Tutorial: HOW TO PLAY FAST

  • Hi musicians!
    Have you ever wanted to know how you can get your fingers to move faster, so you can play fast and difficult passages like they're a breeze?
    Here I give a range of exercises designed to get your fingers relaxed, strengthened, confident with difficult note changes and running fluently! This tutorial is especially suited to the recorder, but would fit any wind instrument. And some of the exercises would fit any instrument!
    [also, apologies for crappy lighting in places, in the Netherlands the sun sets at about 2pm and I continue to be surprised by this]
    Thanks to Annabel Knight for teaching me a couple of these when I was studying with her!
    Resources mentioned in the video:
    'Three Exercises' by Kees Boeke, published by zen-on
    'On playing the flute' by Johann Joachim Quantz, published by faber and faber
    'Advanced Recorder Technique: Book 1, fingers and tongue' by Heyens and Bowman, published by Schott
    Click here for my last tutorial: How to play duets!

    Thanks Sarah, my 8 year old daughter found this tutorial very helpful. Her teacher was amazed with her improvement after she followed your advice in her practice. She asks me to pass on a big THANK YOU to you.

    Thank you for creating this channel. I love the idea of learning and practicing the notes well - forwards, backwards, slowly, quickly - so the technique is well learned. I'm reminded of my typing class where the teacher would say learn the techniques well and the speed will come. By the way, I'm a new recorder player. I'm just learning the instrument so I'm very grateful for your channel.

    I absolutely love your videos---this one on fast fingering is especially helpful. Moving my fingers quickly and precisely has always been a difficulty. I'm going to use your suggestions (and I already have a copy of the Boeke exercises----hurray!). Thank you so very much for making these videos. I love playing the recorder (and live a few hours away from Montreal where I take lessons when I can) but here in the States, recorder resources and teachers are few and far between. Again, thank you for your help and excellent suggestions. Best wishes from the Adirondack Mountains in New York State!

    That's the way to teach methodically and with intelligence (not to mention your personal charm), my dear, quite impressive.
    Please don't forget, when weather comes warm and beautiful again, to play something for the trees, somewhere in the woods or forest. The simple act of listening to a well played recorder makes them overjoyed and they will give you something wonderful in return. Maybe you will experience a pleasant surprise after a while, like two crows on a branch trying to imitate your playing with a stick in their beaks while making funny noises... I can tell you that's something unforgettable!
    Thank you again, and may Big Kapok Tree be always with you!

    Thanks for this great video. My teacher, Gwyn Roberts, has shown me that, when practising a difficult passage, one is better off starting at the back end. E.g., start by practising the last two notes, then the last three notes, and so on. Works much better than starting at the front end.

    Fantastic video.
    You say, almost as an aside, that one should isolate a difficult passage and play through it (slowly) till you've got it.
    That has to be the boringly simple answer to "how to play fast" right there. It doesn't sound like impressive advice, until you've actually seen someone work that hard & reap astonishing results

  • @josepmariasaperas
    @josepmariasaperas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hi there Sarah! Thank you so much for these videos! I find them really helpful and you do it in such a lovely way!! Compliments!! About this particular matter, playing fast, I agree with everything you say in it. If I might say, I would add an important thing to me, which is be able to sing what you play. This is of course essential at any speed, but I find that sometimes fingers don't find their place just because the inner ear is simply not working fine. And in this case struggling only with fingers would not lead to success... This is my experience and like to share it with you! Thanks again and please go on with your wonderful videos and tips!!!

    • @Team_Recorder
      @Team_Recorder  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Josep Maria Saperas Lafarga Hi Josep, I agree - the inner ear is so important! I sometimes like to challenge myself (and my ear) with weird note combinations, and make my fingers completely independent. But when making music, the ear is the most important, fingers are just your tools!

    Sarah:
    Thanks very much for your many video lessons. I just discovered them.
    I started playing recorder in about 1960 but have been seriously backsliding in the interim,
    playing guitar, mandolin, violin and string bass.
    For a leaking recorder joint you might try teflon tape, a very thin tape used to keep threaded plumbing joints from leaking. You get it at a hardware store.

      Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder thanks as well. I dont have resquests other than watching more videos from you as they enrich us all, but if you do not mind, how did you become a professional? Brilliant, Sarah! @Carlos Villasenor, I play clarinet and while the two instruments are partly similar, they're also very different. Especially the embouchure, I think. Why not focus on one, get good at it and then move on to the other. They're both harder and easier in their own way. The thing I love about recorder is it's easier to tongue than clarinet!

    My biggest obstacles (that I am currently aware of) when playing fast are going from (on an alto)
    F - E flat - D - E flat - F
    B' - A' - G'# - A' - B' (2nd octave)
    F'' - D' - F''
    Obviously, there are many more tricky ones, but these seem to crop up quite a lot in baroque pieces.

    • @Team_Recorder
      @Team_Recorder  7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      It takes time! Like learning any new language - in the beginning it's slow and frustrating and you're translating in your head, but over time it gets easier, and before you know it you're reading the notes without even thinking about it. A helpful tip it to read songs you already know by ear; folk songs etc. Keep at it!

    I bought this from a yard sale. we had them in fourth grade. Im a guitar player and im wanting to develop my theory. i have c major scale down pat :) lol Of course i know the g major scale also. My question is what is the easiest way to learn the # and b's. Is this a good approach to learn the notes or should i just grind from the video where you showed all the notes? from low c to g is easy but then the half step fingering gets complicate after that. I guess im asking what do you think the easiest way to learn all the notes is?

    Hi Sarah!
    That's an Awesome One there!
    Please how do I hit the Note E, third 8va on a Soprano recorder clean?

      Open the thumb hole only a very tiny bit, have a very thin and fast air stream, and give it a good articulation with your tongue!

    do you have videos for soprano recorder players

    • @Team_Recorder

      Hi Jazmin, good question! Most of what I say in my videos can be applied to any size of recorder. I often demonstrate things with ther alto, but you can do it on soprano too! So in the 'how to play fast' video, the finger exercises all apply to soprano too. Check out 'how to sound good on a soprano recorder' for some advice on playing the smaller instruments!

    Do you have one on how to do cuts, rolls and crans on the whistle?

    Dear Ms. Jeffrey, most Baroque compositions have an anchored 'pedal' note alternating with a moving set of notes usually scalar & in semi quavers. How does one practise these passages? Harry. By the way, it's not gravity that brings the fingers back but the state of equilibrium between flexors and extensors..I think!

    How do I know when I am ready to move up from my Yamaha 300 series plastic alto to a wood instrument?

    • @rodyburstein4996

      You can get a great tone from a wooden recorder. Plastic recorders are great, but wooden is even better, so if you can afford one, I'd say go for it!

    Hi do you have any ways to help stretch the pinky finger for playing alto, for the 3rd hole towards the mouthpiece? Soprano is easy for my pinky placement but with alto it starts to hurt from over-stretching. Thank you!!!

      Hi Andre, for this you can check my video ‘how to stretch the big recorders’!

    Press hard on B. If you can't play with your left at all, use your right hand.

    Anchor the fingers that don't need to move. Why did I not think of that? It's the same breakthrough that allowed my chord changes on guitar to go faster. LOL. I'm making it harder on myself!

    I am the absolute greenest of beginners. I simply can't figure how use my ring finger on those "tandem" holes. Do you have a video showing a scale for the soprano recorder, note-by-note. If you don't, could you recommend one?
