Rating doesnt indicate level of play in absolute terms, only level of play relative to the player pool. Therefore having had a rating before engines and the internet doesnt make it more impressive.
@@peterquinones3522 Fischer was great. That doesnt contradict what I said. What I said was that ELO rating measures player strength relative to the player pool and therefore doesnt become more impressive because it was before engines - which is what you suggested in your original post.

Has to be so frustrating to get Magnus out of castling, he's moving his knights backwards, reverse development, shuffling his unprotected king around. But you just can't find any exploitable weakness in his position. Then you play the pogo stick, or whatever waiting moves you're doing hoping for something. But it's Magnus who is the one who almost always finds the weakness to lean on.

@@nikhildawani2913 because the gap between fischer and his peers was better than magnus and his peers. fischer walked away from the game he could of stayed on top for a long time. when comparing different generations you have to look at the gap between peers because the next generation builds off the knowledge of the previous one. so yes magnus would beat fischer but would he of beat fischer if he was born the same year as fischer…unlikely.
