I love how Justin pointed out that the average person in Singapore is more well off than the average person in UK. Singaporeans don’t realise how lucky they are....
She said that the westerners normally move out when they started working and rent is a large percentage of their expenditure, due to high cost of living. if every working singaporean who are single live by themselves and rent a room/apartment, then we will not be so well off. Nothing to do with how "lucky" we are in sg, but our social norms give us this advantage in this case.
Oh gosh this is SSSOOOOOO INTERESTING. please do more of this! It's very insightful not just for the local but for everyone in the whole world as well!
was interesting the way you said being in Singapore was like a warm blanket around your body.. the cold in Heathrow is a shock if having not experienced it in a long time when first arriving in the UK..
Hearing the perspectives of a local about their culture/traditions/misconceptions etc is always interesting and refreshing. Before we took our GCE O levels, I remember my teacher said " There are native english-speaking students who fail their O level English"...you know like a D7. True?
@@kimlt9923 No offence to Canadians, but I have noticed that Canadian university students can't write as well as their Singaporean counterparts. They tend to write as though they are speaking. It all boils down to the education system even if you are a native English speaker.
I’m a Malaysian and newly moved to Singapore. It’s nice watching your videos. You lot remind me of my Brtiish friends back when I was studying there. Missing my time there. Tc x
15:45 Oh my goodness, YES. That's a pet peeve of mine. BAKED BEANS MUST BE HEATED. Thankfully, growing up, most of the western food stalls near my HDB block had the baked beans heated. Or maybe they had them stored in a tub near the grill/stove haha.
I used to work as a dental hygienist at a dental clinic with quite a lot of expat patients. I have got to say, most westerners (at least those that I met) pay more attention to dental health then Singaporeans, like going for regular check ups. Not all the expats I saw were from the UK though. And most westerners would know what a dental hygienist as compared to Singaporeans.
Loved this video. I must admit, I too had some misconceptions, especially the ones about most Brits living in cottages and the population being well off in general. On a side note, can we have Justin do a tutorial on how he snaps his fingers?
I posted that question bout drum n bass and i love it, garage, grime, etc wayy more than edm here! i keep hearing it in british shows and movies. it's such a unique sound! : D
The thing about accent is true for Singapore too. There are many accents here. Those who speak in a more Singlish or ethnic influenced accnet and intonation usually come from pooree backgrounds. Whereas those who speak better English (and more internationally recognisable) are more middle or upper class
I had a british colleague in 93- 96, he loves spore food assortment and the language culture and he complants food back home is "sianz" and the sky is gloomy rainy most of the time
The "Bad Teeth" thing comes from US soldiers who were stationed in the UK during World War II. The state of British teeth in general at the time was terrible compared with Americans, and the generalisation stuck.
This is a fun video to watch. Didn't know Plymouth is pronounced the way it is. I would have said ply as in plywood and mouth as in mouth. Yes baked beans should be served warm.

it may be difficult for primary school students and adults who forget everything upon graduation but it would be a walk in the park for justin. he doesn't need to know the way primary school students are taught to solve, all the questions can be solved using methods taught in high school.
Hey G & J, How can you not love the Queen?? As a Brit I would say that 70% + of Brits do have very warm feelings towards the Queen. Maybe not so much for Prince Harry/Meghan right now but definitely lots of love for William and Kate!!
Excellent video, and very revealing; as much about the questions as the answers. I grew up in the 50s & 60s so I’ve seen some changes. On music, while the music I knew as a teenager was great, you can’t keep listening to the same music for 50 or 60 years, so I’ve tried to find new stuff. I never got into Urban/Grime, etc, but I have loved EDM, especially Trance, since I heard it about 20 years ago. Currently loving Rina Sawayama’s new album (different again). Do Brits know much about Asian culture? Well, is there an Asian culture? I’d probably agree that not many Brits know much about East Asian culture(s), but I reckon we’re pretty familiar with the various cultures of South Asia.
Asian culture? Well, there's Chinese culture, Malay culture, Korean culture, Japanese culture, etc - all unique in themselves but perhaps share some overlapping similarities... just like European culture?
Kim LT Absolutely - I get all that. The impression I got from the question was that there was a single Asian culture (possibly Chinese?) and whether or not Brits were familiar with that. I was responding with the view, which I probably didn’t express very well, that Asia is so vast, with so many different peoples and faiths, that there isn’t a single, or even predominant, Asian culture. And to support that I mentioned the cultures of South Asia - e.g. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh - which are very different from the cultures of East Asia; and that typical Brits would have different degrees of familiarity with those various Asian cultures. Certainly I wasn’t familiar with Chinese culture but I did have some familiarity with Indian and Pakistani culture, for example.
you should try dining at pazzion cafe @ jewel after the CB! their hot baked beans are ABSOLUTELY delicious and made from scratch! not those canned shit that most cafes served. the price they charge for the meals aren't overly expensive too! check out their menu online!
Commuting in and around Essex into London on a daily basis (before lockdown) and sorry to correct you Justin but absolutely no conversation from anyone on their daily commutes! Everyone glued to their phones 😂📱
To be fair justin will strike up conversation with anyone haha, but that’s such a shame :( I guess phone culture has definitely changed in the last six years since we lived there!
Yep definitely, I suppose it also depends what train you're on. The trains with the bar/counter service and tins of Becks, Stella and Ghost Ship IPA do tend to be the ones that strangers strike more conversations on... must be a correlation there 😄

The closest you can get to UK fish n chips in Singapore is Smiths along Bukit Timah Rd. Singapore's hawker centres, restaurants, seem to use french fries rather than chips. In UK, Chinese & Indian takeways are just as popular as Fish n Chips. UK is very tribal, collectively not individually. North hates the south, south hates the north. Scots & Welsh hate the English. Liverpool hates Manchester n vice versa. Newcastle hates Sunderland n vice versa. And it is the same with other cities throughout the UK. You can be stereotyped just by where you come from. For example. If you are from Yorkshire or Scotland you are supposed to be mean with your money, which by my experience is not the case. If you are from Liverpool you are a thief, again totally wrong.

a question that no one asked probably: are Brits very tolerant towards foreigners? I will be studying in the UK next year and I'm from Poland. many ppl told me Brits usually like to isolate themselves and they come off as cold and dry when it comes to building a relation with them
It depends on where you study I guess but in Scotland, people are pretty welcoming to everyone. I've had experiences in Liverpool, London and Manchester where people were being racist towards me but I can only assume they're a minority of sour apples. Most of the time, everyone is cool! 🙂
@@joanna.pytelx It actually depends on the individual. I'm from Singapore and when i was travelling with my parents in Switzerland last year, we met an older british couple from Leeds on the train. They were the sweetest people we met during the entire trip to switzerland and prague. i think in every society, even here in singapore, there are a few bad apples. Don't judge a certain group of people based on someone else's experience.
I had no idea that baked beans needed to be hot. When I buy baked beans, it comes in a can from a supermarket & when I get home, I just open the can and eat them, either straight out of the can, or after pouring them into a bowl or onto my plate. I had no idea they had to be heated up or cooked first. O. M. G. Really?? Maybe there are others who also don't know this, so maybe that's why you don't get hot baked beans here.
Its funny peoples perceptions of weather / climate and statistical reality . Almost everywhere in UK only 1 day in 3 has any rain in it on average - and of course that 1 day it generally rains only a short fraction of the day not necessarily allday. Days where it rains all day are rare. I reckon if you would step outside your house at random only one time in a hundred would you find it raining. Sunshine varies a lot from only 20% in some places to nearly half the time in the sunnier spots.

yeah definitely the "stranger danger" culture in a random outdoor setting, BUT i think in an internal space, we can open and chatty especially to tourists and foreigners. Depends on the setting.
I’ve heard much about how the GCSEs differ significantly in Singapore and in the UK 🤣 would be crazy if there could b a comparison of some sort done LOL
Hi Guys, chanced upon your vlogs and found them insightful & hilarious....just to add on to your sharing.....Brits love tea breaks and have a good natter; they also like to complain about the traffic+endless road works+what was on the telly the night before (in addition to the weather); eat strange (but some say delicious) food like mushy peas, fish fingers, black pudding; work life balance is sacred - especially POETS day; sarcastic, self-deprecating comedy (piss taking) is very much the essence of British culture e.g. Harry Enfield, Monty python; class system is latent but some people like to judge someone’s background (unfairly) based on their accents e.g. Essex. OK, enough from me time for that cup of tetleys and some digestives......

yeah definitely the "stranger danger" culture in a random outdoor setting, BUT i think in an internal space, we can open and chatty especially to tourists and foreigners. Depends on the setting.
I’ve heard much about how the GCSEs differ significantly in Singapore and in the UK 🤣 would be crazy if there could b a comparison of some sort done LOL
Do most brits support their local premier league club?
Kong Leong Yip some do some dont
British food is delicious. Indian food is delicious. I love all food 😍
Why isn't Hotel Management a valid course? It's a business degree.
