Why does it make sense to upgrade to the best interface out there?

- I have been working with UA plugins for 20 years now and I would never want to use anything else... it only made sense to upgrade my table top interface to more inputs and higher end converters!
Thanks UA

This video sealed the deal and just ordered one of these a couple days ago. Should be here tomorrow and can't wait to give it a go!
I bought the x4 last year and still having used it
Your office is insane!
No need to apologise, this is something you're extremely passionate about which is a good thing.
ARTHROPODS AT THE END!!
I Love the X4, I personally have one and I love it.
I also have been using UAD since the UAD 1. I currently have an Apollo Duo interface, 2 OCTO satellites and 2 QUAD satellites which gives me 24 DSP processors in total. I own 90% of their plugins and yes this was a large investment I made over the last 15 years but I agree with Henning that between the quality of their plugins and the UNISON technology its a hard system to beat.
do you record with unison preamp? do you think unison replaces alot of the hardware counter parts?
Yes... I have hardware, but I really only use the Unison stuff now... it's absolutely good enough to record an album!
@@EytschPi42 ok thank you so much
I’ve watched this 2 times now just cause…. I’m a fangirl for UAD completely full blown UAD junkie and I’ve got no excuse but your setup is excellent man the parallel soundcard that you have is my island dream. Damn you man lol love your channel
Thank you so much Sandra!
Can you explain a little bit how you have all your heads wired. I'm looking to create a set up like that with the shelves. Thx
TB3 cables are different than usb-c. usb-c is technically just the connector but a usb 3.1 cable has less bandwidth and can be active or passive, TB3 is active and is a lot quicker, has daisy chaining capabilities and can function as a USB port as a fallback. I believe USB4 will be quite close to TB3 though, whenever that comes out
Nammthrax and Crabs! - Cool opening tune... Very nice kit! Cheers.
I bought one of these and tried to return it a couple days later, maybe I will keep it now. I just didn’t realize what I was getting into until I had bought it and thought I would probably never need that many inputs.
Dude your video looks fantastic. I don't know what you're doing but I want it.
What I don't understand is, what are you using the 4-710D preamp for?
Aren't the Apollo units supposed to be the all-in-one preamp solution, including preamp?
Great video, very likeable and informative!
The reason why i have an extra monitor controller (drawmer mc2.1) is because i want the DA of my interface to have the full bit depth when converting. if i lower the volume on the interface itself i lower the bitdepth it converts with. Just a thought!
when u add a octo to a twin were u given the same plugins or do they let u pick different from what you own alredy
the same ones
I'm trying to choose between the X4 and Audient id44 is there a big enough difference..? Or even SSL SiX
I've got the audient i44 already and I'm here looking to buy this X4!
same question, onboard ‘plugins make the difference? or using just the cracked desktop versions are fine?
@@theriffdjenerator2213 Thanks for the reply dude, did you get an X4 in the end?? I havent upgraded yet
I have an 8P, an 8 duo and a twin duo. What’s nice is the 8P has enough inputs and power to handle any tracking even with say an SSL on every channel and the others handle the mix dsp requirements with plenty of room to spare. I can track with up to 14 pres but at that point I would have to bounce down or shut off some plugins on the mix I’m sure.
I came close to getting one, but I don't like the idea of spending a fortune on their plugins and if i choose to go else where, i can't use them since their plugins are locked to their hardware. Right?
right.... but with a twin or x4, you just take the hardware
Man you have a ton of gear!!!! Good stuff!
Will it work with a MacBook Pro 2011?
You should update your macbook pro first therefore you have new endless opportunities.. even buy a used 2016 or something. It's all in your favor
Before buying uad x4 by the MacBook Pro m1 if u can
looks like the one to get. Have you tried the Apogee Symphony Desktop. If so what do you think between the two?
I own an Apollo Twin X and use 15 - 18 plugins. I think the x4 would have been a better choice. 4 unison pre-amps is better than 2, 2 headphone outs is ideal, I need the 3 outputs for multiple speakers, and it has full ADAT, instead of just ADAT in. These seem like small things, but the x4 is the best and everything I need.
Almost 2000 USD and No MIDI in Or OUT for a synth?
Can I run 4 Speakers on the X4?
yes you could, as long as you can assign that in your DAW and pick which ones you want in there. (Cubase can do that)
If you want your UA interfaces to sound even better, then have it modified by Black Lion Audio and they’ll sound amazing (way better than the stock sound)
I got the Apollo twin duo
Which plugins would I need for EQ
For my podcast
Like the best proper EQ does the Apollo twin duo come with the plugins I would need already?
I can't keep up with the new models, but so far haven't felt crimped. I have the 8 quad and the Twin quad, so eight processors, plenty for me. More than I need in truth. Also haven't felt the need for T-bolt 3. 2 is fine so far. The Ox is tempting though.
Question: is it possible to combine an apollo twin and apollo x4 to have 6 real time preamp mic inputs for recording? My friend has a twin and I am contemplating an apollo x4 and this question is on my mind...
no, sadly you can’t cascade a twin and an X4… you can add an X4 to the rack units though… that works
@@EytschPi42 Thank you for the quick response. I dig your work the Fryette stuff (totally need to check out his new Pitbull UL whenever he issues out the new version rumored this year) and the Thermae review have been quite helpful...Totally dig the PS2...time based fx after the preamp nd power amp are killer in the fx loop
are there any available cab sims plugins for this audio card? i would like to hook my amp to the interface and use cab sim in real time
nope
Well there are sort of. On all the Brainworx developed amps you can bypass the preamp and use only the power amp and speaker section. Not a dedicated cab sim, and quite expensive if you need a lot of variety. But it works!
Also, I love running different amps into the Fender Tweed set on the cleanest setting, and then Ocean Way Studio after that.
@@henrikpetersson3463 i love Ocean!!!
Thanks for your previous response. Another question: I previously used the Yamaha MR816x which had 8 inputs. The Apollo X4 only has 2 monitor ins. I have two synth keyboards (Triton Studio and a Korg arranger keyboard). Can I plug the keyboards in and still have four speakers or should I purchase the UAD Apollo X6? Thanks in advance. 👊😎
The Keyboards go into the INPUTS, that has nothing to do with the speaker outputs.
The X4 has 4 inputs, so you could hook up all of your keyboard in stereo, but then you have to unplug them if you want to record vocals or something else. I recommend a small mixer in front of the X4 to sum the keyboards together.
@@EytschPi42 Thank you again for your speedy response. Unfortunately, I can’t use my MR816 because Steinberg/Yamaha doesn’t support the interface. Well, I guess the other work around would be to purchase the Apollo X6; which will cost me an additional $500 dollars. A good mixer no doubt would cost me the same. Guru, what do you think?
yes, the X6 has 6 line inputs and will work for you, if you don't mind spending the extra money.
@@EytschPi42 I have six of the fourteen Guitar Center (Return/exchange to store days left). Last question my friend, beside the additional inputs on the Apollo X6; is there a big change internally between the X4 and X6?
Would be great if these included SPIDIF
Oh, I remember your fancy UAD-Cards. Never made the connection that those were the same guys that made the OX 🤯😁
wow, you so dumb!
I think “NAMM-thrax” just became entered into the urban dictionary.
I’m about to pull the trigger and buy the Apollo interface
But the issue and reason I’m asking
Is in order for my PC to accept thunderbolt I’m going to need to upgrade the motherboard
I just want to know if I should pull the trigger on the twin duo (USB) for Windows
Or get the Apollo twin x ( thunderbolt)
(Because there both the same price point )
N wait till I can upgrade my PC
I wish to know if the upgrade is worth the time I’d be waiting
Since I’ve heard the converters are better and pre amps are better
I’ve also heard low end is more controlled
But I’m going around asking
Just get the usb version
Very good
Little mistake there, 0:30 shuld be I'm sorry I'm still waay weird because I'm Henning
can you show us how to use the interface please ...I have a Apollo 2 X and after bringing it home only to find out I needed a thunderbolt 3 cord to plug it into my Mac Pro ,I still am trying to download the free plugins that come with it ...also can't wait for the luna program to be released !
the plugins install with the driver and console... you just register and then you can use them!
@@EytschPi42 I have the console no problem but not the plugins it said to uninstall and what not I left it for another day to tackle ...I had to go to 4 different stores just to find a thunderbolt patch cord ..thanks for your reply I'm sure I will figure it out .
Nammthrax new album spreading the GAS comes free with your entry of the event center.
H: Hi, Was that a brain fart at 5:15 ? Apollo Twin having 4 processors ? ( or is it really a twin set of duo core chips ?) cheers (EDIT: Ah sorry I see there's confusingly a quad core twin !) Woah... 500 quid extra for the quad over the duo ?! That's disgusting, those SHARC chips cost around 40 quid each when bought singularly)
Dude I'm still using an Emu 1616m. I've got my eye on the X4 mainly because I want something that's going be a major upgrade from the Emu and I know the engineers that made it moved to UAD, but even to this day the Emu is still great bit of kit. The only thing is the price range, it's expensive. Have you ever used an Emu, besides the plugins can you give me a comparison?
How do you compare the 4-710d preamps vs unison plugins? I’m on the fence now whether to invest in Apollo x4 or the twin finity 4-710d. It’s a lot of cash so I want to make the right investment. I already have an Apollo twin.
I don‘t really have the ears for this stuff... BUT, if you already have a Twin, then the 4.710d might make sense... just connect them with lightpipe and expand the Twin this way! Most of the time I use the Unison preamps now... sounds great to me.
@@EytschPi42 alright your answer is quite clear... i have a behringer ADA8200 which does the job. But I want to upgrade my preamps as I'm running a small home studio, however i only can afford one piece of gear. I know well the unison preamps, they are stellars. What I will do is to upgrade to an apollo x4 and sell my Twin Mk1, i think i won't spend money on the 4-710d.
Okok. Serious question, why should I replace my Steinberg Ur44 with this? Where are the benefits in a situation where I record my band in our shitty rehearsal room? I really want to know.
if you record your band in a shitty room, there are very likely no benefits... the preamps are killer and the built in plugins are the best there are, but obviously you have to consider the whole chain and that means mics, cables etc.
Recording a band with 4 inputs is also not really going to happen...
For a production though... this is killer... high end preamps.... unison technology which gives you almost no latency on the most amazing replications of classic preamps... if you overdub at home... record guitar, bass, vocals... that is where you will find a big difference!
Uad is way too overpriced. Thank god for plugin alliance. And the preamps in the Apollo arent "that" great.
The preamps in my vrs-8 are higher specced 😉
Um, I use UA hardware and software as well and love the stuff but only one single UAD desktop interface (arrow, apollo twin, quad) can be used on a system. You can't cascade your old Apollo Twin with your new Quad. I guess you've figured this out by now. 😀
i did
Wow I’m impressed. Gonna be mine
Twin x quad or X4?
Depends what you're using for
People are afraid to do a comparison esteem this, the Symphony Desktop and the Volt. The only thing they say is, the more expensive ones are in a different class. But no one proves it.
i tried 3 different thunderbolt 3 cables with the Arrow ranging from $24-34...including an Apple cable. None worked with my Macbook pro. Lots of back and forth with UA and they couldn't get the device to work. I happen to pick a $3 USB-C cable (blackweb brand) on clearance at Walmart to charge my phone. On a lark i plugged it into the Arrow and it worked. WTF? This isn't supposed to be the case. I went back and bought 3 more...
weird!
The UA Apollo X4 is NOT in the bedroom producer´s pricerange,...it is easy to get nerdy about UA when the wallet is big,..but it is not for everyone,... ;) For shure UA makes awesome products
Who says it isn't? I think that there are quite a lot of them that can afford it. Surely not everyone though.
Not sure you can run 2 desktop units in the same system. Maybe that's something they recently added but it hasn't been possible for a long time.
Yep, from their website -
A maximum of one UA desktop audio interface (Arrow, Apollo Twin, Apollo Twin MkII, Apollo Twin X, Apollo x4) can be connected to single computer. If two desktop units are connected at once, only one will be recognized.
@@careynordstrand1805 They can be if you happen to have the two TB ports running on the same lane, which a few of the older ones does. But they don't support it officially.
Antelope Zen Tour?!
No thanks!
@@henrikpetersson3463 Why though?
@@robertmachtmusik Antelope has a terrible track record when it comes to product support. They keep pushing out new products instead of taking care of peoples issues with the older ones.
It's not a company I would feel confident in making business with.
@@henrikpetersson3463 Interesting. I own the Zen Tour and never had any problems so I can't comment on that.
Having my homemade tagessuppe while watching this :-)
Now show us how to use the dam thing LOL ❤
I would take your old one since I lost my studio in a flood. Would be very much appreciated !!😁😁
@eytschpi42 Henning please do a follow up video with more details of your different processing chains and your recommended plugins.
I will provide food (pizza and foam kisses) and drinks ( coffee, beer) in return 😺
UAD needs to support PC users.. they lack this support..
Sweet gear ... But with me just dicking around on a guitar I can't justify spending that kind of money on an interface, or any other gear for that matter ;). My trusty Behringer HD is more in line of the price compared to the quality of my playing
Why James McAvoy from split is making this review?? 🤣🤣
Dibbs on the old one :)
Why are you using an audio interface? I heard, that using digital mixers are better, because they have no latencies at all.
You can't record audio without an interface. You may be confused...
@@xlcoldj th-cam.com/video/Yd_jIDUpAiM/w-d-xo.html
@@youtubevideos415 Thanks for the link. I've watched the video. If you're offering some kind of recording service it would make sense to also have a "digital mixer" like the one he is showing.
As far as latency goes, the UAD will give you around 1ms latency with effects inserted and the "Unison" preamp feature. There are none of the problems that he mentioned with the firewire and USB interfaces.
The external mixer can "outperform" the DAW because it can only do a few basic things; however, I don't buy the "too much time to set up a new project" argument made in the video. Under almost all cirucumstances I've found it better to keep the entire recording and mixing workflow inside the DAW. I like for all of my settings to be recalled "at once" instead of in-combination.
How many inputs do you need? Are you operating a studio or recording your own stuff?
@@xlcoldj Not any experience at all. Just asking questions :-)
The Apollo has a digital mixer as well. Just not physical faders and knobs for it (unless you go the console 1 route).
Nothing that does digital processing will have zero latency by the way.
❤️
great
Fanboy-addict? The first step in dealing with the addiction is admitting it. Then you can either try to overcome it, or wallow in it!
I am currently shopping for a new audio interface, as my current one is still on firewire, and I'll upgrade my system soon and won't be able to use it for too much longer. It'll have to be thunderbolt 3 moving forward.
"Unfortunately" I have some external sound modules and samplers (5 in total) that i want permanently connected, so this UA definitely has not enough inputs (and i don't want to go the external mixer route again). Also the x8 wouldn't fit, and given it's just a hobby for me i don't want to spend 3K+ on an interface.
Considering your input needs, i believe your only option is to go for a rack mount I/O. The UA Apollo x8 is a little steep in price, but there`re other great options, like the Presonus Quantum 26x32 or the new Quantum 2626 which`s thunderbolt3. I use the former and it`s a pretty sweet unit.
@@johnv1684 thanks I will look into those.. rack-mount is not a problem, as currently i'm using a Focusrite Saffire pro 40 and Octopre (for additional inputs) and those are 19" units as well.
If the apollo x16 and the x4 linked together wouldn't be over 5k at Thomann that would be a perfect combo, but for pure home-use that price can't really be justified (while in a professional environment where it can be written off the taxes, i'm sure it'd be worth it).
edit: unfortunately also not enough IO, unless it can be somehow chained with another unit.. the 4848 might be interesting if they update it with TB3 though
I personally am not sure the D/A conversion stands up against the new RME ADI FSR units but I think RME is better. Also I couldn’t stand how cheap the knob feels on those units. And I already have a nice mic pre which I normally use one instrument at a time through. Not to mention the plugins should be able to work without the DSP. Come on UA
Sorry, but wth is an OXBOX?
this guy is funny as hell lol

I really wish UA would switch to USB C. It is the only reason i am not buying these.
