- Ep. 125 MAKING A GORGEOUS GOLD MOSAIC MIRROR FRAME & the Smalti Mosaic Owl Gets Some Feathers!
Welcome to my studio!
I jump into piecing an easy mosaic mirror frame from an estate sale. Using E-6000 for beads and GE II Silicone adhesive for tiles and tempered glass, I work on the golden mosaic frame. The outside gets a row of round beads. Then I cut Illuminations tiles in half for the inside part of the frame. Next, I layer Morjo ™ 12mm IRIDESCENT Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile in faint-golden-yellow-irid from Mosaic Art Supply next to the beads. Using faceted gold beads, I weave them back and forth in a viney, organic way around the frame. Then inside each swoop formed from the vines, I lay in hand-cut irridized gold stained glass leaves, faceted gold flowers and gold mirrored tempered glass. The tempered glass must be added one piece at a time with tweezers. The movement and sparkle from this mosaic look so great!
3:43 I start on Mosaic Mirror #4, which will be done in grays! I start with tiny irridized 8mm tiles around the inside and that is as far as I manage this week.
5:27 Alrighty! I tackle the smalti owl! It's been a few weeks, but I'm excited to start on the head feathers, which are speckled in brown, black and cream. I'm excited to use a speckled Eco-Smalti made by Morassutti in Italy, and purchased from Smalti Emporium here in the U.S. It is manufactured using environmentally friendly methods, which is a plus! But the real draw for me is that it is PERFECT for the speckled feathers on my owl's head!
6:21 Using a bed of black tinted Laticrete 254 thinset, I tweeze in feathery bits of smalti. They begin with a diagonal slant up the head, and then transition to a vertical lay. Some of the pieces are actually laid horizontally because of the patterning on them. The top of the head has less brown and more black and white only. Since I have a bit of time and extra thinset, I am able to piece in the ear tuft on one side! I think the progress is fantastic and it's getting exciting!!!

All of the frames are gorgeous but the gold one is my absolute favorite. It's truly stunning. I can see myself making one (maybe a little tiny one). The owl is amazing too. Thank you again for sharing.

The mirror frames are beautiful but like you I too like the golden one more and once again you have chosen the perfect song for it !!! Owls are called Ullu in Hindi, an Indian language (in fact the National language). So I'm already in love with Mr. Ullu - you are such a good artist that you don't miss the slightest detail. Can't wait for Mr. Ullu to be finished - looks so realistic might fly off into the night !!!!

I'd like to ask you about your camera/phone holder. It seems very firm yet flexible.
I film my work frequently and I'm tired of looking for a good holder. I've changed several and no one was good enough. It seems like phone is too heavy for them so they bend down and don't hold any position but just few.
Could you share your holder brand or show it in one of the next videos?
The brand is TRYONE and I bought it on Amazon. It sometimes sags down if I have it extended too far. In fact, it was doing that a bit when I worked on the mirror and I had to scrap footage of my table.

What color grout did you use on the gold mirror? It really is Spectacular! U r such an inspiration! Ive watched all of your videos several times. I. I'm in the process of making my daughter a mosaic table with stained glass and broken plates. It is a vase of flowers. Ive already made my other daughter one. How do I send u a picture of them?

Smalti is a type of glass, typically thicker and hand-cut.
Hello Julie! Here from Portugal my great thanks for the learning I get with your videos. I have been getting material from big stores and particurlaly from Italy but what is the name of the grout you use to glue the pieces in the case of the owl?
The owl is not grouted. I am using Laticrete 254 Platinum thinset that I have tinted black with powdered colorant.
