Tailoring material properties by adjusting specific process parameters is becoming more and more the subject of investigation in research of additive manufacturing of metals. By using the innovative beam shaping AFX laser from nLIGHT not only microstructural features and the mechanical properties of the nickel-based superalloy IN718 can be tailored, but also production time and costs can be reduced significantly while maintaining part quality. Special attention is given to the use case of a turbine blade, for which we demonstrate three-dimensional, high-resolution visualization of in-situ process data.
