Hey Ron, it's Mark here. So, you are about to find out, I specialize in brass train repairs. I have at least 60 of those. Brass can be troublesome at times. When you can sometime check your gear lash, sounds tite. Gear boxes and the gear tower, and check the lash in the gear box and the tower, while those 2 screws are tightened down, you may need to install a couple thousandth shim between the tower and the truck gear box, to provide some back lash, if needed. I love Linda Carter, oh my.

Yes sir, what I was thinkn too. A little like a diff in a rear axle . There HAS to be a certain amount of play between the gears. That loco shouldnt be that noisey. I am sure it would start off better, too.

I agree. I have 3Tenshodo GP9's with the same drive. None of them sound like yours. Definitely shim the drive tower as Mark Irwin suggests, and check the alignment between upper and lower gears. I like Linda Carter too.🙂

Another great job Ron (your patience is remarkable!)!
Please, let me ask you a huge favor: try to change - and film - the magnets on the Tenshodo motor, showing us the electric measures (thanks, by the way: I really appreciated it!) before and after the change. I suspect her performance is gonna improve, but I’d like to confirm it.
Worst case scenario (my suspicion is not confirmed) you’re gonna have another video to show us your great work!
    Take care my friend!

I wanted one of those when they came out. But my allowance was 10 cents a week at the time, so I settled for a Hustler. Later in college I got into N and Nn3, and am still happily in them, despite the early Bachmann engines that came with smoke units. You turned them on, they smoked, caught fire, and melted. Persistence and longevity pay off eventually. W Alsdorf 😊

Quite the growler! Going to name that one "Grumpy". Got my 1st Tenshodos during Covid. F7A and B so no shorting concerns, but a broken weld. I will most likely replace the motors with cans to drop current pull. Fickle but sweet units. Tenshodo may have been Caddy's back in the day when compared to many other options for the time. Still good runners and haulers. And now I can say, I have brass engines! lol. Have a crack at some ALCO brass one of these days. Good prices at shows but re-motoring will be needed as the old box frame motor looks like it could drive a tank! That or put a fusion core in there! As usual, great vid. You always give me a laugh as I have usually been there and gone through the same process. Most often like : yes, yes, YES!, NO! NO! NO! A love hate thing going on. Thank you Bud!

Let me start by saying I'm sorry about the loss of Ewhgy, (don't know if that is spelled correctly). I do wish dogs had a life as long as ours. As for brass locomotives, I have fixed many and always find electrical issues, not drive problems. You found both! I'll bet that had a spring coupler from the motor to the drive tower but still ran like crap. I would take the worm gears out of the one truck and see how it runs but sometimes you do everything right and end up with a hot mess. Great video blemishes and all, Jersey Bill

I have just recently started buying brass locos. So far I have 2: one is a Fairbanks-Morse H12-44 & the other is a Baldwin VO-1000 both in the Central of Georgia livery. They're both made by Hallmark and use can motors. If I had an open frame one like this one, I'd be changing those magnets to neodymium (rare earth) ones. To keep the side rail screws from backing out, put a little dab of super glue next to the screw head and mounting surface or use some blue locktite. None of my engines growl like that, but then, I only use code 100 track. Cheers from eastern TN

It's a nice video on this repair. As far as the quality of the Tenshodo, they were considered the low end of the brass models due the detail of their pieces. The only thing that puzzles me is that Tenshodo picked the PRR paint for this model. This model would match up with a Southern Pacific or Santa Fe model more than the PRR. My only guess for the paint job was to sell more locomotives. I would like to note that the competitor of the PRR (NYC) had these locomotives like this model without dynamic brakes. Some of these locomotives made through the Penn Central all the way up to Conrail. So, Tenshodo could have painted this in NYC and just ignored the Dynamic Brakes issue as a close enough model for those who were willing to look past this detail.

I have a few Olympic Express brass F-7 powered chassis that ae essentially a Globe drive clone. The only way to get these to run well is to replace the motor with a precision NWSL or A-line motor with flywheel using silicone sealant. One drive shaft has to be cut and lengthened with brass tubing and super glue. I then attach Miniatronics 2 pin connectors with the matching ends run through the FF-7 porthole windows in the rear so that both are electrically connected. I now have power pickup spread over an A-B set which does not stall on frogs or crossings. You might try this with a pair of Tenshodo diesels.

Hi Ron. I particularly don't like brass machines and every time I've done maintenance on brass machines, I've had several problems with short circuits, including during the installation of a sound, light and motion decoder that burned down because of this and I had a big loss financial. If you allow me an opinion, instead of the flexible tube from the motor to the gear box in your GP20, I would adapt an Athearn or Atlas cardan, which I think would reduce the noise and vibrations. Congratulations, great video.

I inherited a couple of brass locomotives. The only thing they have going for them is the detail. Alot more attention to detail on the locomotives and as you said they sell some locomotives the plastic companies won't make. The cons are the motors are always junk. I have one that never ran when it was new. The other one I had to take into a repair shop and get it running again. The other con is all that money never buys DCC they are DC only. Which is where the senior citizens you mentioned come in, because they want to run DC only which boring.

I so, so don't understand you HO guys??? But great show as usual Ron, though I don't understand why such large handed individuals always pick the smallest items to work on? Yeah I understand that you can basically have 4-5X the collection and or layout sizes due to the smaller scale and less $ usually...... but Damn, if you need to use a microscope and tweezers to do a simple repair or installation on these tiny things.......? And these are giant compared to N or Z scales! IDK Ron? But you have G size digits OO O or even 027....but you always fall back into them tiny HO's with their extremely difficult and strange drive designs that are usually equipped with plastic pieces or gears..... After all your hard work during the surgeries you perform on these strange locomotives, knowing you saw plastic gears inside most all these trains...... How does on sleep at night at all? Knowing that you have plastic parts driving your engines? LMAO! Otherwise I'm just busting some HO balls here lol. Love your videos Ron and I can overlook the fact that you love HO, and use your information towards my own gauge scale, which if it's not obvious? 0, 00 or 027 the older the better, so postwar and backwards. We'll see ya next time Sir and stay cool out there my man, along with a Happy 4th of July to you all as well in TH-cam land.
