I suffer from moderate food aversion, I don't really like eating different textures and flavors in one dish so I never finish my meal. I have tried various medicines to increase appetite and stuff but that only gave me ton of side-effects. I started watching your videos 2-3 months back while eating my food and somehow I am able to finish my meal whenever I watch these videos of yours appreciating new dishes and celebrating food in general. I have also gained 3 kgs in last 2 months. It has proven to be the best therapy for me. Thank you Beryl.

Everything I've cooked in this unit has come out great th-cam.com/users/postUgkxD4Qeo-HRLxMfom_PDinM_SBfes00qJsB ! Everything tastes so good. Some of the recipes I've changed a little to improve the taste. For instance, for french fries which call for no oil, I spray them with olive oil and season them with salt and pepper. They come out great! It makes the best toast I have ever eaten. The recipe I use calls for lightly buttering both sides of the bread. It calls for cooking at 400 degrees for 5 minutes on one side and then 2 minutes on the other side. This time has a lot to do with the kind of bread you are using...so keep an eye on it. Also, the fans in this Ninja are a lot stronger than other air fryers. So lay a metal spoon or something on the bread to keep it from flying around. It's a little extra work to use your Ninja as a toaster but it is worth it!

It's not TMI, Beryl. A lot of people have really toxic relationships with food, thanks to media and social pressures. I think it's great to hear from people who have been in that negative place and got past it to something more positive. You're a great example, and your channel shows people the good things that food can do for us.

I will admit, I have kinda abandoned breakfast traditions almost entirely. In my head, any food can be eaten at any time, if you are willing to cook them. Porridge for dinner? Yep! Microwave lasagne in the morning? Easy meal! Also when one has a chaotic sleep pattern like I do, one breaks their fast at any time of day.

I like to have dishes seperated into different times of days, but what I eat has little to do with what would be traditional for my country.
Soups, nargesi (eggs poched in greens with citrus juice), more traditional porridge or scramped eggs, cantonese ginger fried rice, milk rice, congee, green smoothies, rice with barberries. Millet barberry omelette, a not very sweet cake...
From the outside there is literaly no isdication whatever I consider something a breakfast food or not 😅
And then there are chicken wings that are my no matter what time dish....

Growing up in the 1980’s and being left alone during the summer while my parents were at work, Frozen Chicken Patties, Frozen Hashbrown Patties, and bottled Sweet and Sour Sauce was my go to breakfast. 😂

One of my favourite breakfasts I call a Hot Mess Skillet. Saute all the veggies you like that are often found in omelets and use some canned chickepeas as the protein (maybe 1/3 of a can). It's really delicious, cheap and keeps me full for hours. You can spice up the chickpeas to match the veggies you are using or just use salt & pepper and it's really good.

The great thing with Birchermuesli is that you can make a bowl of it and it sits in the fridge waiting for you to be hungry; breakfast yes, snack why not? dinner, occasionally, after fitness refuel, definitely. It is seasonal, very healthy, economical and delicious. I love birchermuesli. The grated apples are a must have and if you’ve made it too thick you can add some more fruit, or yogurt or milk or even a splash of fruit juice to thin it out a little.

I have grown up as a Swiss/ Australian and my family has made Birchermusli my whole life. I have always thought (apart from oats and yogurt) it needs nuts, grated apple, lemon rind and beaten cream to be a real Birchermusli. As an adult I omit the cream, add fruit I have on hand and I also grate in a carrot. I know carrot sounds weird but it gives it another texture (and yes I'm mother that likes to hide veggies in food). My 3 year old can not yet say Bircher so it will now and for ever be called 'Busli musli' in our house.

"Pap" in South Africa basically refers to porridge of some sort (usually maize meal based) and if I'm not mistaken, that's pretty much the case elsewhere on Africa too. The texture can vary a lot depending on your ratio of maize meal to water, and it's often eaten with some kind of cultured/fermented milk or buttermilk.

    • @marykedewitt1362
      @marykedewitt1362 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeay I was checking if someone is going to comment. Yes pap can be runny or stiff or crumbs, and its not using fermented flour, just plain maize meal, and you can eat it with tomato and onion relish (with your braai meat) or we as kids loved it with butter, sugar and milk…delicious!! So interesting how the dishes differ between countries! Again Beryl enables us to learn from each other ❤
Edit: oh my dad loves it with maas, the fermented milk almost like buttermilk.

It's the Dutch word for porridge. I'm quite amazed it's gotten so far around. South Africa used to be a Dutch colony before the English took it over and still has a large population decended from it. Other African countries and the Caribean must have gotten it because of the slave trade. Germany is a neighbouring country with a lot of similarities, especially along the border regions.

Hi Beryl, I love your content so much-you’ve become one of my favorites here on TH-cam! ❤ And such a coincidence that I watched this video today, as I’m currently living in Oaxaca City, Mexico & just this morning saw Huevos Divorciados on the menu when I was out to breakfast; never heard of it or seen it on a menu here before & thought, “Divorced eggs? Am I understanding that right & why would it be called such a thing?” Thanks for answering that question for me! 😆 Not only am I going back to the restaurant to try it, I’m also gonna make it at home (plus the Irish, Egyptian & Swiss recipes)! Hugs from Oaxaca, Mexico ((❤))

Beryl, don't be afraid of fat in dairy! People with higher fatty-acid levels associated with a higher consumption of whole-fat dairy products had a lower risk of death from all causes, as well as a lower risk of heart disease! Plus, the fat in the meal slows the spike in blood sugar that occurs after we eat a meal, thereby staving off diabetes. Not to mention, fat tastes good, so there's that, too! 🙂
I just love watching the evolution of your cooking and your attitude toward cooking. It's just so cool to see the delight on your face after taking the first bite of a dish, and hearing you say, "I made this!" Things like homemade salsa or homemade fritters make such a difference in the pleasure of a meal, and I'm thrilled, as I said, to see the evolution of your cooking and your attitude toward preparing new foods yourself.
Loved this video and loved that you mentioned the TH-cam channel Middle Eats, another fave channel of mine. :-) Can't wait for your next upload, Beryl!

Can you talk about this a little more? We grew up with 1% milk. Several years ago Due to skin issues (eczema) I thought maybe it would help me if I drank whole milk. I felt like I gained a bunch a weight but not 100% sure if it was due to the milk or just life (I was in college). Over the past few years I buy either 1% or 2%. But I have lost significant weight over the last year and have reintroduced whole milk again over the last month in an effort again to co trilby eczema. Any benefits of whole milk for skin health. I know essential fatty acids are huge for skin so maybe I’m making the right decision? I also usually eat full fat plain yougurt or sour cream at least once every 2 week’s if not more often

That was very entertaining. The look on your face after tasting the Cameroonian one was priceless! I did once eat something so hot it made my ears burn! It was on a visit to Delhi and my uncle had taken me to the main railway station to put his car on the train to Bangalore. We had Idli and a very hot sambal and it was explosive! That was 50 years ago. I still like spicy food, but my digestion is not up to it anymore. However you did remind me that I hadn't had anything from Maggi for a long time. I found that one of my local supermarket's (I live in SW London) stocked various items. I now have Maggi Instant Nooddles in various flavours, Maggi Seasoning both Original and Hot, and Maggi Masala Chilli Sauce which is HOT!
I have only been to Ireland once, to Dublin to operate the instant replays for a boxing match. I stayed overnight and had pretty much the same breakfast you had. And in the '80s as a freelance editor I did several jobs in Switzerland and had different versions of the Birchermüesli for breakfast.
My current go to breakfast is a version of Birchermüesli using Oatibix, either banana, red berries or raisins, low-fat Greek style yoghurt, and semi-skimmed milk. Oatibix is flakes like Special K, but made from wholegrain oats. It's from the same people who make Wheetabix. Diabetes 2 and hypertension mean I need to be careful of my diet, but I still try to eat interesting meals.
Keep up the good work, and Happy New Year.

The Cameroonian dish is so interesting! Here in Panama, where we have a strong influence from various different African (as well as Caribbean) cultures, we use Scotch bonnet peppers a lot (in fact, I always say that is one of the flavors that I most associate with Panama, the other being culantro). And we call them "ají chombo" (chombo is a sort of an affectionate---but can be controversial, too, depending on the tone and context, of course---way to refer to Black people; I know, it's a touchy subject and I apologize in advance :( it's just the name of the chili pepper). So when Akom said that the dish is also known as "achombo," my ears perked up! As an etymology nerd, I now have to look it up. I'll keep you posted :) 🌶🌶

The Cameroonian dish is pretty similar to another Nigerian dish. The puff puff is replaced with akara which is a savory fried bean ball. Eaten together with pap. I always add lots of milk and sugar to my pap because I don't like the sour taste 😅😅

Beryl you amaze me! I see you sourcing obscure ingredients and cooking and enjoying all these amazing dishes each week! But then you surprise me because you have never made fried rice or intimidated by salsa...I barely cook but when I do friend rice is my go-to (and I’m thinking isn’t the salsa just blended pico de Gallo?!). I’d love to see your beginners cooking guide! See you next week!
Also a request of your fitness journey too! I follow you on fb and was amazed at your figure (I hope that’s not too creepy). I just recently lost 20-25 pounds over the last year and want to keep it off but also eat well :)

Beryl, when you drop the puff batter by hand, you did it upside down, they do it from the thumb side, you did it from the pinky side.
You'll have more control doing it from the thumb side.
We in Asia do similar method when making meatball..
