    The Loki is also perfect to stack with the other 5" x 3.5" series from Schiit. I rarely do anything on those fancy new age computers. That is the biggest issue for me with the Mini DSP.
    I'm pissed at automakers for taking away equalizers. Doug Demuro actually made fun of a 7 band equalizer in an old Mitsubishi I think it was. Why ? Every $50 boombox used to have at least a 3 or 5 band EQ. Now it's all presets if any. I give zero fucks what the designer thought sounded good. They almost all sound like ass.
    Equalizers are great, especially if the system is mediocre, but even if it's an awesome system, unlike headphones or home speakers, replacing car audio is far more labor intensive and costly. If you give me an upgraded system, like a Harmon Kardon 11 speaker bazillion watt monster, and it doesn't have a sub woofer, you're wrong. GM. Cunts. If it doesn't have an EQ or has preset EQs, or just treble and bass and maybe mid, then you're wrong. Fucking wrong.
    People are ruining audio by buying mono Bluetooth speakers and shitty earbuds. So few people actually ENJOY music for all it's worth anymore. Thank God for companies like this, and other enthusiasts like you people.
    EQs are important because everyone's ears are different. Eardrums are slightly different sizes and thicknesses and we have all experienced different exposures to loud noises, and so on. EQ everything. If you want to be flat, fine, you do you, but let me create what sounds good to my ears, with my favorite music. 🤙🏼

    The Mini DSP digitally processes the audio, though. The Loki is pure analogue. This is an important distinction for many people. If you simply want to EQ a signal, you can tweak it to hell with any laptop or phone..

      Thanks. As someone who wanted both analog and digital processing, this is very important to me.

    If you want to stay all analog, the Loki wins. The mini-DSP adds extra ADC - DAC conversions at 24/192 - In my system I lost some soundstage due to that processing - very easy to tell in AB testing (there is no analog bypass, once the mini is inline, the conversion happens) For versatility, the miniDSP is massively better value & power.

    An important thing is the fact that the DSP is a DAC as well, so to use its Eq it has to be used via digital, between source and amp. But if you happen to have a better DAC than that in the DSP then there is no point, because to bypass the DSP's DAC you no longer get to use its Eq. Better to get the Schiit if you have a very good DAC already.

    So the miniDSP is for people who don't care about the quality of their source, since whatever you feed into it will run through its entry level DAC. I'm not saying it's gonna sound bad, just that people with high quality source might wanna opt for the Loki.

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      IDK man. I just use the dac on the miniDSP HD for my entire front end of my living room. Every speaker you get an evaluation of here on this channel, Fiber input on the miniDSP HD in my living room.
      Now feeding a good dac THROUGH it via analog. That is an extra conversion from AtoD then DtoA. Probably not worth it. But still. What the DSP can fix might surpass any quality loss you suffer in that path.

      Yeah, it's quite strange that these very different devices were even compared. One's basically a USB sound card with DSP effects built in, including a DAC and ADC. The other devices work strictly in the analog domain. They are not comparable products. No amazon affiliate link for JDS and Schiit though.

    MiniDSP while powerful is an entirely different application for me. The Loki is good for on the fly adjustment of the signal, all analog with true pass-through ... basic tone control EQ with well-placed band adjustments. I use it in a pre-out/main-in loop on an old receiver to adjust the hugely varied sources in that feed the system: from digital streams, TV/movie sound, and two different turntables with very different cartridges, and of course the varied music each of those send. It's like an oldschool tone adjustment on a receiver, or a small 4-band sitting off to the side (actually that's exactly what it is). For all of this, for these sorts of quick adjustments even from album-to-album or song-to-song I don't want to pull up an app or hope that one of my MiniDSP presets will give me exactly what I want in that moment. Of course it *can* but I don't want it takes to long and is too fiddly in the app.... I just want to slightly turn a knob.
    The mini is awesome for a myriad of other reasons, but again... it's just not the same thing.

    I'm happy with the Schiit Loki. It does the job very well. Subtle changes in the sub bass for a bit more extension (20 Hz at 2 o' clock setting) and a little more spark in the treble (8 kHz also 2 o' clock setting) made my beloved JM Reynaud Offrande speakers really sing.

  • @anonymoususer8365
    @anonymoususer8365 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This area of the home audio market is sadly lacking. All of the reasonably priced rack stuff I've seen does not include a "stereo link" button... so you're stuck adjusting levels individually for each channel. I don't like the bump graphics on the Loki. This is particularly absurd with the 6 band Lokius. Treat us like adults and give us frequencies. Using bump graphics is a wasted opportunity for people to get educated on what frequency range corresponds to what sound they're hearing. I also find it really gross that they price gouge on silver boxes. I've considered their products in the past, but this has always deterred me on principle. Schiit indeed. You don't see Geshelli charging for color on their metal boxes.
    The Behringer MiniFBQ (with a silver face!) is getting the job done for now, but I read somewhere that it was discontinued and now the price has jumped on Amazon. So I worry about what my options will be if/when that box dies. The 75Hz low cut button is perfect for the Jamo S801 speakers at my desktop, and I've grown quite fond of the stereo pair of (LED) VU meters.

      Thing is that if I wanted to I have full control in my playback app. Doesn't work for web or streaming. But the problem is just as Z says the range is too high so you have only a few clicks of adjustment before it just sounds f'd up. I think it would be cool to do the minidspHD with the wifi. You can then control volume from android and looks like soon the web. Would still have to build the profiles on windows or OSX. Maybe my next job will make me have a PC? But that does add $70 to the price.

So, I’m looking for a solution for the amplifier. The amp will just be a power amp. No volume! I was looking at the Schitt stuff. Hence watching this review. I own a Loki. It's not about fine adjustment to remove or cover flaws. It's about gentle, broad strokes to add some flavour to the sound.
      I use Hifiman he400i headphones. The Loki adds some deep bass, less mid bass to avoid muddy sound, and then subtract some treble. It doesn't give me a neutral sound, it gives me bass hump with planar speed and slam and takes the edge off some harshness. Cheaper than buying a more expensive headphone ;)

    I bought the miniDSP HD based on your review and learned by experience that it's unusable with my efficient Zu speakers; there's audible hiss from my listening positions even with a -9dB cut to input our output. This issue is widely reported by other owners of efficient speakers. The Loki doesn't add distortion/noise to the music I'm listening to, while allowing me to tweak treble and bass issues. I haven't tried the miniDSP with my headphone setups but I can't think of a reason why I need a break-out box for DSP for a computer-based headphone setup because I can do all my EQ in software before it hits my DAC.

    Have original Loki and run off either Modi 3 or iFi Zen Dac. My hearing is weird that no matter what speakers I have I am missing upper treble unless I dial in the Loki. Klipsch, Martin Logan, any of them. My first Modi 3 died a few months after buying and it took Schiit a month to figure out they needed to replace the circuit board. I use Audirvana Studio player on my iMac which recognizes either Dac and works with Tidal and Qobuz within the player. iFi now has the Zen Dac V2 out with some changes. you are right. no, not about the mini dsp(yes it does do alot if this and that) but i am going to buy the loki because i want the knobs!!! why? because i just want a simple headphone e q adjustment, not something i have to program. also, i dont need a bunch of cables going in all sorts of directions. LOKI FOR ME!!!

    I feel I should pick up the MiniDSP for my car, but man I still want the Loki for my home music. Some records just seem poorly made... or maybe they did what they wanted and i love the songs but hate the mixing. I got an original pressing of Jane's Addiction's 'Nothing's Shocking' recently and boy do the drums and bass sound buried. That's when I first started eyeing the Loki, I just can't see 4 profiles being enough when I have Phono+DAC+different headphones+different recordings to fix...
    Now... I just need to save enough money to do my whole Schiit order with a Jotunheim and maybe a lil Magni for my electronic drum setup... that's hitting almost $1400 Australian with shipping... fuuuuck.

Ironically I just got downvoted to hell for requesting a review of sonarworks on your sub reddit smh the ignorance on there is astounding. Someone literally called it snake oil...

    You need more than 3 bands, though... More like 10 or more to actually properly calibrate any speakers. - None of them are perfect or even close.
    Speakers (including headphones) without equalization is like an uncalibrated screen. Tough if you don't like it.

    Isn’t this digital EQ vs. analog EQ? Not quite the same, is it?! If a man has a nice DAC, a man will choose the analog EQ, no question about it. Of course a man can live without EITHER of the two.

  • @mikelo303
    @mikelo303 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah. You talk about mini dsp being superior in technicality but does it actually sound better? I doubt it. It is digital so I am sure they did not spend top dollar on AD/DA converters within this price. When Shiit is completely analog unit. SO I dare you to compare both of them side by side and tell me which one is more transparent and better sounding. I am sure it will be Shiit.

      @cl2nden1st89 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheFeelsPolice The Subjective is totally fine. Sure, they went overboard with the +(-) 14 dB gain this time. BUT it doesn’t colour the sound apart from when you actually turn the knobs. You just have to be very careful when adjusting the knobs. I’ve changed the knobs on mine to bigger ones which makes adjusting them ever slightly better. I suggest looking at the Taiss aluminum rotary knobs (6mm shaft, 20x17mm height) on amazon to switch over your bass and treble knobs. I watch zeos for occasional entertainment, and don’t use his content to influence my audio shopping choices.

    I have two Loki and I but one of them developed a low frequency buzz that comes in and out when 1st powered up then stays on permanently, by having two of them I was able swap location and PS and the buzz followed the Loki. Please let me know if any of you had this issue and how you solved it.

    Mr Z, greetings from Puerto Rico.
    A have a pair of Edifier s3000pro and i feel like the dac on then is pretty good,so I was wandering would the loki work on my speakers and if it does what would be your combination of components that you would use? I only use a tablet or cell phone for music source, no computers. I trust your opinion and really enjoy your content.

    The mini dsp is pointless if you’re using it with a computer or htpc because you can get software probably even free software that does pretty much everything it does and way more

    Great info!! Does the miniDSP have an app to control it? Any way to control it without a computer? How do you feel about the proaudio stuff like the dbx 215s? Running from a bluetooth module (using streaming from phone) via RCA into a receiver...super simple.

    Stereo parametric EQs are expensive AF. (Elysia xfilter)
    Single channel parametric EQs but two of them are less expensive but a royal pain in the back to get set equally. (Rolls RPQ 160b)
    So how does fixing the frequency range they influence make them so cheap?!
    You know what? I just get a desktop mixer with 4 mono channels, each with 3 EQ bands and abuse that! HA!

    I'm looking for an affordable workplace setup to make listening experience better. My source is a crappy laptop, so I appreciate the Loki being analog as the software policy at my work is majorly locked down. I wouldn't be able to use the MiniDSP. Nothing is going to be great, but at least I can try to improve it some.

    I bought the Loki to put in my phono stage chain. I have very warm low impedance low output speakers. Added loads of sparkle and opened more imaging in the midrange. Beautiful to clean up poor recordings. That is why I bought it. Simple device. Worth every penny.

    my dream project is a powered 4 way (12" sub, 6-8" woofer, dome mid, amt tweeter) using a mini dsp hd as an active crossover with each output going straight out through an amp to a driver. set into a big tower, with a separate compartment for the sub and like...a drawer between the sub and the other drivers with all the electronics in it. problem is even diy it'd cost over 1000 to build 2 of them...

Even in this video when I heard the sound I cringed. Thankfully, other than turning off the Magni 3 I don't have to do it often. I think it must be an OCD trigger.
