Why am I paying my licence fee again?
I'm sure someone will figure out a way to jerry rig a traditional rooftop tent onto the Cybertruck without it being off-axis. Possibly a hinged crossbar setup that would allow the tent to maintain the slope of the roof/tonneau when its stowed for transport. On another note, there's an American company called Decked that makes a truck bed assembly which basically raises the floor height of the bed and replaces the empty space beneath with these huge customizable pullout drawers. Pretty hefty price tag, but very nifty and would pair well with this Cybertent situation. Is there a power outlet in the front trunk? If so, It would be a great place to put a top load refrigerator.
The tent is not a "mess". The guy didn't read the manual or listen well to instructions. But he still got it set up. And IMO it wouldn't be camping if it were just like sleeping at home. Be a little resilient. Tesla haters have to find something bad to say about it I guess.

Yea.. that would have been nice. But I do like the idea he had of bringing an electric blanket. That would be good enough and probably save a lot of power over running the AC.
1-2k depending on the brand. There are many clamshell models. I was cringing when he got in both times, because he didn't have the ladder locked so the open half of the clamshell was essentially being supported by the hinge and the fabric. Not good. Otherwise, great episode.
Can the Cybertruck get AC or heat with camp mode to the bed area? The benefit of having an EV for car camping is being able to have AC or heat running so confortable inside...
As far as I've read, the bed can be tempered. Though, maybee that was removed before launching, or never actually was made! But no point with that, if the hatch is open to let the air out. Then you just waist energy. The original "hard shell box type tent" we've been seeing, with doors and more, would be better for that. But I think such a solution would be more like $10-15 K or above, not "only $3K". And, as long as it can be connected to the beds outlet, it could have its own heater installed! But it would probably sell anyway, same as other boxed campers you could install on a pickup. Great option to a trailed house/camping wagon, but not good for driving range, as the original CT Truck tent box that could hide in the bed when travelling!
I thought I liked the Rivian, but I actually love the car. I hope to get one soon, although it will probably be a big problem in Europe. The new R2 and R3 look good too, but the pick-up is the best. The Cypertuck isn't my cup of tea, but it's definitely an interesting car too.
The CyberTent was just supposed to be a publicity stunt for the CyberTruck promotional event. Noone intended it to be actually used to spend the night in the outdoors.
Even as a Cybertruck fan I still would prefer Rivian's variant of caping tent. Looks simple to set up, just like any other Tesla to use. Why overcomplicate it?
I would take the CT based on how well it stows away. Not out in the rough with a tent bouncing around. How much does the tent cut the range hanging out in the wind.
They could've done a better job making the cybertruck tent easier to set up, and it's way too expensive for what it is. That said, I do love how small it folds up and how well integrated it is in the truck bed. The manual pump is dumb though, just use any plug in or battery powered pump.
You can buy roof top tents like the one on the Rivian for as low as $900. You can also spend a mint, so I'm not necessarily dinging the Tesla for that - but one VERY big point, you can put the standard RTT on any other normal kind of truck when you sell the Rivian, or on top of lots of SUVs/vans. Guess with the Tesla you have to hope the next buyer likes the outdoors.
@@Abebe345 that's fine, but that doesn't address what you do with the Cybertent(?) when you sell the Tesla - not like it's going to fit anything else. Point being, standard RTTs can be moved to your next vehicle, the Tesla can't.
@@danharold3087 And, how then is this tent that takes up most of the bed when it's stowed supposed to be moved onto another vehicle when you sell your Cybertruck? It fits nothing else, only the Cybertruck. So, when you sell it, that could be a real issue - a lot of people won't want that in their bed, etc. The one on the Rivian can be moved to your next vehicle.

06:11 "I don't read instructions ..." Fail. 🤦♀ Also, using a _manual_ pump with an electrical socket right there ... 🤷♀ But the tent can _clearly_ be improved; especially at $3k! 💭
I don't think any electric truck is great for big trips but 3k is actually a very normal price point for a nice roof top tent and surprisingly cheap for this thing. The fact that it's custom made for only that truck is crazy. There's no way they're making any money on those. A simple bed cap that takes less design work can easy run 5k+ especially for a newer truck with a new design that has't been out for a long time.
I think I'd rather just fold up the rear seats in the CT, toss an air mattress on the floor and call it a day. At least then you have heating/cooling. That tent is Cyberdumb.
Really wish they added an option to not open the trunk cover while leveling the truck for people who want to have the truck level but aren't using the cyber tent
Hand held is cheap, more powerful, and doesn't reduce your ability to move your car up and down. Rivian has to charge after couple uses up or down, isn't fast moving relatively, and using the compressor doesn't help. Trade offs.
11:34 - I would think that the ladder would provide structural support for the tent, but in this video it clearly does not. Are you supposed to tighten down the ladder? Asking because I don't know.
You're right! This was an user error (one of several) by thees guys! Should have adjusted the ladder so that it actually would support the folded out part. Or else, those hinges would snap one day (maybe even first day).
Cybertruckgets a lot of fud but it’s a cool looking truck and it handles so good with the steer by wire. Honestly having a giant generator at your work site is so convenient in places like Cali and Texas when the power goes out.
I have an old 1993 W140 S class Mercedes coupe that I use for picking up and delivering pinball machines around the country for past 10 years. it has 3 memory buttons 1 - for driving, and a great long distance GT driving machine it is too. 2 - for loading a pinball machine, ( it even lowers lower and pulls in steering wheel and straightens the interior mirror ) 3 - adjusts everything to perfect sleeping in car position for those 2 or more day journeys the 6 litre engine retains enough heat to keep interior relatively warm all night in winter and the double glazing along with copious insulation ensures a nice quiet nights rest. and when I need to move 2 or 3 pinball machines, I can easily put my duvet on the roof and strap down the 2nd and 3rd machine through the pillarless doors and windows. and cover them with a tarp. there's many photos around on the internet. hard to find though, as social media posters don't know what the black and de-badged rare vehicle is.
I hope you can toggle OFF the “Open Tonneau Cover” in Tent Mode, what about when you want to sleep in the vehicle cab or bed without a tent and want to level but still need the Tonneau closed for security?
"It's a prototype so please excuse the scruffy edges" - Not at all like the actual production Cybertruck then... I wonder if there are any similar packages on the horizon for the Silverado RST EV - the one where the entire rear wall can fold down so if you have a camper on the back, the interior is open to it as well. Sounds like a much better alternative.
I don’t think Range is actually an issue for those two cars. Obviously, you have to charge frequently on long road trips. But then again, you are not going to off-road 200km before setting up the tent, are you?
Yeah but you might easily drive 100km on asphalt before hitting the mountain road, and no supercharger along the way. That would be very common in the western US, at least.

The banana test was obviously done into a spot where there's a plastic peace to decrease the sharpness of the hood and give more contact to make it bounce back harmlessly. If you're going to do it, don't do it as a PR stunt for Tesla, do it properly with the banana nearer to the hinge like the tests which showed the hood cutting up the carrots.
if the sensor is more sensitive it doesn't matter where on the hood you put the banana because people have the carrot at the top too when they did their tests and cut the carrots
@@cjspyker It matters because of the size of the lever impinging changes the force on the sensor, if it didn't it would be a trivial setting, yet Tesla is not the first to get it wrong. Do people want to climb up and down? Don't think I'd prefer it!
@@ub00b I was going to comment the same re $2,800. Rivian calls it a three person tent - they’re either very compact or very friendly three people - maybe both attributes together.
@@Abebe345 It's not that high, a three step latter for ease, then no problem. And you get away from critters/bugs and snakes, wet grass, and being raised up you get a lot better view of the area.
Actually, with the Rivian, I've would love to be able to raise the tent even higher when camping, and have it low for less wind resistance when driving.
@@ragnvaldj.kjelseth9482 I can see those advantages when camping, even larger critters. I've seen versions that sit at roof height. Not a bad solution and towing, stowing part of it.
You mentioned (then complained) about the price of the Cybertent, but zero mention of the price of the Yakima? Why the bias? Pretty sure that Yakima is also close to $3k...more?
Yep, $2800.
But, the Yakima also set up in like a minute. That's what you are actually paying for.
The cybertent is the worst of both worlds
@@roguedogx it's a lot bigger, and anyone who ever set up a tent knows it takes a lil time, but thats of no importance if you are out camping.
the rivian one is just a way to sleep, they serve different purposes, you can get a standard one for the ct if you really want.
tbh i rather sleep inside the ct with camp mode climate control, fresh air etc.
@@roguedogx This guy futzed around with the Cybertent in a way that nobody would, for TH-cam drama. RTFM and you'll have it up in about 10 mins or less. And talk about worst of all worlds, the Yakima sits there like a gigantic wart, draining range (bad aero) and blocking the full length of the truck bed. The Cybertent is designed to work perfectly with the Cybertruck, and it's very cleverly designed to stay out of the way as much as possible, and to have zero impact on aero and range.
I can't believe this is a product of the company that made the original TOP GEAR .
You wankers do realize that Top Gear has always also been a magazine and a serious review outlet alongside the Clarkson-helmed show, right? No? Well try to be better informed.
I forgot it was Top Gear.... I thought it was two normal guys who did a test...
Yep It's just a boring advertising programme.
@@milolouis You have a very dull mind don't you?

I love this advert for Cybertruck, courtsey of Top Gear. Gone are the days when the BBC refused to advertise - nowadays, the promise of goodies that will never see the actual light of day is enough to get the BBC on board on promoting a monster that will never be seen in the UK. Why am I paying my licence fee again?
they don't wanna get sued 😂 .. i miss clarkson
You should have tried it in a heavy rainstorm, to see what it's really capable of :)
CT really missed out on a key feature for camp mode. They should have the rear window go down so cabin heat or AC can reach inside the tent.
Wow. I've never spent over a $100,000 GRAND on a tent before! Way cool !
I've loved these videos - this is the new legacy of Top Gear!
3k for that mess. Not the mention no hvac pass though which is biggest no no
well people who buy $100k truck probably can afford that but no hvac to the tent is a bit silly
The Rivian tent is also $3k
The tent is not a "mess". The guy didn't read the manual or listen well to instructions. But he still got it set up.
And IMO it wouldn't be camping if it were just like sleeping at home. Be a little resilient.
Tesla haters have to find something bad to say about it I guess.
@@FLPhotoCatcher- it is a mess. Try Hilleberg tents. These are well constructed tents. These Heimplanet tent will not work under windy or rainy conditions.

How’s the battery life after a night of camping and road testing?
Should have some way to connect HVAC into the tent
Check out what Canpstream is doing. They have a product for other Teslas and Rivian today and will have one for the Cybertruck soon.
It does seem like it's going over the rear window. Is that no droppable?
Yea.. that would have been nice. But I do like the idea he had of bringing an electric blanket. That would be good enough and probably save a lot of power over running the AC.
That boggled me. What is even the point if you can't make use of the car's HVAC?
@@moragkerr9577 I mean, it is camping after all.
Is there possibility to use air-conditioning from camp mode or is it completely separated from cabin and AC?
It's not that complicated if you can screw in a lightbulb you can set that tent up. Come on guy..
I can never remember which way to turn the light bulb so I just shove it in.
WHo me MAGA? How'd ya know.
13:10 yes but this will be a non-issue in 3 years ish for newer cars
Should of had the steak for breakfast to end the joke 🤣
We're so happy with our Delica. Very off road capable, lots of range, and no need to mess around with a tent.
What is the cost of that Rivian Roof Tent?
1-2k depending on the brand. There are many clamshell models. I was cringing when he got in both times, because he didn't have the ladder locked so the open half of the clamshell was essentially being supported by the hinge and the fabric. Not good. Otherwise, great episode.
Someone said that tent was $2800
You guys are really smashing it with content recently - great to see you getting so much Tesla stuff!
2:30 you used the plastic part to make sure the banana dont hit the metal....
It's a shame that the Tent can't use the camp Mode climate...
Half of what gets said about the tent and the cybertruck seems to be apologies for all of the weirdness and ridiculous expense.
They don't mention that the Rivian tent is almost the same price.
@@ub00b they should also mention that neither tent is made by either company. They’re both outsourced.
do u fit bikes in back with this tent? looks theres not so much space
How does the roof tent affect the rivian's range?
It's not a huge amount if you mount it over the bed and face it the correct way. Maybe 1.8 mi/kwh vs 2.x?
Just wait till Whislindiesel gets his hands on one. That thing is going to be in pieces!

That's really cool! I'd love to see Tesla come up with a Sprinter van that can be converted into an RV (with a solar array on its roof)
Ah, Johnson Valley with a fully erect tent!😂
Neither tent is made by either vehicle company you don’t have to go with these particular tents
The CT tent is easier to setup. RTFM and use an electric inflator. This was staged.
Cybertruck has racks for sale if you want rooftop set up.
@@Abebe345 that's fine, but that doesn't address what you do with the Cybertent(?) when you sell the Tesla - not like it's going to fit anything else. Point being, standard RTTs can be moved to your next vehicle, the Tesla can't.
@@jaymelton2663 Point is the cybertruck tent stows in the bed under Tesla's working tonneau cover. Out of the elements and the air stream.
That last shot ...The cyber truck STILL looks like something I've never seen before 😂 so cool, so different so futuristic!!
Kudos for you. Been looking into why some prefer the norm and others the unusual.

06:11 "I don't read instructions ..." Fail. 🤦♀
Also, using a _manual_ pump with an electrical socket right there ... 🤷♀
But the tent can _clearly_ be improved; especially at $3k!
Rivian did such a great job with R1T, would love if they bring something similar to Europe ❤❤❤
CyberTruck tent is really nice designed and integrated. A pity he made it much more difficult to mount that really is.
$3K is a lot, but then many rooftop tents are around that ballpark. Hate the CT or not, the integration is pretty sleek and unique.
Should have used the built-in air compressor on the Rivian to inflate the Cybertruck tent.
Hand held is cheap, more powerful, and doesn't reduce your ability to move your car up and down. Rivian has to charge after couple uses up or down, isn't fast moving relatively, and using the compressor doesn't help. Trade offs.
Love, how they pull out in quietness.
I was hoping you guys would do a brokeback top gear and bunk together in one tent 😂
@@ragnvaldj.kjelseth9482 The good news is they properly unfolded the legs on the Cybertruck basecamp.

that I use for picking up and delivering pinball machines around the country for past 10 years.
it has 3 memory buttons
1 - for driving, and a great long distance GT driving machine it is too.
2 - for loading a pinball machine, ( it even lowers lower and pulls in steering wheel and straightens the interior mirror )
3 - adjusts everything to perfect sleeping in car position for those 2 or more day journeys
the 6 litre engine retains enough heat to keep interior relatively warm all night in winter
and the double glazing along with copious insulation ensures a nice quiet nights rest.

I can put my Model Y into park, climb in the back roll out my comfy mattress and sleep in 68° climate control in just a few minutes. I've done this for years, in a Honda Odyssey, a Prius V. I've done this in heat, and in freezing temperatures. I love sleeping outside in a tent or bivy, but my Model Y is just too easy and comfortable. The Cybertruck is great, as is the Rvian, but the set ups in this video just look like a lot of over priced bother.
