  • What comes to mind when you hear the name Jaguar? The roar of the engine? Their racing pedigree? British luxury, perhaps? Well, the car you once thought to be beyond your reach just became more attainable. This is the new entry-level model; the XE.

    I own this car and it is a blast to drive! I've hit 49 miles per gallon. The climate controlled engine start through the phone app is so great in cold weather. Plus it does turn heads. I live in an area where there are more Mercedes cars than most and I just stand out in a jag. The interior is classic and I will admit that I jazzed it up as there are lots of after market brushed aluminum pieces to match the interior. I have owned a bunch of cars and this one is a keeper.

    Test drove a pre-owned 17' last night. With respect to the diesel, I came away with it having the same or equal diesel sounds as my previous Jetta wagon TDI (2012). Personally, I don't mind the extra rattle that comes from the oil burning engine. I was not a fan of the abruptness of the auto start feature when the brake pedal was depressed though. 43 mpg is a big draw for me as I have a 70 mile round trip commute. And I would think Jaguar service would be a little more pleasant than the local VW dealer. Not a stand out, but i applaud any manufacturer who is willing to put diesel in their powertrain lineup. If you want real quiet, Buick does a great job at that.

    I love Jags and I always have, but I don't understand what they are doing with their interiors (except for the F-Type and XJ) they just don't feel as special as Jaguars specifically should feel. I'm sorry but the new XE, XF, and F-Pace are really good cars, but I just don't think the interior materials quite measure up to what I think a Jag should be. I really hope they fix the interiors with mid cycle refreshes.

    I believe Jaguar was the last manufacturer to discontinue diesels for passenger cars entirely in the US, only doing so around 2019-2020. For comparison BMW I believe last model year for diesels was 2018.

      I love my car too!!! Im a lady in my 30s in this 2017 Firenze red car, I purchased it brand new and yes it turns heads and all men I come in contact with have no idea what this car is, I love it when I pull up to a gas station and they question me twice thinking it’s a regular gas car, I say nope it’s diesel and they are shocked! I don’t find it noisy at all, nice little sports car with great speed, haven’t had many problems with it, but would definitely get a tire warranty for anyone thinking of purchasing

    I gotta tell you I think you suffer from the typical American mentality of “we don’t like diesels” which has robbed us of some very economical cars. I own the same car as a base model and in the r type. You are absolutely wrong about the chatter, you can’t hear it with the bonnet closed and the interior is very quiet. I drove it cross country at around 60-65mph without a/c and was able to get 55mpg. The brakes and handling are excellent because of the light weight. Again, you are so wrong about the sound!!

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoy yours. BTW, they were so unrefined that Jag killed all of their diesels here. So I can’t be the only one.

    I really like my 2017 Jaguar XE R-Sport however, the InControl Touch Pro system is very erratic and often plagued with computer hardware and software problems. The base model is far superior and has fewer issues.

      Yes, plenty of XE models on the roads here in Northern Ireland. I test drove both petrol and diesel models and was disappointed. Both had more cabin noise emanating from the engine than my Hyundai IX35 (Tucson)! As you said, not quite good enough to be a Jaguar. :-)

    This is just a shame. As VW TDI owners, we really wanted to love this car. Just didn't get why it had to be so cramped, (relatively) low-rent and "unspecial" inside. Too bad.

      I guess you guys across the pond get screwed over again. Maybe some power reduction due to emissions. In the UK the 160 bhp model is tested at 132 mph but 0-60 is slower at 8.4 sec. The only Jag that has 121 mph top speed is the entry F Pace.

  • @Tully3674
    @Tully3674 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Jag should fire the marketing firm that said there's a demand for a diesel. I give it 2 years before the diesel option is dropped.

    • @MrCarGuy
      @MrCarGuy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tully3674 There is plenty of demand for its home market and in the EU. I'm sure it's reasonable to sell it to diesel people in the US and it's large enough to justify homologation.

    Couldn't agree with you more about the diesel option. So mind boggling how European car journalists think sport luxury + diesels go together time and time again? and even more unfortunate so many people in Europe spend so much on cars like this to save a few pennies at the pumps. It's a fast looking car in fancy dress essentially - Depressing. It is sad that in Europe the government sway consumers decisions with strict tax brackets for cars with engines above 100bhp. I'm British but so glad I'm in a country I can freely drive what I like without the government punishing me. Great review Steve

      You guys just don’t get it, a diesel gets phenomenal fuel mileage compared to its gasoline counterpart if you know how to drive it. If you want to do a burnout every time the light turns green or blow someone’s doors off when you pass them, then, no, you don’t want a fricking diesel, but not everyone is like that. I enjoy getting 50mpg on the highway and I don’t care if it’s not of the same interior quality as a Bentley…it’s just a car!!! Besides, I’ve got my 2006 Ford GT if I want to show off.
