Get a Shred-R (which is also rated for wasps). It's essentially a Crosman Vigilante (CO2 powered) but with a smooth barrel (for those who understand shotgun patterns, rifled barrels cause wider spread, which you typically don't want). Lots of videos interchanging parts including adding a longer barrel for more range (I haven't done that yet). 10 shot rotary clip and quick to reload a new clip. I usually get 30-40 good shots per CO2 cartridge, then it drops off fast. Only issue is you have to use up the entire cartridge pretty much within the day, maybe two.

  • @jddoe6919

One big advantage of this, is in 'tight spaces'
where you cannot use a fly swatter,
like the space between 'windows with blinds'.
Also, it does not 'squash' the fly in your window glass,
which most people hate cleaning .
So, it definitely has an advantage over the $1 fly swatter.

  • @SomeoneElseOverHere

I suspect you may have inadvertently left out 3 of the most important advantages a salt gun should have over a fly swatter: Preventing escapes, hitting places swatters can't reach and not slapping a filthy swatter all over your home's surfaces.
Bugs resting on a surface seem to frequently remain in place for some time, but attempt to flee if you get near swatting range. You should be able to point a salt gun at a resting insect and fire from within 1-3 feet away without alerting it into escape mode. To me, that alone would be a massive advantage.
Bugs can also frequently get in or near corners, tiny openings, areas with delicate objects, or areas a bit higher up than fly swatter range. A salt gun should make it much easier to ensure a bug kill in those situations if you patiently aim before firing. Again, that seems like a massive advantage to me.
Lastly, swatters tend to get nasty bug parts and germs all over them, which can get transferred to your walls or leave a mess to clean off of the swatter if you want to keep it sanitary. The fact that a salt gun doesn't have to make physical contact with an insect to kill it seems like it should allow you to entirely avoid that issue. That could be a massive feature to someone who prefers keeping their home and most of its contents sanitary.
I admittedly wrote this before trying one, but it seems like it should easily accomplish all of those benefits. Is that a mistaken impression?

    • @JacqueALoo
      @JacqueALoo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nailed it! 💯
most fly swatters only reach about a foot and a half further than our hands can reach. I've nailed flies from 4-5 feet away many times. A follow up shot is necessary most of the time but is definitely optional. Usually they're so dazed you can just pick up the fly and throw it outside. Some of their wings are blown clean off after I hit them so they can go for a light jog like I'm sure they've always dreamed of

Yup, you got it. I added in another comment, it's also advantageous over bug spray since no chemicals in your house around your kids or pets. And the salt it shoots in a shot is very small. I plan to test out larger salt but need to get one with the anti-caking agent so it doesn't clump up. I live in a humid coastal city.

Another advantage of the Bug-a-salt is you can get flies that land in tight quarters where a flyswatter won't fit, or if it lands on a object that swinging a flyswatter would knock over and cause a mess, or break something. I've had my for about 3 years, and I use it mostly for the small German roaches that are stupid enough to show themselves. It works great on them. We also have the jumbo size "B-52" American roaches that resemble land-lobsters. These guy's require a "Red Ryder" as the salt blast will not penetrate their hard exterior back. A couple times when they happen to be crawling on the outside of my screen door, and thus exposing their soft belly, a blast of salt at point blank range thru the screen, and into their vulnerable undersides has knocked them to the ground, but still requires a second or third blast to finish them off. A
Daisy Red Ryder a better option, but be careful, or you'll shoot your eye out. 😜

I have the Bug-a-salt 2.0, and with my experience it’s way better than a fly swatter. 1. The sneak attack. Flies are hardwired to fly away as soon as it sees a shadow, or movement. So with the Big-a-salt you can put some distance between you and the fly, out of range of the fly’s senses, and kill it. 2. It’s virtually mess free killing. A fly when smacked with something, will splatter it’s guts everywhere, leaving a purplish red stain on either your windows, or food dishes, causing excessive clean up. 3. Mid air kills. No more waiting for a fly to land on something. If you see it flying a pre determined flight path, use your skeet shooting skills and take it out mid air. 4 splattered flies attract more flies. Although more flies equals more fun and target practice, when you smash a fly, it’s buddies are gonna get a whiff of it, and come to the rescue, which inside your house you don’t need. 5. Bugs hate salt. So as you shoot you’re actually deterring more bugs from being attracted to the area, so the number of flies wanting to be in your house goes down. I live on a farm so before Bug-a-salt, flies would be in the house constantly, and the fly swatter would only attract more. It was a constant battle every year until wintertime. Now this year, I’ve seen maybe just a few flies in the house, all of which were one shot one kills. So from my experience, it’s way way better than a fly swatter. The Price of it, is out weighed by the fun, and the enjoyment of having a peaceful fly free home living space. But if you look at the technology that it is, it’s quite a complex item. It isn’t a simple nerf gun that shoots salt instead of nerf darts. It took a lot of trial and error to make something like this, and it’s value is at a level that, should it wear out, or break I’d be happy to buy it again. It works really really well, and the amount of shots I get from such a small amount of salt is incredible it’s around 80 shots per reload. Which is a lot of fly killing fun. If your on the fence about paying the money for it, I say your home living space can’t afford to do without it. Once you master it, your home will too be fly free. And on the plus side if you want to sharpen your skills with it all you need is some aluminum foil. Draw a target with a marker, and you can target practice with it.

I'm going to have to disagree about the fly swatter vs the Bug a Salt 🧂, I'm not very good with a fly swatter, trying to creep up on one before it flies away is half the battle and then accuracy is another problem and finally, at least in our case, using a fly swatter with the metal handle and swinging it fast enough to be quicker than the fly, the handle usually bends in mid-air and then I have to bend it back into shape while hanging my head in defeat after the fly goes off to the coffee table laughing at me 🤣.
So I think with those factors alone it's worth the $ to add this to my arsenal!

I have to say, your assessment that it has no practical advantages over a flyswatter is extremely off-base. The versatility of being able to shoot, rather than physically hit, is a huge plus. Sometimes a flyswatter doesn't fit into a nook or cranny. Plus it's much slower. I had to use one of these to knock a roach off of a high, unreachable ceiling. I don't know of any other flyswatter that can do that!

When spiders get frightened after you accidentally invade their homes, they bite with intent to kill. It’s the same for people. Spiders accidentally invade homes, and people get scared and kill them. So, there’s my devils advocate for today.

I bought this product about 2 years ago and I'm still using it. I prefer to use kosher salt as opposed to table salt. It's like the difference between birdshot and buckshot. Most of the time the kosher salt turns the offending flying insect into a black and red smear. If not, I'll pump again and hit it point blank while it's stunned. I'm almost 50 and very out of shape, and had no issue cocking this device repeatedly. I also recommend the laser sight.

I love my BaS 3.0! I'd add that compared to a pest spray (like RAID) it doesn't put chemicals into your house (which you don't want if you have kids or pets). It also does a good job on spiders, though I prefer to catch them and take the outside since they are good bugs. But if you need to get rid of a spider in weird corner where you can't catch it (or a high ceiling), it does a good job but you have to shoot it from 6" away. I've taken out flies from 2 ft and more. I think the instructions say "up to 3 ft". I now bring it with me whenever I'm invited to a BBQ. :-)
As for the entertainment value, I got one for my neighbour and she will sit on her back patio and take out whatever flies by. The day I got it for her, she was all giggles the next day telling me about all the things she shot.
As for spread, I tested on aluminum foil. From 3ft, about 10", from 1.5ft, about 5" and from 6" away it blew a 3/4" hole through the foil.
Have since bought one for each of my kids and a couple buddies. My son-in-law sends me videos once in a while when he shoots something. I told my son not to use it on wasps, but he was a able to isolate one and told me it took 5 shots. But you can search youtube and find many videos explaining (and showing) why using on wasps is a bad idea, especially if near their nest. That's a job for their new Shred-R.

I've shot several dozen wasps with it, I've never been able to kill a wasp with ours (3.0 Black Fly Edition). Even when a wasp or two has dropped onto the gravel drive, I've shot the thing over and over until I get so tired of pumping the bug a salt that I just stomp it dead. But even the ones that I was able to drop to the gravel, I had to get so close I am not sure why the thing didn't fly away. Any further and I hit them, they get blown off the surface usually but are more than able to just fly off.

You’re able to get rid of any insect that is a danger or pest from a safe distance and it’s far more efficient than a flyswatter in that regard. Way more likely the get the bug on the first try.
