    No better way to break in a KLR than a 100 mile ride in the cold!! Hope you are loving your bike.

    I just bought a 2014.5 KLR with 21,000km. Unfortunately it now has to sit in the shed until the snow goes away in the spring, but I got a great deal and I'm looking forward to hitting the roads/trails next year.

    I picked up a load of paper in Keyser, WV. Nice KLR riding area. I ride a KLR and the only colour available was red. I hated it and then it grew on me so much that I love it now. You will LOVE your KLR650

    Welcome to the clan.
    I love the yellow color.
    Mine is a green ‘08.
    You will enjoy adding accessories as you go.
    Wonder what they will replace the KLR with?
    As you probably heard, ‘18 is the last year.
    I put a lowering shock link on mine, a Corbin seat, heated grips, a lower dash kit, led dash lite bulbs, the Tusk hard Panniers.
    It’s a blast to ride and has a cult following.
    Ask anyone who had one, they wish they had kept it.
    Enjoy! My friend

    A little late to the party but how has your KLR held up so far and what kind of mileage have you managed to put on it. In 2020 I have noticed a few 2018 models for sale at the local dealer in central Canada. They look like a very durable bike with analog gauges and minimal electronics to give you trouble.

    • @BOC_Adventures

      Hi Mack man thanks for watching. So far I have just under 5000 miles on her. Wish it were more. They are super durable and they have their quirks but overall just a super fun bike to own.

    I went from a red 08 KLR650 to an 08 DL650 to a camo KLR650. I dropped the first KLR 3X in the first two weeks. I thought I was buying a new 22 RE Himilayan, but I rode out the 18 KLR. Its the only time I've repeated a bike.
    The bike had 3402 miles, 18mo left on extended warranty, $3000 of upgrade parts on the bike, all original parts saved, and maintenance journal. At 5'8" and 59yo I decided to do the too big pig again. And I am loving it!

    I have the 2013 yellow and black KLR. 7600 miles and the only problem I've had so far was the gas cap lock failed within a few months. Dealer fixed that for free. One thing about KLR's, if you cruise the highway above 70-75 for extended stretches you might notice some oil usage due to oil blow by at the piston rings! It's not a huge problem really, maybe a few ounces between oil changes!

    • @BOC_Adventures
      @BOC_Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried to find a yellow 2013 and could not locate one anywhere. I have heard the same thing on the oil but havent had her on any long range highway trips just yet. Thanks for checking out the video usamchinist! Much appreciated.

    For cold weather riding, they should make special riding gear that takes heat from the engine and circulates it thru the jacket. Then it wouldn't matter so much if it is close to freezing temps outside when you ride.

      My bother on a Moto Guzzi 850T3 and friend on a Kawasaki 500 H1 rode from Florida to Colorado. I remember him saying something about sleeping under an overpass under the bike with his arms around the engine to keep warm and periodocally starting the bike. Youth.

    Welcome to the KLR family. My 2012 KLR had 31k miles on it when I sold it and it still ran great. I'll be getting either a 2018 or 2019 KLR soon. You just can't beat the KLR's reliability. I flogged mine like I flogged my motocross bike and it took anything I threw at it. If you have the skill a KLR will handle any trail you have the balls to point the front wheel at too. Great choice and may your mighty steed serve you well!

    • @Eldofarmboy
      @Eldofarmboy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's heavy but it'll do anything you ask it to. It didn't take long for me to learn how to hoon it in the dirt (your experience may vary. I have 7 years of motocross and enduro under my belt). I raced mine in a local hare scramble and placed 4th but I was super exhausted by the end. I strongly recimmend a full Vance & Hines exhaust, Dynojet stage 2 jet kit, and opening up the air box. It really wakes the bike up. I also had a D.I.D. X-ring chain on mine and Continental TKC80 tires front and rear. Properly equipped and with enough rider skill the KLR is unstoppable. Just take it easy, don't ride too hard for your skills, and you'll get to where you prove all the KLR haters wrong when they say your bike won't handle certain things

    I’m wondering if the yellow or red glossy coated tank will make a difference in terms of durability... I’m about to buy a 2018, completely black KLR650 and the tank is like a matte black, kind of like exposed metal, I feel like it’ll get scratched more easily than this glossy finished one, what do you think?

    • @BOC_Adventures
      @BOC_Adventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a buddy that had the matte black and as far as I could tell it aged fairly well and did not appear scratches or anything. I don’t think you can go wrong either way.

      I bought a 2018 KLR with suspension and engine mods, about $3000 of parts. The KLX mod causes my gas mileage to run about 36mpg but it has plenty of torque to handle street gearing that allows cruising at 85mph all day. The suspension mods keep it stable over 90mph, plus they help off-road.
      The previous owner had been owning KLR's since they came out. His hip finally told him no more KLRs, but he knew what mods to make it a smooth cruising machine on the highway, tougher off-road, and better handling on and off road.

I told him if he didn't mind, I would ride it home for him. He said I wish you could. But your leg. I am an amputee. Not particularly great at anything... but GOOD at everything. I have enjoyed mine the last 5 years. the longest I've owned any single bike. Grip heaters. Charging ports. Engine guards. Thermo Bob. Windscreen stand-off (KLR dash, Happy-Trail Rally... whatever) with a double bubble screen, metal skid, side rack or side guards ( I have HT OSR) and a fork brace. Those are some of the best mods you can do to a KLR.

That being said I am 6'4 around 220 and the bike is really tall. Its fine for me and should fit your height well. The engine is tourqey like a tractor. Well.. I hope my wife appreciates the old saying " It's easier to get forgiveness than to get permission"... I just bought a 2018 KLR 650. First bike in 20 yrs, keep staring at one at work, and life is far too short not to have a toy! I intend on blaming your videos for the purchase!
    Accessories Question Does the tail bag and tank bag provide enough storage for to and from work stuff, or do you think the side paniers are a wise purchase? Also, Centre kickstand, should I just get installed prior to pick up?
    Thoughts??

    • @BOC_Adventures
      @BOC_Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Rodney. Too funny...feel free to blame away. I agree with you life is too short. Enjoy the new KLR and ride safely my friend. The tail bag holds quite a bit but is a little narrow. If you have a big laptop bag it might not fit in there with another bag of clothes. Otherwise though it is pretty roomy. It will fit a 24pk of soda or other beverages of your choice. To be fair though I have not commuted with it yet. I plan to get the Tusk panniers over the winter but got the tail bag just so I would have some storage in the meantime.
      EDIT: As far as the center stand my dealer did not carry them in stock and as far as I can tell only SW-Motech and Happy Trails make them (I may be wrong). Either way I would say it can wait and is a really simple job if you have the tools.

    I noticed you said that you were 6'4". I was going to ask about how much you weighed. I've been wanting a KLR650 but I'm in fear I'm too large for the bike. I'm 6'4" 300lbs. Thanks!

    • @BOC_Adventures
      @BOC_Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I weigh around 215-220 give or take. From what I can tell I dont think you would have any problems. The bike is strong. Now no matter what you weigh the KLR is not fast. However it is a pretty big bike and fits big guys pretty well. Thanks for checking out the video!

    • @robkcra
      @robkcra 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought a 2013 when it was new. Still riding it today, along with a 2015 Super Tenere....which I mention for the perspective it offers me. I also weigh 295 but am only 5’ 11”.
      After 24,000 kms, including rides from Vancouver, BC to Winnipeg, as well as Van to LA, amongst many shorter 1-1500 mi (forgive the use of multiple distance conventions), I can testify that this is a totally competent highway tourer. I have much less experience off-road but the world of KLR riders testify at nauseum to its great competency there as well.
      Keeping my physical stature in mind, I feel the three greatest dangers to this bike are:
      1. It is marginally too tall for me, necessitating great care in uneven territory;
      2. Whilst very stable and good handling on the road, it is a real handful in cross wind. I am led to believe that the front fender may be the primary culprit here so I will be looking for a lower solution, especially as I already have Eagle Mikes fork brace installed ( which allows a mounting point for a fender ).
      3. Resisting (or not) the siren call of adding all manner of farkles which very quickly will overwhelm the greatest charm of the bike.....the low purchase price. But oh how sweet it can be. I may have the most farkleized KLR on the continent????
      I had a Kawasaki dealer tell me yesterday that 2018 is indeed the last year for the bike.....although he says that they are busy with production of more 2018s ad I write. Apparently this is the last and somewhat desperate production run and they will be offered as 2019s, just to get them under the wire.
      So I say welcome to our new clansman and don’t sweat the rumours of termination. Accept the bike for what it is and you will enjoy it for many years to come.
      Rude well!

    A 400+ pound offroad capable bike seems kinda scary to me. If that thing falls on you out in the woods and you get hurt and are in soft dirt or sand, how are you supposed to lift it off? 400+ pounds is the weight of a typical crotch rocket street bike with about 4 times the power of the KLR 650.

RIP KLR, you will be missed. Doohickey fix, Corbin seat, gearing, windshield, handguards, etc. to suit, and you're good for the next 20 years.

    I got a 2015 in 2016 for a good price . I like it and all but I wish I didn't sell my drz400s to get it . It's a boring bike in my opinion. I've only had 5 bikes so there's that. But I call it my old man bike . It will always run and never let you down . It's very heavy off road . It will highway all day and not break a sweat. It's really a great bike . Just boring . I've had a drz400. Dr125. Dr350. Xs650 xr400r plated. The klr will out commute all of them. It will out last them . It is cheaper to run them . But it's boring to ride .

    • @BOC_Adventures
      @BOC_Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryon, I understand your point. I guess it comes down to perspective. For me I got into riding in my 30's and was strictly a street guy so I lack perspective. Based on your comments it seems like you have a lot of dirt experience and it doesn't surprise me that you find the KLR heavy and boring. I agree. But that is what I was looking for. No worries brother. Anyone who rides on 2 wheels is good by me. Thanks for checking out the video!

    • @byronjolly4452
      @byronjolly4452 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just rode it to work today. It really is a great bike . So comfortable. I'm 6'5" . I chopped up a couch cushion and put it on my seat then wrapped vinyl over that so now I have a flat seat . I didn't like how I always rolled onto my gonads on longer rides . Anyway for a half n half bike you couldn't have chosen better . I keep mine bone stock but I took out 2 of the muffler bolts on bottom for a better sound . And i put 16 tooth front sprocket . But if it's stock and it breaks then you'll know what's wrong .happy trails .

    • @evvignes
      @evvignes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Years ago I modded my KLR with:
      Stiffer front springs, stiffer rear shock(modded not replaced), exhaust, removed door to air filter, K&N filter, carb jet kit, bark busters, better handle bars, gel grips, highway pegs, skid plate, 50/50 dunlop tires and other stuff I can’t remember.
      Most important, big ass top case/trunk.
      This completely transformed the bike into a wheele popping street fighter and it wasn’t “boring” anymore. Also way better off-road as well.
      Previous bike was a modded ZX9, for perspective.
      In retrospect, it was to expensive and I wouldn’t do it again, but it was the most fun and usable bike out of the previous 10.
