Only true at the level of game output on console in 2001 (not much later, though). The PS1 and PS2 are not even close. However, PS1 and PS2 games were very similar in 2001. There were a few major differences, though. For example, PS2 loaded much faster than PS1 in general. PS2 also had far better save mechanics and far larger storage. But, if we just judge the graphics, the PS2 was far beyond PS1 in 2001. Not endlessly better, but still far beyond it. You have to go to about 2006 to see the true power of the PS2, as you start to get down-ports from Xbox 360 and PS3. The entire game dev landscape had improved, along with controls and games in general. The ones that were capable of going to PS2 without real issues showed just how great the PS2 was over the PS1 and 1990s' consoles. On the other hand, PC and PS2 were very different in about 2002. But, it depends on what you care about most and judge as 'large jumps', and how the average player feels these differences. 2004-2006 was a major turning point in gaming and game dev and more, on PC, Xbox 360, DS, PSP, Wii, and PS3. So much of what we saw here was impossible back in 2001 or so. The largest jump in general was clearly the PS1 between 1994 and 2001. It went from a mostly 2D, small-world, non-analogue stick machine to a fully 3D, fairly large-world, dual stick machine with decent controls and inputs, and far better design overall with very good save mechanics. The most remarkable 6-year period in history. Actual 3D itself was invented around 1993-1996, also, both on PC and console. We also got the really advanced arcade games starting in 1994. We got MMORPGs and related with RuneScape in 2001, and a few others before that. The true first- and third-person shooter genres were also invented around this time, as it required 3D. This is the first time we see a major jump in resolution/pixel count. And, it's maybe the greatest period for IP growth, and was the period of some of the best game mechanics and series of all time (mostly from Japan and America and the UK under Rare, Rockstar, Nintendo, Sony, Naughty Dog, Xbox, Valve, and a few others). (A few other genres were invented at this time, too, among other things, such as the analogue stick.)
0:12 one of the most "magic" elements for me as a kid, was just how COMPLETELY DIFFERENT the PS2 console hardware looked, compared to the PS1..... it was night and day difference, it just looked so advanced and "next gen"....with that DVD disk tray and purple discs and the big fan on the back, even the PC style PSU on/off switch at the back.... I will never get that feeling again about any piece of gaming hardware lol.

I don't know if we had the same PS2 launch, but the PS2 launch games weren't exactly great. Besides Tekken Tag Tournament, TimeSplitters and SSX...the games sucked ass on PS2. Not until a few months into 2001 when the good/great games started rolling in.

I still can't believe it had been 20 years since the ps2 released and it's about to be 3 generations this fall. I feel old for someone who is about 26 this year. The ps1: Tekken 1, Soul Blade, & Ridge Racer is all I needed, but when it came to the n64 my first ever gaming experience: Super Mario 64, Star Fox, Smash Bros, Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong, and GoldenEye 64 was the true definition of golden age games.

I remember watching this same video at Gamestop when I'd come in and make payments on my launch day PS2. This is a nice throwback to a simpler, more innocent time when hype had it's full effect on me and micro transactions weren't a thing.
Then along came Naughty Dog with Jak & Daxter: no loading screens, seamless transition, interwoven world(s), music and soundtrack changed according to the situation you were in, crisp and clean graphics... Throw in Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X, Need for Speed, Shadow of the Colossus, Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits To my 'ol PS2: I love ya, buddy. Thank you for our good times together
It's fascinating looking back at these. The PS2 games really progressed from this announcement to when the PS3 was released. It does put things into perspective though. Compared to the Dreamcast, only Gran Turismo seems to be a major improvement. Not a dig on the PS2 but it makes me wonder how much more could the Dreamcast have been pushed when compared to the PS2?

I don't know if we had the same PS2 launch, but the PS2 launch games weren't exactly great. Besides Tekken Tag Tournament, TimeSplitters and SSX...the games sucked ass on PS2. Not until a few months into 2001 when the good/great games started rolling in.
Yeah fantavision whooooo! The PS2 launch lineup is universally regarded as one of the worst of all time. It was ass!
my first PS2 game I played was the bouncer , I was amazed how truly amazing graphics at that time . awww what a memories
Woah, the graphics for this new console are insane! I can't wait for this to come out!
😂😂😂
I remember when my my mum bought this PS2 for my dad's birthday. I don't know how i remember it, in 2000 i was just 3 years old( how nostalgic
1:02 TEKKEN.....Tekken was literally *born* on PlayStation hardware.....Tekken is *life.*
@Felipe M. Mhm....
Tekken for arcade: Am I joke to you!?!?
@@chowmein0941 Well, at least the arcade board for 1994's Tekken used PlayStation hardware: *Namco System 11.* So, technically, Tekken was born on PlayStation hardware.
@@tmcttf8087 I see.
Did it use CD's inside of the arcade system, or was it just a board?
@@chowmein0941 Considering it was an arcade system....perhaps just the board?
What's the name of the game 3:17?
That's the power of PlayStation 2
Who is here because of the PS5 reveal? Lol
yee
Hortinus haha! I figured! To be fair same here haha!
Meeeeeeeeee
yup
Yep bro because I hear that the ps5 will play PS4 games
I still can't believe it had been 20 years since the ps2 released and it's about to be 3 generations this fall. I feel old for someone who is about 26 this year. But my most memorable and I considered the golden age of gaming generation is the ps1 & n64 eras.
Dear God, this video was from a PS underground demo disc, my childhood
I've never been so hyped for a new games machine than I was for PlayStation 2!
All the things we take for granted in gaming today was the things they never imagined that they would ever see on screen 20 years ago.
PS2 presentation reveal will be always favourite, they way girls walk up with heart and love to the ps2 🔥😍🔥
What a great machine. Back in the day when you waited late at night in line to get your console
Greg galanos. " the fact that you can render toy story" yeah i bet that was taken out of context lol. He should have said pre render for cutscenes
Man Ninja Gaiden originally coming to the ps2 instead of xbox seems so wild to me.
The upcoming new Ninja Gaiden for PS2...WHEEEEZE
First it was announced for Dreamcast if I recall it right, then PS2, then Xbox - Itagaki simply wanted the most powerful system he could get at the time. And as much as I appreciate working around hardware limits, it was the better for the game, all team ninja games looked stunning on the og Xbox. Doesn't mean PS2 didn't have good lookers, especially considering the hardware - the lush density of the jungle in MGS3 Subsistence comes to mind or Gran Tourismo 4...
@@Ashitaka0815 man we still got a bunch of hack and slashes way more than Xbox actually we got way of the samurai 1 and 2, shinobi wich is basically ninja gaiden for ps2 by sega it’s a reebot, god of war 1 and 2, devil may cry trilogy, onimusha 1,2,3 and 4, shadow of Rome, genji dawn of the samurai, bujingai, samurai western, blood will tell and more also beat em ups like god hand, urban riegn and yakuza 1 and 2 but Xbox got otogi 1 and 2 and ninja gaiden and some more
@@armorwolf7934 All the games you quoted were amazing on ps2, but NG was so ahead of its time man
Tomonobu Itagaki with short hair and no sunglasses is recognizable.
There's something about the ps2 that so appealing to me. Maybe its because I like its simplicity and I daresay futuristic? Well when it was in its prime anyway.
It's not someone in real life its the PS 2 rendering pixels! Thanks for that otherwise I could hardly tell the difference...lol
I remember watching this same video at Gamestop when I'd come in and make payments on my launch day PS2.
This is a nice throwback to a simpler, more innocent time when hype had it's full effect on me and micro transactions weren't a thing.
Ps1 to Ps2 jump was revolutionary but now Ps4 to Ps5 jump seems very minimal compared to previous gen.
hdd to nvme ssd isn't minimal
I was so amazed when i first saw the opening movie of Tekken Tag Tournament. Still remember that moment.
Omg, I totally forgot about The Bouncer! I loved that game!
Too bad it was missing the destructible environments that the video showed off. Still a decent fighting game though.
The Bouncer and Dark Cloud ended up being completely different the time they launched. Wow.
Then along came Naughty Dog with Jak & Daxter: no loading screens, seamless transition, interwoven world(s), music and soundtrack changed according to the situation you were in, crisp and clean graphics...
Throw in Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X, Need for Speed, Shadow of the Colossus, Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits
To my 'ol PS2: I love ya, buddy. Thank you for our good times together
I remember seeing Tekken Tag Tournament videos for the first time and was blown away.
1:23 omg the beta version of Dark Cloud
I am just going to imagine this is the PS5 reveal.
Games on ps2 were not as realistic or boundary-breaking as today’s games . But they were just charming and different. Every game felt complete and done by heart.
You couldn't be more wrong , 6th and 5th gen games were THE most groundbreaking of any era ,
there was no greater generational leaps , and It's not nearly as exciting today there's nothing mind blowing or revolutionary anymore merely minor detail Improvements and larger size worlds.
@@fawkkyutuu8851 mate, that’s why I said PS2 games were not necessarily groundbreaking.
@@platinoirit was a huge graphical leap. What’s your definition of groundbreaking? lol
PS2 was such a leap ahead of PSX. Some games actually hold up fairly decently today to be honest. The objects look so much smoother than PSX.
Those were the days. I still have my old phat ps2 somewhere in my attic. I need to blow the dust off and play it again.
I hope that PS5 reveal will have the same sensation and bring my child soul 💖
I guess we'll have the same console as before, with the same games, the same controller, but now with Ray Tracing and worse game launches, just like Anthem, RD2D, warcraft 3 reforged, the division 2 and the list goes on...
I rememrber playing Gta 3 on ps2 for the first time on both at my friend's house in 2001. It was mind blowing. Then he put in silent hill 2 i was awed. Went home told my mom we need a ps2. We got one a year later.
The PS2 has coming up to life.
To była super konsola psx2👍 moje najlepsze czasy 🤗.
1:54 is that a 16:9 CRT?
3:37 Yeah... So how's that new next generation Road Rash game coming along EA?
I am very hyped for this to come out.
Same, can't wait to try it out
good old times. The screenshot with the ball-room.
At 2:35 the in-game music reminds me of the main theme from "Us", that Jordan Peele horror movie. Does anybody else hear it?!
"The cloth moves subtly" - Narrator while cloth is erratic as fuck.
God bless the PS2! I love that 90s techno music!
I have PS2 Satin Silver in 2006 after than from 2009 i was a PC Gamer till now..... Golden times PS2
It plays DVDs?
What is the crazy acid jam playing at the beginning of the video?
▪️
That song is called sk8r boi by Avril Lavigne.

@@2NDFLB-CLERKThanks
This makes PS2 sound advance even now. A separate blade of glass moves on its own.
I played Tekken Tag Turnament HD a few days ago and i saw this demo with Jim Kazama and this remember me PlayStation 2
Does anyone know the name of the music heard at the beginning (or throughout the video rather)? Was it custom to the reveal or is it from somewhere else other than the reveal? I find it sounding hilarious.
Never knew Ninja Gaiden was gonna come out for ps2 I guess Microsoft deal made it a Xbox exclusive.
God I miss those 2000s
Me too if i was i live since 19 in 2000.
I remember saving up all my birthday money to buy one i was 12 at the time wow where does the time go
You get 300$ combined gift money? I got pencil boxs, pens
Thanks for share this video
After all these years, I still have my PS2 system and I refuse to give or sell the thing cuz that thing is a cherished memory for me.
Still can't find what game is in 1:52?
to put it simply, the greatest console ever made
I'm crying!
Loved the pressure sensitive Ninja Gaiden. Best ps2 game eva!
2:39 " we use what we call Asian technology "
Wasn't technically wrong xD
Happy the the next gen consoles will be the biggest leap since the jump from PS1 to PS2.
