At age 69 I spent the night in Batad. I even walked to the waterfalls, which is quite treacherous. Three months later I found out that I had cancer that had metastasized to both lungs, I’m doing ok right now and would like to do it again at age 72.
Enjoy every breath, keep fighting by doing what you think best for you. I'm bless I don't have problem but life is no guarantee. I might go before you. Good luck bud, extend your life a bit more.
Great video Jason! Love the work you are putting into your channel! I am currently travelling INDIA 🇮🇳 with the hopes of becoming a travel vlogger just like you! Thanks for the inspiration 😊👌
Lovely video, Jason! It looks a blissful place. It's been 25 years since I last visited the Philippines. I'd like to return within the next 2 years and will definitely visit this part of the country. Stay safe.
Did it feel like you travelled 2000 years back in time as you meandered through the narrow paths and the small villages? I can just imagine each of those volcanic rocks used for the retaining walls being carried by the ancient Ifugaos that carved the sides of those mountains to turns them into the magnificent terraces.
Philippines beautiful magical country. And it's not only beaches to see there, there are different kinds of landscape and biggest treasure - people! Happy to live here.
Thank you Jason for this lovely video of Batad. Your video brings back memories of my trip to Batad/Ifugao about 30 years ago. Starting from Batad I made a 3-day trek with a local school teacher. We slept in local peoples houses which gave me an insight into the lives of the local people. They all were very friendly. I remember, we brought salt, tobacco and biscuits as presents for the people. Unforgettable memories.
Thanks for the memories of this incredible one day hike to the falls and back. I did this precisely ten years ago in 2010 when I was 58 years old with a a small group of travellers younger than myself. I must admit that I challenged myself to beat those younger people back up that steep hillside to the top which I did. However in the jeepney on that extremely bumpy drive back to Banaue I started suffering such horrendous pain in my lower back that I had to get out and lay on the road awhile. I ended up in the Banaue hospital overnight. Heat exhaustion may have been the cause or perhaps dehydration from the intense sweating of the hike. Forever etched in my memory bank as one of the great hikes along with the hike up to Machu Picchu etc
You should have rested for some minutes and not trekked it nonstop. Even us who live there have to admit that we can never beat those long, narrow winding paths. BTW, i had never visited that place but we have a similar rice terrace and mountain view in my parents hometown.
Your videos are incredible. I was born in the Philippines and migrated to the US when I was only 13. Thanks for letting me see a Philippines unknown to me. Incredible photography!
There was a scene on the movie avengers: infinity war where Thanus sat down and lived where he was killed by avengers, it was taken at the viewpoint of the banaue rice terraces. Amazing u been there, wish i have that strong leg
Goosebumps! Wow, I'm not really sure if where is Batad as i always go to Banaue and Sagada, too jealous to have not been in this heavenly place, If you can't visit Batanes, this is surely an option or better! Thanks man, i'm proud to be Filipino❤️🇵🇭
Batad is ideal for adventurous Traveller..so you better prepare walking and hiking..the area is quite dangerous coz of the narrow roads but its a worth journey seeing the view of rice terraces..one of the wonders of the world!! Good job Jayson..keep safe always! Enjoy staying in the Philippines
At 17:10/18:23, you said, "It's been one of the hardest days of walking I ever had." Hmm! Have you hiked into the Grand Canyon as I did twice in my lifetime? 4.5 hours to get down to the River from South Rim, a 9-hour slog back up the next day, after spending the night looking up at the FANTASTIC display of stars making up the Milky Way directly overhead. Or, in the UK, attempt the Swanage to Lulworth Cove of the West Coast Path? I guess I can only look back at nearly 70 years of age with nostalgia. Another excellent video and I admire how you can keep your balance on that narrow ledge overlooking that sheer drop. Well done, and keep up the good work.
You came here at the right time. May-june is the best time to visit batad because its all green. But everyone is required to get a guide, its better to be safe and its one way of helping the community.
I was there in the late 90s and huts had traditional roof thatching and blended with the environment. The huts built since use corrugated metal which makes it an eyesore in the middle of this pristine place.
Yeah as much as i'd like to preserve the native houses built out of dried grasses, i'm not in the position to change the minds of our politicians. Money is more important and well, it's the houseowners' right to modernize their thatched roofs and wooden walls.. But if i were to maintain the beauty and the genuine beauty of Banaue, i would choose to preserve ancient native houses as they were built before by my ancestors. I love to cherish memories that would bring me inspiration and a sense of connectedness to antics used by my ancient forefathers.
Hmmm... It's a source of personal conflict for me how one who lives with all the convenience of modern age, technology and science, can judge indigenous communities for wanting to enjoy a few of these benefits for themselves... It's great that preservation of culture is advocated, but in this case, maybe let the indigenous communities decide what they want themselves
What I meant was that using corrugated metal means it's a step back because it makes it look like "informal settler" because it rusts and bends. If you use thatched roof then it's more traditional keeping it more in line with the indigenous culture. It's aesthetic blends better with the environment.
@@MrNaysh There are reasons why they chose corrugated sheets for roofing material. Less labor intensive, less costly, easier to place... which are all valid reasons. Yes, we people from the mountains, love tradition, but we are not averse to using modern conveniences, especially if practical. And yes, aesthetics suffer, but try explaining that to people who can only spare enough for GI sheets.
Thanks for this video, don't know jow did it while trekking to the narrow edges...but really a breath taking view when you love nature.Be safe and God bless you Jason!
It's making me feel woozy just watching how narrow and steep your hike path looks. Wow, I'd be a bit nervous doing that hike. :) However, it it amazingly beautiful!
wow, you are very brave walking down in hot sunny and very hard to do with that dangerous ways but I'm' sure breathtaking feelings those stunning place.
this is in my top 5 videos of all time, among all travel channels.. its a cross between a trip vlog & professional documentary like that of Lonely Planet or Discovery, but still very relatable.. I like the journey and feel of adventure.. both enjoyable and informative to watch.
There are some historians contending the well-known theory that the terraces were constructed 2000 years ago. They argue that they are the result of a more recent phenomenon than previously thought. Such phenomenon is the pressure by the Spanish government to assimilate and live on flat lands. Hence, those who did not like the idea decided to settle in the mountains. They also stated that it is quite insulting for the people who built the terraces to assume that they built such 2000 years ago because if so, then they should have developed other technologies (e.g. wheel, plow, etc) within such long span of centuries. Btw awesome video!
Thank you for visiting Batad. I'm from here and I grew up here before I moved to the city of Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines which is over a hundred kms away from Banaue. My mother's souvenir shop along the road to the jeepney station is the first stop when you're from the village. You probably seen her. When I was a kid, I always go with my mother every weekend to sell souvenirs to the tourists. A thing I always miss childhood memory.
Great views I always wait for your videos, I like the way you show and describe about each place. Please continue to do it sir! Like your videos from Cambodia

I am a Filipino. From what I see in your video is breathtaking but i can't believe too it is also a populated area. I thought its a rural area but it just like a urbanized place. Sorry for bad english grammar.
You did really go the length of exploring Batad by walking through those narrow pathways and getting the vantage points from the highest point down to the ground, something other tourists wouldn't care to do. You really soak up the atmosphere and the whole environment in earnest and with educated commentary. More power to you!
At age 69 I spent the night in Batad. I even walked to the waterfalls, which is quite treacherous. Three months later I found out that I had cancer that had metastasized to both lungs, I’m doing ok right now and would like to do it again at age 72.
