  • Believe it or not, some people don't like me as a critic--or a person, evidently. Here are some specially juicy bits of vitriol aimed at this channel that you can find in various internet chatrooms.

You're the only person who does classical music review on youtube at professional level. And there are very few people who would be able to do it, because almost nobody knows and remembers so many recordings. So please, keep on going, this channel is an extremely valuable resource.

I consider Dave more as a Classical CD Ambassador than as a music critic. For all his "assessments" he is mostly spot on, but sometimes I strongly disagree.

Very true. I've been listening to classical music since I was 10 years old, inspired by my grandparents player piano, which had mostly classical paper piano rolls. I also liked rock and popular music and that was what I talked to my peers about since anything classical they didn't have a clue about and really didn't want to hear anything about it either. So I just kind of privately enjoyed classical music to myself for most of my life. It just moves me in a way that other music doesn't; "fills that void". Growing up near NYC, we used to get WQXR and WNCN classical music stations; sadly long gone now. My mom used to also listen to muzak at home; uhh well......😒

      a) I applaud you HOTLY for being confident and thick-skinned enough to pass on to us some of these personalised, trollish rants and be able to laugh at them;
      b) Carry on blathering. It's the combination of blather, knowledge and critical expertise that delights.

I am 65 years old, love classical music and have read many critics. For me, in my humble opinion, you are a godsend, with whom I do not always agree, of course, but with whom I agree many times. I must thank you for my having listened to wonderful composers, compositions, interpreters and performances. I have nothing but words of gratitude for you. My only complaint is that you, my dear Dave, will ruin me even if it is a nice and happy way to ruin me.

Then, out of curiosity, I looked you up on TH-cam and here am I, totally addicted to your wonderful videos. English is not my mother tongue but even if it were, I'm sure I still wouldn't be able to find words worthy enough to thank you for the sheer amount of knowledge and entertainment you provided me.
I told a friend of mine about you; he's the smartest guy I know personally, a diplomat, a polyglot and an outstanding amateur musician (having played first violin in the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in a few occasions). He didn't know about you but now, like me, he's hooked.

The latecomers who know nothing of your background (or haven't read any of your excellent books) would do well to educate themselves in that regard. Agreement or disagreement with you is irrelevant. I enjoy your videos daily because they are entertaining, informative and share with viewers your love of classical music. Thanks for your efforts making them, for which most of us are appreciative.

I think your channel is a great thing. Sometimes I agree with you, sometimes I don’t, of course, but it is never anything but fascinating. The problem in the world of social media is that people become furious with anyone who doesn’t agree with them, rather than listening to someone else’s views and making a considered counter-argument in good faith.

As someone who wrote a great deal of criticism (music, film, literature, even some video games) in a past life and who was weird enough to grow up reading a lot (and being fascinated by) criticism--my earliest introduction was the snippet movie reviews in the back of our TV Guide--I've come to realize that the value of critics is in these qualities:
    1. They turn us on to things we didn't know existed, but end up being glad to have found thanks to the critic.
    2. They add to our knowledge of what's being criticized, either via contextual/historical information or in the form of insightful observation, turning us on to aspects we may have missed.
    3. They eloquently express a certain view point on what they're criticizing so that others, who are less eloquent, can say "yes, that's what I feel as well."
    4. They act as a guide through whatever medium is being criticized, so that people don't feel hopelessly lost exploring on their own.
    5. They act as a conduit for discussion about what is being criticized.
I think Dave embodies all of these qualities. Too many people think criticism begins and ends with opinionated assessment, followed by an "if I agree with the critic they're good, if I disagree with a critic they suck." Of course there's plenty of bad criticism out there, which usually consists of nothing but opinion vomiting, but it's pretty easy to distinguish the good from the bad if you know what you're looking for. Anyone thinking Dave is a bad critic immediately tells me they know nothing about the art (and yes, it's an art) of criticism.

Dave, your channel got me into Bruckner and Messiaen. It got me to appreciate how great Zubin Mehta, Ozawa, Jochum and the Czech Philharmonic are. It got me to a deeper appreciation of Debussy and Prokofiev. I’m a more critical listener because of your channel.
Every critic is listening for specific things and the best thing about your channel and surveys is that you’re able to put in easily digestible terms what makes recording x special/different/worth hearing.
My two complaints are that there still hasn’t been a repertoire video on Franz Schmidt Das Buch mit Sieben Siegeln or a review of the new Seattle Messiaen Des Canyons aux Étoiles….which I wouldn’t have listened to in the first place if it wasn’t for the “if I could only choose one piece by Messiaen” video.
Thanks for everything you do Dave!

Dave’s is my favorite TH-cam channel because it has significantly expanded my appreciation of Western Classical music. While I’ve been a Classical fan and CD collector for decades now, my interests had become too narrowly focused on late-Renaissance and Baroque music. Listening to Dave’s criticism and recommendations has opened up new worlds for me. Now it’s a delight to be able to find all sorts of used CD bargains of great performances of standard repertoire. Plus, I’m always in awe of the ex tempore style of these videos, presumably based on a “photographic” musical memory. Respect!

I found this channel about 2 weeks ago and it has reignited my love for collecting. I was very ill for some seven years and I found that going to a local half price books store and buying clearance CDs. I got a CD cleaner and hand organized a 2,000 Disc collection. But I had more or less stopped collecting. But thanks to your help, I am blessed to find that I did get many great discs and now I am back in the collecting game.
No matter what you do, if you do it well, you will get the nay-sayers and whiners.
I wish you the best, and thank you for your fun and good and insights!
And if people are crabby about the length of your videos, don’t they realize that they can just move the slider forward until you hold up the disc?
People…the best and worst thing about life.

Your channel is a treasure! I never buy any music recordings without checking your channel first! You have a way of describing music that I can easily understand and relate to. I make lists of your selections for reference. I am 79 years old. I have seen Rubinstein, Van Cliburn, Eugene Ormandy, and Rise Stevens in live performance in my youth thanks to the Community Concert Series (don't know if that still exists). To test your knowledge of violinists, I once lived in the home of Grisha Goluboff! I was so happy when I discovered your channel, my previous guide for buying music was the old Martin Bookspan Basic Repertoire, but it only included orchestral works. You cover all genres of classical music! Keep up the great work, love your knowledge and humor equally!!

I find your rambles always go through interesting landscapes and lead us back to the main viewpoint; in fact you do speak - extempore - in coherent paragraphs, in an entertaining way. It's just a matter of taste (some people absolutely can't bear reading Proust or Laurence Sterne or Herman Melville). The mystery is why people who 'despise' you spend so much of their time doing it. You've guided me, I think very congenially, to many recordings which I wouldn't otherwise have known, for which many thanks.

I really love your videos! It’s so refreshing learning and hearing about classical music in such lighthearted and candid way. I often find myself giggling at your comments, even if I don’t agree with every single opinion you put out there, it’s still very enjoyable to hear someone speak about classical music so freely and with such enthusiasm (it makes classical music so much more approachable ). Music is mostly subjective, not everybody likes the same thing as one does, but that’s what’s fun about commentary, you get to hear what others think and use it to solidify your own views. So keep up the good spirit!

Your site is incredibly useful. I often find new works that were totally unknown to me and this has refreshed my listening. I have a very tight budget and so it's great to listen to your top 10 or so choices on-line and then settle on one ... or two at a pinch. Formerly I would just rely on a big name conductor/ orchestra combination. Every purchase I make is now more informed and more likely to be taken off the shelf. I love that you are reviewing for enjoyable listening and not for historical interest. You have reinvigorated my enjoyment of classical music. Thanks Dave.

Dave, while I don't agree with absolutely everything you say on the channel, I find your taste, honesty, bracingly existential approach to music listening (which can be summed up as 'just find what you like in it,' and don't worry about any external standards of taste), and most of all, your encyclopedic knowledge of classical music and discography wedded to infectious enthusiasm, to be a wonderful resource. Keep on truckin'!!
BTW, over the past three years or so of following your channel, and before and during that time, the Classics Today site (to which I've been subscribed for some years), I've learned a hell of a lot about the music I love, and have discovered well over a couple hundred splendid recordings (and some "less-known" composers) I might not otherwise have found. Appreciated your honest self-appraisal with the 2nd comment (from Uruguay), and LOVED the insane, mad-scientist laugh after ..."here..where I can control the discourse!" I was reminded of a round-table discussion I once had with local conductors, where repertoire selection was discussed, and one of the guys said "I program what the audience wants to hear!" My response was something like: "with the vast amount of fabulous repertoire available, how can an audience really know what they want to hear?? The same 25 "top ten" works repeatedly? I'll "help" them to discover what they want to hear...(in other words, I'LL control the discourse/repertoire, and they'll end up liking it).
Thus, the orchestra became known as the place where you could discover delightful, unfamiliar gems....much like your own channel, where I've encountered many unfamiliar (to me), fascinating composers. LR

I don't agree all the time but to me you've validated so many of my favourite performers and performances and provided the impetus to purchase so many cds that will take me years (at my current rate) to encode. May this show run and run.

I watch videos on your channel because I respect your taste and agree with many of your opinions. There are some videos I watch over again because I plan to listen to all or almost all of the specific pieces by the specific conductors you mention in the videos. I like your sense of humor and wit. I look forward to your videos because, even though I know some things about classical music and have searched for things on my own both popular and obscure, there’s no way I can find out everything and there’s not enough time in each day to listen to all that I want to hear but I appreciate your talking about artists/conductors/works etc. because your comments quite often help me figure out if I want to invest a huge amount of time on an artist’s works or a small passing quick listen. 🙂👍

I don't value just what you say (which may or may not match my opinion of a piece, composer, conductor, orchestra or soloist), but how you say it. That is why one reads criticism rather than going to a lecture, for instance. We want the critic's verve, personality, humour, and even his unreasonableness to shine through. I can understand that a performer or conductor who has spent a long time learning their craft might have touchy feelings, not to mention CD producers and orchestras who are spending a lot of money in a niche enterprise. Still, we all know that criticism is just one man's educated opinion; and that the type of people who are interested in it are basically classical music lovers who love the genre. Forget the prats that make the pathetic personal remarks - you do the best you can, a LOT of people (including myself) enjoy your presentations very much. I certainly love classical music, but know so little about it that I really benefit from your mentions let alone likes/dislikes of any one composer/work in particular. This friendly channel has really helped by inspiring and yes 'accompanying' me as I am building-up my classical music collection, which is very small. Now I'm alone after losing my Wife I have turned towards classical-music more, and this channel and your friendly and cheerful manner are helping me enjoy my music now, with you and your channel as company along the way as it were. I never fail to be inspired to try a new (to me) piece of classical-music after watching one of your excellent videos. I can read dry facts, histories etc of Classical-Music from thousands of sources, but there are not thousand of sources (in this case video of course) that enthuse, cheer and encourage me as your obvious warmth, enthusiasm and ease of manner do. Obviously those comments that David read are unfair and ad hominem in the extreme. This channel is an incredible resource and a wealth of insight and information. I have learned a tremendous amount and have been entertained to the same degree. I do not pretend to appreciate every variance of performance that David does or even notice them much of the time. If David's attentiveness to every performance is a 10, I am at maybe a 4. I'm more influenced by the sound of the recording (dry with a lot of mids and highs versus round, bottom-heavy and lush registers more with my sense of a recording than perhaps the performance). I notice variances in tempo probably more than any other variable David tends to discuss. But I don't have strong opinions about what "works" and what "doesn't."
I'm amused sometimes by Dave's pet peeves when it comes to certain conductors he tends to love (Manfred Honneck, say, or Charles Mackerras) and those he tends not to love (Simon Rattle). I'm sure they are good opinions though in a blind listening I probably couldn't identify who is who.
Above all Dave listens intently to dozens of performances of a piece so I don't have to. Listening to a work three or four times (to get a good impression) of ten different performances of Mahler's Seventh (to pick one) would take like 40 hours of concentrated listening. And that's just one piece. Thank you Dave for all you do. Whether we agree with you or not.

OK, hands--who here is old enough to remember the heyday of the audiophile/music magazines like Stereo Review and High Fidelity? Back then, SR offered its classical reviewers the chance to vent a bit and name, in two successive issues, "Ten Composers I Love", followed by "Ten Composers I Hate". Naturally, it's the "I Hate" entries that I remember best. On Wagner: "I know he was a genius. I just hate that he happened to music." Or, on Bellini: "My idea of a LONG evening is spending it with the sighing partisans of "Norma". On Puccini: "When I hear Puccini, I get an almost olfactory sensation, as if I had just run over a skunk.". Well, I love Puccini, but I didn't feel the need to swear out a warrant for the critic's arrest. Hey: If you don't like what Dave does, why watch him? (By the way: that's my real name.)

Benjamin Britten was “sickened by the cheapness and emptiness of Puccini's music.” He said: “What makes Puccini a greater composer of operas than, in my humble opinion, a great composer, is that he knows how long it takes a person to cross the room.”
