    Forging a hand held Flatter from the BIGGEST spring ive ever seen!!
    This spring is from a big lorry here in the uk, i dont know what it is made of all i know is it hardens in oil with heat treatment really well. I have made a lot of small tooling from this but i want to create a lot more and see what it serves best for, PLUS i will make myself some new tools for the workshop.
    the hand held flatter is the perfect blacksmithing tool for one person forging when there is no smith and striker. ive been wanting to make a flatter for years now, and finally managed to make one. i would like to make some more tools like this, hand held easy to transport tooling.

    Very nice Nathan and I like the fact that it can be hand held. This way you can work by yourself. Please keep the videos coming!

    Big spring, but you still gathered it a lot. Very nice hammer work. Great touch. Amazing what a powerhammer can do with the right touch. Excellent tool. Satisfying to make and watch. I love making tools to make tools. You know what that satisfaction feels like!

    Very interesting technique with the super aggressive spreading under the press using that triangular fuller. I've seen flatters made before but the usual approach is just swage block+sledgehammer.

    • @workingwithiron
      @workingwithiron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yeh i would have gone that way too with the swage but i didnt start with square bar or a large enough section so i had to push it out as far as i could. its the wrong way to make it if i wanted to be efficient but it showed that material can go wherever its needed with the right approach. i learned a lot doing it that way so im glad i didnt do the standard way as we have all seen.

    That leaf spring came from a big rig. I have some of those in my shop. Great find. Very nice job turned out very well. Great video. Can't wait to see more videos. Hopefully you get great use out of it my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge on. Keep making. God bless.

    That's a really great piece of kit. I like the hand guard. Now stop "flexing" with the spring and see what else you can find 😉
