      🤔🤔 I REALLY DONT UNDERSTAND WHY TOM ALTER would get mad at a VERY NATURAL question. Yes, it could be annoying for him to answer the same question but it is COMPLETELY NORMAL to ask this question because he does NOT look Indian AT ALL. even in films his hindi accent was not normal and his name is not very Indian. SO WHAT IF PPL ASK HIM THIS ? HOW COME he COMPLETELY looks Caucasian?? Instead of clarifying the confusion he is making it further mysterious! That was a very CHILDISH, IMMATURE and IRRESPONSIBLE, HOSTILE behavior by Tom. 😑

    • @MohammedHussain-lb6nw
      @MohammedHussain-lb6nw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@euphoria156 no not really...his abrupt response is totally understandable...as he is probably frustrated with this particular constant repeated asked question...by asking him this question and in this question...one is questioning his loyalty for the country his patriotism for India...so of course he is bound to be offended and I'm sure that you would have too...he speaks a lot better Hindi than most of them nowadays who only speak English in India...so it is commendable to him.

      @shree711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's not a stupid question and I can explain why. It seems disrespectful and Tom Alter is probably tired of hearing it but there is some sense to the question.

    • @user-xw9nv9iv1p
      @user-xw9nv9iv1p 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@shree711 what's sense? Just because of his appearance? He was born here, in India..So he speaks clear Hindi, and he was also teaching in some school..Rather it's shameful that many southern states hate Hindi, can't speak properly...Can't understand why people judge others just by their appearance. I don't belong to south, but Im born with dark complexion and curly hair, so people keep on tagging me as Mallu or Telugu..I just get irritated with the same reparative question

    • @shree711
      @shree711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@user-xw9nv9iv1p Let me answer your point bit by bit.
      1. I can understand why Mr. Alter is annoyed when people ask his question but behind the question is not malice but actually curiosity for the real story.
      2. Being born somewhere has nothing to do with being able to speak a language. The vast majority of western expatriates born in Hong Kong cannot speak conversational Cantonese. There are loads of Parsis who grew up in Mumbai who speak Hindi terribly, cannot speak Marathi almost at all and are losing grip on their ability to speak Gujarati in favour of English. There are other children especially in the posh schools of South Mumbai whose parents hardly speak to them in Hindi and so they don't really end up speaking it well.
      3. If you're giving the example of Mr. Alter, you also need to remember that his brother and his sister as well as his cousin Stephen were all born and brought up in India but none of them can speak Hindi.
      4. His parents obviously didn't speak it otherwise if you look at my 3rd point, his siblings would have learned it too. So since his parents didn't speak it, it's natural to ask how he learned it because he grew up in Landour which was a white neighbourhood and went to English schools.
      5. The debate over South Indians speaking the language is a completely separate debate so let's not mix these two things up.
      It's very clear that Mr. Alter wished to stay in India, become Indian and take a very keen interest in learning the language, which is commendable. But this question is only trying to understand the story behind his language ability due to the reasons I have mentioned above.

    • @user-xw9nv9iv1p
      @user-xw9nv9iv1p 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@shree711 not at all. It's not curiosity but something like teasing or mocking, but when he spoke fluent Hindi, people became quiet..As I have mentioned, he was born in North India and was a teacher, so it's obvious that he will focus on developing his skill through which he can communicate with the public.. Afterwards, he joined Bollywood, where it's highly reqd, though he was always shown up as foreigner..Learning language and achieving fluency isn't a big deal..In corporates also, employees are getting paid more than their colleagues, in the same process, when they have additional foreign language expertise.. but mocking up someone has become a habit or a TRP gainer for many media employees.

    • @shree711
      @shree711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@user-xw9nv9iv1p Did you read what I wrote fully? I explain why it's not a stupid question to ask. And I know the answers to some of the questions because I know Tom Alter's story but some points I mentioned earlier still remain unanswered and now we will never know because he is gone.
      Anyway, it may be the feeling you got that it was teasing. I didn't get that feeling. I got the feeling that it was genuine curiosity because he does not know Mr. Alter's story well. That's why I gave the explanation above that just being born and living in India alone doesn't mean anything about whether you will speak a particular language well or not.
      Zoya Akhtar is the daughter of Javed Akhtar and yet somehow Zoya Akhtar is very uncomfortable speaking Hindi/Urdu despite having a father like him, living in India her whole life and working in Bollywood on Hindi films.
      It is commendable that Mr. Alter loved India, came back from his studies in America and wanted to be fully Indian.
      No one would mock Tom Alter because everyone appreciates the amazing work that he has done.

    I know there are some people like me, just wanting to know how a white man with a european name speaks hindi just like a regular Indian. Okay for you guys here's his family origin...
    Mr Tom Walter was Born in Mussoorie in present-day Uttarakhand. Alter was the son of American Presbyterian missionaries of English, Scottish and Swiss German ancestry and lived for years in Mumbai and the Himalayan hill station of Landour. His grandparents migrated to Madras, India from Ohio, U.S., in November 1916. From there, they moved to and settled in Lahore, in present-day Pakistan. His father was born in Sialkot. After the Partition of India, Alter's family too split into two; his grandparents chose to stay in Pakistan while his parents moved to India. After living in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Jabalpur and Saharanpur, in 1954 they finally settled in Rajpur, Uttarakhand, then a small town located between Dehradun and Mussoorie; Rajpur is now considered a suburb of Dehradun. Alter's siblings are older sister Martha Chen, who teaches at Harvard University and brother John, a poet. Author Stephen Alter is a first cousin.
    As a child, Alter studied Hindi among other subjects in Mussoorie. Consequently, he came to be occasionally referred to as the "Blue-eyed saheb with impeccable Hindi." He was educated in Mussoorie's Woodstock School. At 18, Alter left for the U.S. for higher education and studied at Yale University for a year before returning to India upon losing interest in studies. The following year, he obtained work as a teacher at St. Thomas School, Jagadhri, in Haryana. He worked there for six months, simultaneously coaching his students in cricket. Over the next two and a half years, Alter worked several jobs, teaching for a while at Woodstock School, Mussoorie, and working at a hospital in the U.S., and returning to India before continuing to work at Jagadhri. At Jagadhri, he began to watch Hindi films. It was during this time that he saw the Hindi film Aradhana, which proved to be a turning point in his career and drifted towards a career in acting, inspired by the lead actor Rajesh Khanna. He headed to Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he studied acting from 1972 to 1974 under Roshan Taneja. In a 2017 interview, he recalled, "I came to Mumbai to become Rajesh Khanna; didn't come to act on stage."

    This was the depth is Tom Alter sahab had, many of his contemporaries and most of today's actors lack it. Many people have habit to judge others on the basis of their skin tone, religion or origin. But a person belongs either to the land he is born on, or the land he embraces as his home by respecting & assimilating in the culture of that land. Tom Alter was a born Indian, a 3rd generation Indian and a great actor. Same goes for Kadar Khan, he was born in Afghanistan, an enthic Pashtun who moved to India with his parents when he was a child, but he was as Indian as rest of us. And if we look at life of both actors, career and depth in the roles they performed, we can see they were more rooted to India's soil than many other Indians.
