    Wow what a great find Cam! Thank you. This fridge seems like a no brainer, even if a bit pricey. Amazon only has two left, you’re helping them sell! Would be great for the Model Y too. Now I’m hungry for a camping breakfast, and pull out my old scouting mess kit.

      When you compare it to the kinds of coolers that can keep stuff cold for more than a day, it’s actually not that expensive. Interesting to see the inventory drop so fast already at Amazon, but I guess I’m not surprised. It’s a really great accessory to have.

    Camping requires sunset cocktails. Cocktails require ice. Portable fridge frees up space for more ice in the cooler and keeps things dry without worrying about ice constantly. More ice in the cooler equals more cocktails. More cocktails equals...YES. Gotta have both. It's a no brainer. This is also a good item for when I'm on the lake in my 21' sailboat. It is a great match for the Jackery 1000w solar system for a weekend on the water without having to run an engine for refrigeration. And we all know camping in a sailboat requires cocktails. 😉 (And no, I'm not an alcoholic. Alcoholics go to meetings and I don't do meetings.)

    Thank you for this great video, it convinced me to buy the fridge. I found a way to close the center console cover even if the electrical cord of the fridge is plugged into the 12v socket (maybe you could do a video about it!) I realized that the cover could almost close if I place the wire at the back/right corner of the console (actually it did close but was pinching the wire too much and left a mark on it). So I simply took a piece of sandpaper and sanded the contact point between the wire and the console cover. I removed just a little bit of plastic from the undercover so now it can close on the wire without damaging it. There's still friction so the wire stays in place but it can slide in or out of the console if I push or pull it.
    Thank you for everything you share on the web. You brought my spouse and I's car
    camping life to the next level! (TESMAT + FRIDGE)
    Oh and another thing... I you remove the rear bench seats, then the seats fold down perfectly flat. A must if you
    sleep on the stomach like I do! It can be done in 2 minutes as you can see here: th-cam.com/video/GNQla0zTg1Q/w-d-xo.html or here th-cam.com/video/44KY--YcbmI/w-d-xo.html

      It’s entirely dependent on the difference between your set temp and outside temp. The nice thing is that at night, the HVAC doesn’t have to deal with radiant heat from the sun. Plan for 20% range loss, but it will often be less than that.

  • @JessicaFEREM
    @JessicaFEREM 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you think about it, if everything is already at temperature, then all the cooler in the car is doing is maintaining it, which is a lot less power.
    that and the lid being on top means that it can keep cold even when you open it.

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That actually was my point in precooling everything at 120V. However, opening and closing even a top loading fridge does allow quite a bit of air to be exchanged as you reach in and move stuff around.

    • @JessicaFEREM
      @JessicaFEREM 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheTechofTech that is still a lot less air being moved around than a normal vertical fridge, a fridge like that when you open it, it immediately drops all the cold air, in a cooler the air is going down.
      Of course it does come out, but not 100% of it is what I mean.

    • @JessicaFEREM
      @JessicaFEREM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also best idea is to fill the rest of the cooler with gel packs to the top so that in the case of the battery running dry, it gets the most cooling after the battery dies, and as you did, you could keep frozen water bottles, but I say gel packs because the gel lasts longer than water. Nothing wrong with the water though.

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a great tip. Yes, a full fridge/freezer is easier to keep cool both when on and when off than one that is only partially full. Filling the leftover space with gel packs is a great idea.

    Please one question : when you plug the fridge to 12v ac, it’s take energy from the small 12v Tesla battery or from big battery using for driving ?

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The short answer is “yes.” :)
      The 12V system is continuously charged by the high voltage system anytime the 12V outlet is on, so there is no risk to draining it. When the HV system goes to “sleep,” all of the outlets also shut off.

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In a Tesla, there is a relatively small 12V battery to run various safety systems as well as your standard 12V accessories. Its voltage is monitored, and it is continuously topped off by the high voltage battery. There is no way to run the 12V battery to zero using the 12V power port in a Tesla without first running the high voltage battery to zero, but then you have bigger problems.

    Any concern about keeping the fridge in the sub trunk overnight if in bear country? Thanks for the video.

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really depends on how bold the bears are, but bears will smell food in a refrigerator in a subtrunk in a car, and if they want it badly enough, they will try to get it. However, people camp with fridges all the time and somehow manage not to get their vehicles wrecked. I think it's just something to keep in mind. Best bet is to contact the property management (USNPS or state park rangers...) to see what their advice is.

    We have a 32 quart that we purchased on sale through www.costco.com It fits perfectly in the trunk of our Model 3, but not the sub-trunk. It's big enough to store the big pie that we purchased at a roadside fruit stand.
    You have to fool the car into keeping the accessory port powered up. We leave the Sentry mode on, which uses power itself. If you are using Camp Mode, the battery will stay charged up and the same when Cabin Overheat Protection is active. You won't wear down your 12 volt lead acid battery, because the car keeps that battery charged up!
    If you connected the cooler directly to the 12 volt battery, would the car still keep that battery charged up?

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d never pop the access panel on a Tesla to connect the fridge directly to the 12V battery, but Tesla should be blind to that as far as monitoring battery voltage.

      @mitchellbarnow1709 3 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @dmiller9786
    @dmiller9786 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You don't need to plug a compressor based into 120v if you own a Tesla. It uses little power, like 5-8 watts per hour. Thermoelectric coolers use much more energy. You don't seem to be testing a compressor based fridge.

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are confusing this with a different type of product. This is very much a compressor-driven refrigerator. I’ve uploaded a companion video with the access panel off for you to see for yourself. However, as I say in the video and you can see on the interior label itself, this is 65W peak draw and 45W average draw for 1kWh of consumption per day. You aren’t going to be able to run that off a standard automotive battery without running its voltage low enough to trigger the low voltage cutoff, just as I show in the video.

      The new Model 3 frunk is so much smaller due to the placement of the new heat pump that I’m not sure anyone is going to bother. That said, you have a much more efficient Model 3 than those that can fit a frunk cooler.

      The smaller frunk first showed up in August 2020, which is why that’s the cutoff for the EVAnnex frunk cooler fitting. The heat pump started showing up in Model 3s sometime thereafter, not necessarily 100% correlated with the other changes to the interior and power trunk and maybe heated steering wheel.

      @@joeee60 this seems to be the consensus. If it gets below 20% I have to be sure to turn the car on again after it charges back to that level, or not turn it off until it's charged that high.

    great video review of the fridge.. but seeing you butcher those eggs in that tin pan is so very sad. Invest in a cheap $10 nonstick and never create a mess like that again please...

      That's my Boy Scout mess kit I got back in the early '80s. lol I do bring nonstick pans more often than not, but those eggs were fine.
