Behind the camera: Moving the GoPro while Sunfish sailing

  • Owning one camera means it gets moved on the water while Sunfish sailing--often in high winds or high seas. Sunfish sailing videos are more interesting with a variety of camera angles so I take the risks while sailing my small sailboat.

Love these videos! Everyone has gotten so professional making videos in the last 10 years, it's nuts how much effort you guys put into all these videos. I appreciate all of these, I enjoy learning. Another year has passed without me getting a chance to try sailing, hopefully this coming year!

I love that you recognize the effort and happy to hear you call my video professional! It's certainly been a learning process. Winter sailing? Maybe you're meant to sail a ton next summer... maybe an overnight trip...

@@AdventuresInReach I am currently looking to find a Sunfish or the like still, but the wife is having me fix up her dad's old Mustang over the winter. What she says goes lol

I am new to making TH-cam videos and it is crazy how much work can go into moving the camera to get more interesting angles. I can't imagine trying to do it while sailing. However, I do have a Sunfish, and am also new to sailing, but fully intend to film while sailing. I did get a chest harness for my Go Pro. Have you used a chest harness while sailing your Sunfish and how did it turn out?

I have used a chest harness a couple times for sailing but I've found that I generally don't like the footage I get. It's often bumpy, obscured from my arms or whatever I'm doing, and doesn't show a person (me) doing the activity. I don't think that's the most interesting. However, if that's what you're comfortable with i would certainly recommend starting there and seeing what you think.

How do you keep the spray from covering the camera lense? My (admittedly) cheap Go-Pro cams need constant wiping! BRE, you use some great camera angles!

Some people luck or spit on it like work swim goggles. Some also apply a water repellent like rainex. I've also heard of folks burning the coating off the actual lens to help with that...although I can't bring myself to risk it. Mine gets wet and I then cut out those parts of the clips and also attempt to be diligent about blowing the drops off. Sailing in high wind also helps😏

The way you are conservative by having just one camera and using it in many ways is a huge positive.

Thank you. It's also a huge inconvenience if I'm taking shots from multiple angles...and creates a risk of losing my camera to the bottom of the lake, but yes, I do like minimalism where possible.
