This is because GPs make way less money than specialists and med school is super expensive. That’s not all. There is a shortage of GPs despite hospitals often turning down potential residents. Federal hours regulations don’t apply to doctors in residency. Some residents work up to 100 hours in a week. One resident has the job of 2.5. It severely hurts their ability to help patients AND prevents students from entering residency. It’s total artificial scarcity because hospitals want to pay the fewest amount of salaries possible. If Biden only wants milquetoast around-the-edges reforms, he could reduce the hours cap on residents to 40 and forgive federal student loan debt for doctors. But democrats won’t even do the tiny reforms. So go big. Make all public medical school free. Nationalize hospitals. Go big.
