    when you want to add lines onto the pages go to template, type in teacher and the first template was a page of lines with 2 objects that I clicked on and deleted. That left just the lines so it was much easier than doing individual lines

    Hey Caroline, first off, your videos are so so useful. Thank you for making them! I had a question about using free stock photos in canva. From what I understand, they are pulled from Unsplash and similar websites, correct? And Unsplash needs you to change up the photo and 'make it your own' such that there's a difference between that and the original photograph. In that case, is it okay to use the background images as-is (such as this marble background)?

    • @MyFreedomEmpire
      @MyFreedomEmpire  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! 😄 You would have to follow whatever the license of the photo says that you need to do. I'm not 100% sure where Canva gets the images from or their license requirements, I usually use other stock photo websites for images.

  • @chariots8x230
    @chariots8x230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I’ve been binge watching many of your videos and I find them very helpful! I want to get started making books soon but there are a few things that I need to understand better before starting. One of these things that I’d like to learn more about is what Amazon considers duplicate content, and how to avoid getting in trouble with Amazon over duplicate content. For example, in a video that I watched, I heard that using public domain work is not recommended because it may lead to “duplicate content issues” with Amazon. I’m not exactly sure what was meant by this though. I don’t know if it has anything to do with people not modifying the work before posting it on Amazon, or if this type of content is just not acceptable at all. I wonder how Amazon’s duplicate content rules would apply to pictures.
    I’d love some suggestions on where people who create KDP books get their images from.
    In addition to this, I definitely need to figure out how image licenses work and how to properly research images before using them in a book. If I use them, I’m not sure if I have the right to modify them, or use them as is.
    I really don’t know much about how any of this works, and I’m just not sure how to properly do the research. I’ve tried reading the terms of use in websites but they are always very long and confusing.
    So, I’m hesitant to create anything until I know for sure how to avoid getting into trouble with copyright and trademark laws. I need to be clear about my rights to using an image, before I decide to use it.
    It can be pretty confusing in my opinion. Even free images on Canva don’t seem to be guaranteed, as Canva states in their website “We can’t guarantee that any free images, music and video files have the appropriate releases for commercial use.”

    • @MyFreedomEmpire
      @MyFreedomEmpire  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazon allows the use of public domain works as long as you annotate, illustrate or translate it. In terms of images, yes the legal jargon can be confusing. If you are
      concerned about understanding the licenses correctly, you can speak to an IP lawyer for clarification. Alternatively, you can create your own illustrations or hires someone to do it for you.

    • @chariots8x230
      @chariots8x230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MyFreedomEmpire Thank you again for the reply! :) I guess I'm just trying to be super cautious before I create or submit anything. Since I'm just starting out, I can't afford to talk to any lawyers for advice or hire someone to create illustrations for me. I have to rely on free or affordable methods to get the images that I need.
      I think the important place to start is to first find good websites where I can get images from, and to also understand image licenses and my rights to those images. I tried reading into the terms of use in these websites that offer images, but it turned out to be a very long reading and they use some terminology that I'm not yet familiar with. It was difficult to understand, but maybe I wasn't looking at the right thing. These websites can be very wordy and it's not always clear where to find the information that I'm looking for.
      Also, I think I might have to research the meaning of individual jargon that they commonly use in order to hopefully break down the message better.

I realized that I did not put margins. Is that okay? I mean is it a new trend without margins? Will it be bought by people as it has no margins? 😅

    • @MyFreedomEmpire
      @MyFreedomEmpire  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure what you mean by having margins on the cover. Covers are created differently to interiors so you don't use margins as such but you just want to make sure all your cover elements are within the areas where Amazon trims the book. It won't let you upload a cover where there are elements outside the trim anyway, so you would've got an error message if you had anything in the wrong spot.

    How do you set up in Canva for books where left and right pages need to be different i.e. no bleed on the inside of left hand pages (even numbered) and no bleed on the inside of right hand (odd numbered) pages. Does Canva have any automated settings to achieve that or is is it copy and paste alternate pages.

    Hi, This is a great video, I'm ready to jump into this waters, I have 2 questions:
    1.- Do you recommend Book Bolt or Tangent Templates to start?
    2.- About the author, do you recommend using your name or create one ?
    Please continue to create great videos, thank you for your time and have a great day!

    • @MyFreedomEmpire
      @MyFreedomEmpire  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you! I've never used tangent templates so can't really comment on them. Book Bolt don't have a huge range so I would just go with whoever has what you need and which ones look the most professional.
      With the author name, it's really what suits you and how you want to run your business. If you want to be the face of your brand then use your own name. If you don't want your name to be out in the public - a lot of us as authors and publishers use pen names - then create an author name to publish your books under.

    If I saved the journal cover as a 6.125 by 9.25 can I resave it as 12. Something I forgot the measurements, but I put the journal cover as 6.125 and 9.25 can I reset it once it's been saved?? I'm pretty sure I put in the wrong measurements because when I saved it it wasn't doubled like yours was can you please tell me if I need to put the cover page as 12 inches by something in Canva or can I wait to upload it in KDP? • @MyFreedomEmpire
      @MyFreedomEmpire  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome! You could but you'd still be charged at the colour page price regardless of how may pages are in colour - which would give you a pretty high printing cost. Depending on your niche and type of book it may mean you can't price your book competitively.

    I have had a problem with my high-quality manuscript pdf upload which uploaded fine and looked fine in the preview however when I submitted the book and got a proof pdf from KDP it was a different story. • @MyFreedomEmpire
      @MyFreedomEmpire  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the book printed different to what you submitted it could have just been a printing error on Amazon's end. I have heard plenty of stories from customers receiving books that had other books pages inside or printed incorrectly etc. I would contact Amazon and speak to them about it and also ask for another copy to be sent to you and see if it was just a one off error sort of thing.

    • @MyFreedomEmpire
      @MyFreedomEmpire  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In this particular case, there aren't margins as the lines have bleed. If you are having issues using this method, perhaps try creating lines another way. Instead of using the text tool to create the lines, go to Elements and select Line. Then draw a line across the page, select the line weight and colour you want and then copy and paste this until you have enough lines on your page. Give that a try.
