    I (a 70 year old female who has recently had to move from power tools to hand tools due to eye sight, etc.) am so encouraged by Sara's willingness and ability to start this new adventure! I am far more intimidated by the few hand tools I have acquired then by my trusty power tools. She gives me the confidence that I need to carry on with my commitment to myself to continue to work at these new skills. You go, girl!!!

    It's always fun to see Sarah in your videos. She's a real trooper. Looking forward to this series. I can do very precise power tool work but very much still learning with hand tools and a traditional woodworking bench is on my "to do" list. Mine only comes to the shop when I need help with something large and heavy or to see if I'm still alive.

    I love it. Only piece of advice from a novice: it's easier to start sawing with the front of the saw, because the angle of the teeth is less aggressive

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      there are many that hold to that, but I generally find that more difficulty to control the saw with he hand over 2 feet from the edge you are trying to control. learning to lift the saw weight off the teeth for the start will serve in a lot more situations. if your saw does not have progressive teeth, or working in a situation where the toe is not an option, but there are a lot of people that like to start on the toe. that is what makes the sport fun. there is no right way to do it.

    @bigscaryguy13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That was ridiculously silly and gave me a great idea of what to expect when I start making my own bench soon! Thank you for focusing on this from the perspective of a beginner!
    On a related note, have you ever considered doing a video on your own journey becoming a professional hand tool woodworker, or the path you have in mind for your wife? You've discussed the craft side in the past, but I don't think I've ever seen a video on the business side of things. How did you find your early jobs? How do you figure out a fair price? I've seen plenty of videos that discuss power tool based projects that are good moneymakers, but they almost always rely on table saws. Have you found any reliable money making projects using only hand tools?
    Thank you so much for your great content! Your channel has helped inspire me to to start my own journey working with just hand tools. I look forward to having these new videos to follow along with!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man. I do not sell what I make I just teach it and give things away. There really is not much money in the hand tool path as it just takes too much time. I only know of 2 people that are 100% hand tools and making a living selling what they make and both of them have developed the name where they can sell a table for $10,000+ and that kind of name takes decades to develop. hand tools can help add that touch to a piece that was mostly made with power tools, but there really is not much of a path to all hand tools woodworking.

    Early on, I got the impression that Sara didn't like you having a TH-cam channel. It's nice to see her so involved now.

    You got the deluxe big-box lumber. I think mine must be second hand since it never comes wrapped. 🙂

      Lol yep. Menards sells all of their hardwoods wrapped.

    Hi! I'm also a begginer and I'm about to build my first workbench! I can't do glue ups so I was wondering how much is enough thickness for my top? Thanks

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of people will do 2x with supports under, so you don't need that much.

      @@WoodByWright thanks a lot! I think I'll go with approximately 5cm hard wood planks with supports and I'll see how it goes! Again thank you for your help.

    I know that this is a starter bench and poplar is cheap, but isn't it a bit weak for a workbench top?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all. It will dent up but it is plenty strong. I would rather dent by bench then the work.
