Love your informative dialogue. Have watched many Blacksmithing videos,but yours is the first to advise against hardening hot punches,with sounds reasons given as to why not.
I agree with not wanting to use a high carbon steel for drifts, but what about a mangnese steel? Which are a fair bit tougher and more resistant to bending/musrooming when getting a decent whalloping? That is at least what some of my colleagues here in the Netherlands tend to do.

Sounds like a good idea. Not one I've tried but sounds like time for an experiment
