devs have released some of the OST so I would heavily recommend you listen to "Une vie a peindre" from Expedition 33. It's an 11 min song but it's phenomenal and been on repeat for me lol
I suggest Dung Defender and White Defender for a similar, yet different, contrast.
Quite the interesting two to listen to together. SPOILERS IN READ MORE!
Sealed Vessel is the song for the final boss, The Hollow Knight (though there are final final and final final final bosses), who was the vessel meant to contain the infection but failed. Pure Vessel is what the Pale King wanted The Hollow Knight to be, a full and perfect container for the infection, completely empty of any traits, just a containment for the final final boss, Radiance, and the infection to save the kingdom. Completely different but similar as well.
Bravo we love hollow knight
please listen to Pale Court (or the whole soundtrack please 😂). Loved this vid, seeing you enjoy the music makes me happy.
8:01 Delicate?! Lol! As in “delicate flower”? Isn’t that the theme that plays only with the delicate flower ending? Maybe I’m mistaken, but in any case, Christopher Larkin is a master.
10 Time pt. 1 Present by christopher larkin from the game tohu is another masterpiece, very underrated imo pls take a look you won't be disappointed and don't forget those 2 silksong ost samples they are FIRE 🔥
Spoilers for hollow knight
So the tldr of the premise is that there's an infection they tried to contain inside of an "empty living vessel", due to it not being as empty as they they thought, it turned out to be a temporary solution and the vessel began leaking, so you have to deal with it.
the track has you freeing the boss exactly when you got jumpscared, At 3:22 they decided to include the scream of the boss in the track (which at this point it has done twice before in game including alongside the jumpscare) and the mood shifts here as the boss' consciousness emerges from the layers of madness and starts stabbing itself to aid you in putting an end to it, but it backfires as the wounds it inflicted on itself spew harmful toxines and the thing that has made it lose its sanity, due to it being fed up with you and/or the boss also starts just RAGDOLLING it, slaming it against the floor trying to hit you with its body as if the control that thing excerts over it went from first person to someone just picking up a doll, as the fight goes on at 4:00 starts going up and up, telling you that you are near the end, it's the final stretch. perhaps around here? 5:50 you have beaten the boss so bad it walks slowly towards you, limping, tired, all semblance of danger gone, not even whatever that afflicts it can go beyond the limits of the flesh or maybe this is the boss in a final act of control... then (depending on the ending you get)
a) 6:13 you absorb, through the fatal wounds of your sibling, THE hollow knight itself, the very same thing that drove it mad, chains imbued with magic drop from the ceiling containing you as you take its place as the new hollow knight, containing this "thing" for an undefined; but probably much more finite span of time than we'd like
b) if you do certain things, at some point during the home stretch a third sibling appears, a sister to you and it, and after you fight a "secret" boss, the infection that drove your sibling insane and threatened to do the smae to everyone, after the fight we go back to the physical world and we hear this 7:09 a pool of this black liquid that forms part of all the siblings known as "the void" has formed at some point during the final battle and as it is being drained away our sister rises up, scans the environment, no signs of the hollow knight nor the knight (us) and then she sees our broken mask, at 7:48 we have a hard cut to a place known as the abyss or the birthplace where the ghosts of the (and I am not exaggerating) thousands of our siblings who are aware of what happened because they all showed up in the fight against the secret final boss to help, with it gone they can finally rest in peace
Meanwhile pure vessel is what sealed vessel was supposed to be, we are Fighting our sibling with all of its mental faculties intact with the purpose of attuning through combat some form of godly energy to lure the infection (btw this infection is a god herself) and after defeating her there you and most of your siblings fuse which allows you to carry out mass deicide, bc they all suck, until the only ones left are your mom, a giant snail, the king of nightmares (don't worry about him, he's a chill dude) and technically the fusion of you and your siblings… which at this point, if you had some forethought (or were lucky and just did the correct thing as an act of kindness) you can also off the new you, who seems to be a rampaging monster [don't take this last read as Gospel as this whole section is sort of up in the air]
this song is better appreciated with context, for example the initial part up until 1:10 serves as an introduction to the boss fight (sorry, spoiler lol)
at 2:52 something sad happens during the fight, hence why the melody gets sadder
and from 7:09 to 8:25 is basically the ending cinematic
Now do Mantis Lords/Sisters of Battle! 😃
Awesome reaction! Hollow Knight is still on my pile of shame, I have to admit 🙈.
Can’t wait for more Stellar Blade though! 👀
Keep on rocking 🤘🏻 I really enjoy your content.
It’s not Hollow Knight, but I would really recommend the Rain World OST!
2:32 And more than rhythmic...
I feel like Hollow Knight's OST seems to take a TON of inspiration from Vivaldi, specifically.
Indeed, these are beautiful tracks.
