Great job guys. I didn’t take this as a slight against Subaru at all. As all of us in snow states know, Subaru is the mainstream standard for awd. Unfortunately, not all of us have 1) a Subaru dealer we want to deal with or 2) we’re weary of the decline in build quality ( justified or not) or 3) we’ve driven Subarus for years and really would like to see what else may be out there. Personally, I’d like a Maverick but dealers around me are still playing the over MSRP game.
Lifted hatch backs are a great segment of car. I don't get the hate, they are practical due to their hatchback nature, and their ground clearance is more forgiving than sedans/compacts when it comes to some of the garbage tier roads we have, but they aren't nearly as obnoxious on the road as midsize or full size SUVs. Edit: whoops replied to the wrong guy
I feel the same way and actually branched out looking at the cx-30, and a Rav4, but ended up buying a 22 subaru Crosstrek. The extra clearance and the subaru awd system made me just fall back on Subaru.
Respectfully, when I think cheap cars I think between $7000-$13000. I would really appreciate a list that reflects this price range (as a broke college student who lives in a very snowy mountainous region). If you look up "cars under 5k-8k" in the search there is hundreds of videos, if you could also do a list like that for AWD cars I would be eternally grateful.
In that price point you don’t even sniff a new AWD anything. Get a 10+ year old Honda CR-V with 100k+ miles on it that is well maintained . It’ll likely still last longer than any of the cars on this list.
I'd take the Eclipse Cross all day everyday, S-AWC plus the torquey 1.5T is a good combo, plus literally one of the easiest/reliable modern cars on the market today, my mechanic was so impressed at how easy and simple things are.
A car that's easy to repair, but breaks often, or won't last more than 10-15 years is NOT reliable. Look at the reliability rankings from consumer reports before you respond. Also, look around you when on the road or in any parking lot... not many old Mitsubishi vehicles around(truly a shame...as I've always liked their products styling and performance).
@@apexchaser6187 I'm basing it on my own personal experience, we've own one for years now and no issues, my aunt has one and no issues, mines at 150K and not a single problem, each owner has different experience, some get good units and some got lemons, that's the case for every brand, I live in a country where Mitsubishi is literally 2nd to Toyota in terms of sales, almost every car in the road is either a Mitsubishi or a Toyota, there are 20-25 year old Mitsubishi's here still driving.
This is helpful, thanks. Subaru has the worst paint I've ever experienced on a modern car. If you breath on it, the paint chips. As always, Tommy, Go Buffs! Going to be a good year for us.
Eh, I pulled some paint off my Renegade just washing it with a car wash wand. Thankfully it was inside the hatch on a part that doesn't see much of the elements. Ripped the top coats right off the primer. I was just trying to clear out some grime by the hinges.
I’ve got a 22 y.o. WRX wagon that has never been parked in a garage, baking in SoCa sun every day that has excellent paint, not one fleck of clear coat failure or cracking.
99% of all cars with bad paint jobs is because they were ordered with a cheap inferior protectice clear coat sealant. Always discuss with the dealer the sealing coat. Often times they dont disclose that it doesnt have a sealing coat. You have to pay more for it. Also, in many states dealerships are allowed to recieve vehicles with a certain percentage damage. Fix it up and sell it to you. If the car hauler damaged the vehicle in any way. They do not have to disclose this information. Unless you force them to in arbitrary agreement.
I like the "just a lifted hatchback" cars. I don't need tons of ground clearance but not having the seat on the ground is great. lol I currently have a 2018 Frontier that I have yet to come close to using to full potential. Sure would like something that gets better mileage but still has AWD. Thanks for the overview.
Well as a GTI owner there are definite advantages of having your seat on the ground. You get better mpg's and much better handling. That being said you have to drop down into them and climb back out. The other issue is I have to use the beep feature on my key to find it in the parking lot. One big issue, for beat up winter roads you want a softer suspension and taller tire side walls.
I bet it isn’t. You can do the research yourself actually. If you go by comments, then exaggerations like yours create an impression that it’s that high. They have had some problems over the past few years, but never near even 20%. To have 10% is an extreme failure rate and they weren’t quite there. Don’t believe all of the comments as it seems people need to outdo each other and exaggerate either up or down. It like hearing from Toyota guys that think they don’t break at all. Toyotas break more often than believed. They are still great vehicles, but not the mythical cars that some would lead you to believe.
That 2.0 GDI engine took over the old VW 2.0 in terms of being the most failure prone DI design that's found in several models across Kia & Hyundai's lineup. Do not buy.

All rust the same here, actually Toyotas might rust faster. I don't see many Toyotas outside of the current generation of vehicles, except the Rav 4 which has some examples of the previous gen running around. Engine and transmission longevity mean nothing if the cancer eats everything around them. Finding an older Tundra, 4runner, Tacoma etc is like finding a needle in a haystack. The exception being the FJ cruiser which despite being out of production seem to be everywhere. So here where they coat the road, and your car in salt brine you are better off with a cheaper car than a Toyota because no matter what it's going to die in about 10-20 years. Gene, I bought 2 new Mavs at msrp. A hybrid in HB and an AWD I keep in Park City. I show these in videos on my channel. I also have some price search videos showing low mile Mavs at close to msrp. Ask any questions.
I would buy the Toyota Cross and Mazda CX30. Even if the Hyundai, KIA, Honda or Mitsubishi were half the price, I wouldn’t touch it. Reliability should be the priority not pricing when it comes to complex AWD.
Here in Canada, Alberta, there occasionally are a few on the lots for sale. No hybrids, but XLTs and Lariats. The Tremor model will be hard to get unless you order one. If you order then it’s 3-4 months last I checked. I’m not TFL staff by the way. Just have a friend with a Ford dealership. He doesn’t have any coming that are unspoken for, but has a LOT ordered. Here in this area of Alberta, they are selling faster than they can be stocked.
I think that largely depends, my local Ford dealer will never charge more than MSRP, so they are showing up more and more on the road, but to pull one off the lot is impossible. I've only ever seen two on their lot, one in the new car space (which I was able to walk around and get a feel for its size, and to me it's perfect) and one on their used lot as I drove by one day. The one I walked around was already sold or I would have asked for a drive, to give you an idea.
@@AHungryHunky - nice to have a Ford dealership in the USA that doesn’t add market price adjustments.I know they are out there, but it seems there’s still a lot of greedy dealers. Here in Alberta Canada, the majority of the Ford dealers do not charge market price adjustments. There’s one in Edmonton, Alberta though that is a SVT approved dealership that has several Raptors and even a couple of RaptorRs. The Raptors are marked up by $25,000, the RaptorR is marked up $50,000 (Canadian dollars), they even have a Mustang GT500 and IT’s marked up $25,000 as well!! Freedom Ford in Edmonton. They used to mark up almost everything, but some of their prices appear to be MSRP now. Personally I think Ford should strip the dealership’s SVT approval and redistribute the Raptors and SVT vehicles they have & they were supposed to get, and ban the sale of SVT products from them!! I know the dealership I use would not charge more than MSRP and a $549 cad processing fee. You can likely negotiate the fee. For regular pickups, they negotiate more than that!! Especially now that Ram is offering the huge discounts like they used to. 15% - 20% off 1500 Classics. 10% off of the “new” Ram 1500s and even $2500 - $5000 off the HD models!! They can’t deal that far as those are manufacturer incentives, not the dealerships, but they will deal! Ram is trying to get to a true #2 status over Chevy & GM it appears. They were hugely overpriced anyways. The tide is changing here in Canada, hopefully it gets better for all of you in the USA as well!!
Does FIAT not sell the 500x anymore? I know those came with AWD? Also is the eclipse cross The only SUV son this list where you can actually select AWD?
Fiat does indeed still sells the 500x $27,965 starting price for the Pop model !!! Even the Jeep Renegade is standard AWD now and starts at $30,490 for the Latitude Model.
Actually, there are sites that keep track of where Subarus are most popular. I See Cars is one of them. Here is what they say, 1. Vermont 2. Maine 3. New Hampshire 4. Connecticut 5. Colorado. I love the Kia Seltos.
The Mavericks can't be found at that price point although it is nice to imagine you could go to your local dealer and actually buy one off the lot at that awesome price. The Trailblazer I find interesting but even the used ones in my area are going for about $27,000 if you want AWD. New are of course more expensive.
Yes Mavericks on the lot have a $10-15k ADM. Order a 2024MY this fall from a dealer that charges msrp they are out there. That is how I bought 2 that I show in videos on my channel.
Another thing to mention even know Hyundai is selling for regular prices Hardly any manufacture right now has these models I know my local dealer has not had a corner under 27 $28,000 for months. And this goes for everything these using the chips on higher trims.
The cheapest vehicles on this list are definitely the best values, and not just because they are the cheapest. They're also better equipped than some of the more expensive models on the list. The Maverick and Corolla Cross are the worst equipped and priced in the mid-to the upper half. The Outlander Sport, though old-school, has a nice lifted driving height and excellent ground clearance at 8.5", beating some of the others, and has a fantastic reliability track record. It's the reliable value bargain here. The Seltos is more modern, but reliability doesn't hold a candle.
For me it's a choice between the Impreza hatch or Forester. Impreza is the best value and probably fits my needs. The problem with things the Corolla Cross is once you add AWD the price gets too close to the Forester which is much more car (this is true for the Crosstrek too). Plus it's likely to be an inferior AWD to any Subaru.
With the current new car prices and wait times.. it's become increasingly difficult to own anything new and reliable. I'm now considering buying a used 2008-2012 RAV4, similar to the current gen Corolla Cross Hybrid in power and size. Would love to see some old classics on the slip test, like the RAV4 to see how these old bargains do on the slip test and compare to a similar new car.
I realize these are all new cars - but if you are willing to go with slightly used (or even more heavily used), you can take advantage of high depreciation of new cars to get a lot of car for the same $$$. My 2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS has AWD and is still a lot of car today. At $17K, it was less expensive than every car on the list. Seems to me that if you go for something a bit newer, you should be able to get an AWD car that was originally $30-50K for a price that beats anything on the list, and is still new enough to include several high end features. Just find the sweet spot that works for you.
Used Q50 AWD. 3-4 years old anywhere from about $20-30k. A lot quicker than probably all cars on the list, decent looks and you can find one with some warranty remaining fairly low mileage. Also a usable back seat.
My little sister just paid well under MSRP for a 2023 Mazda CX30 Turbo and she got $500+ of free accessories too. I paid $4,000 off sticker for a left over 2022 Miata. I think you need to find a better dealer. The lots are filling up. It's not a sellers market for most models any more.
Just bought a 2023 impreza base 5 speed for $19k so thats why subaru, they are the go to for cheap awd, and as a bonus you get the boxer engine, low center of gravity, 5 speed manual, none of the other vehicles listed here are interesting to me or offer similar options, its why i bought what i bought i wanted a subaru, $24k for kia is just sounds wrong lol and thats the cheapest one on this list, i wouldn't ever consider buying a kia, but i also dont like cross overs, and i dont like "tech" in my car, so ya this list would not work for me because i will go subaru every time
🤔I find your cost limit to be odd(and a bit arbitrary). IMO, under 30k qualifies as "cheap" now days. Admittedly, I made my purchase in 2020 and the landscape has changed a bit, but the only viable options I found were either Subaru or the Mazda 3 AWD. In 2020, I purchased my Mazda 3 hatchback AWD premium for 29,950. The deciding factor for me is always going to be the manufacturers who appear in the top 10 of consumer reports most reliable list. Starting that year Mazda claimed the number two spot bumping Toyota down to number 3. I really wanted a Corolla, but at that time they were not offering AWD. I'm glad at least three of the cars you mentioned, made the reliability cut, but for anyone who has a couple more grand to spend, the Mazda 3 should have made this list as well. After 2 years of ownership, I am extraordinarily happy with the car. Just something to consider, but maybe you guys who have the responsibility of giving advice to those who aren't really necessarily into cars, should factor reliability in. Your preferred choices, with the exception of the Corolla have very not good track records for long-term cost of ownership and reliability. You're doing a disservice to people who are putting their trust in you.
I can't help but to look at the Maverick's off-center license plate in the back and be bothered by it. Anyone else? Ford needs to figure that out better with the hitch.
I own 2 Mavericks I show in videos on my channel. I actually like how the lic plate is different than other vehicles. I also like the electronic hockey puck shifter and the switch blade key you have to insert into the ignition. No more searching for the key fob that fell between the seats while driving.
The Chevy Trax AWD was cheaper than the Trailblazer. My 2021 Trax AWD was $22,900 and I believe the 2022s were around the same price. Unfortunately, the redesigned 2024 Trax will not offer AWD.
Lol they said it literally in the first min of two of the vid… there are a shit ton of Subarus where they live, so they gave options that are different.
@@cola6309 To me that is not an answer.
They are getting a little easier. Bunch of ford dealers have been calling me recently since I put in an interest inquiry
Does FIAT not sell the 500x anymore? I know those came with AWD? Also is the eclipse cross
The only SUV son this list where you can actually select AWD?
Fiat does indeed still sells the 500x $27,965 starting price for the Pop model !!! Even the Jeep Renegade is standard AWD now and starts at $30,490 for the Latitude Model.
Subaru Probably Watched This Video And Was Like “Damn TF Did We Do????”🤣🤣🤣
I don’t consider the compact SUVs to be sedans. I’d like to see your list of sedans that are all-wheel-drive like the Ultima, the Optima, etc..
Actually, there are sites that keep track of where Subarus are most popular. I See Cars is one of them. Here is what they say, 1. Vermont 2. Maine 3. New Hampshire 4. Connecticut 5. Colorado. I love the Kia Seltos.
Need affordable frame on body true SUVs, everything is a crossover now usually with multiple variants of same chassis.
I totally forgot that Mitsubishi was still a company 😂
Aren't the Hyundai and Kia getting blackballed by insurers due to the ease of stealing them using a USB cable? Seems to make them less affordable.
Only those that doesn't have the push button start system is blackballed.
The Mavericks can't be found at that price point although it is nice to imagine you could go to your local dealer and actually buy one off the lot at that awesome price. The Trailblazer I find interesting but even the used ones in my area are going for about $27,000 if you want AWD. New are of course more expensive.
What is a price "point"?
@@broeheemed32 The one in the video...
Yes Mavericks on the lot have a $10-15k ADM. Order a 2024MY this fall from a dealer that charges msrp they are out there. That is how I bought 2 that I show in videos on my channel.
Just chop the rear of the roof off any amoeba-shaped SUV and you'll have the same thing.
Altima s awd was really cheap but now I think it starts at the sv trim awd for 27.5k but I'm not sure that's with destination
Well done, some people really buy vehicles for only transportation!
Another thing to mention even know Hyundai is selling for regular prices Hardly any manufacture right now has these models I know my local dealer has not had a corner under 27 $28,000 for months. And this goes for everything these using the chips on higher trims.
What about the AWD Nissan Altima
I actually test drove the trailblazer this was a great one ..able to get for like 24$$
I still love my reliable base model 2016 Subaru Forester with manual transmission. Nothing more and nothing less than I need.❤
My Kona 1.6 turbo 4x4 DCT is a great small car!
I live in Denver and drive a Subaru. 😃
The maverick should be higher since it’s has utility of truck bed .the trail blazer looks awful in my opinion
HRV realistically isn’t on list now, neither Corolla cross etc, still huge markups and waiting lists
I thought kia seltos has a gearbox overheating problem.
The '24 (refresh) Seltos & (new) Kona have a standard 8 speed auto for the turbo models, but the base engine is still paired with a CVT.
I would go maverick as well, do anything bring anything cheap vehicle.
If you can find one.
@@anajay78 - can always order one.
Yes, order a 2024MY this fall from a dealer that charges msrp they are out there. That is how I bought 2 Mavs that I show in videos on my channel.
I’m surprised the RAV4 wasn’t on this list
Still waiting for the Toyota CC hybrid
I love my mazda cx30
With the current new car prices and wait times.. it's become increasingly difficult to own anything new and reliable. I'm now considering buying a used 2008-2012 RAV4, similar to the current gen Corolla Cross Hybrid in power and size. Would love to see some old classics on the slip test, like the RAV4 to see how these old bargains do on the slip test and compare to a similar new car.
Top 10 "cheap" cars according to rich people who think 27k is cheap...
Exactly. What world do these people live in?
Hard to beat Subaru. Too bad they don't have more hybrid models. Also, not a fan of their CVT.
The front end has a very AP1 S2000 vibes
Forgot about the Santa Cruz... SMH.
Wow Case picked a terrible korean branded car?
Hybrid Maverick AWD would be perfect
26k for a Ford maverick is unseen right now
Hyundai and Kia should flip the names Kia Kona sounds way snappier than Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos.
you might want to look at Dacia Duster.
All of these have massive market adjustments... $2000 - $10000. They are not affordable NOW!
HRV's are going for low $30k now... Mavericks are about the same..
Just bought a 2023 impreza base 5 speed for $19k so thats why subaru, they are the go to for cheap awd, and as a bonus you get the boxer engine, low center of gravity, 5 speed manual, none of the other vehicles listed here are interesting to me or offer similar options, its why i bought what i bought i wanted a subaru, $24k for kia is just sounds wrong lol and thats the cheapest one on this list, i wouldn't ever consider buying a kia, but i also dont like cross overs, and i dont like "tech" in my car, so ya this list would not work for me because i will go subaru every time
Best bargain AWD is Honda Accord Crosstour
Unfortunately they stopped making those.
I got the HRV 2023 . Worst financial decision ever made
🤔I find your cost limit to be odd(and a bit arbitrary).
It’s one of the most practical vehicles on the road, but it’s ugly as sin unless you really pay up for a Lariat or Tremor
Cr-v sucks without ivtm-4! And Subarus are affordable, so you should’ve included them.
Not a lot of options, I want a standard transmission !!!
Only one car on this list, lots of suv options tho
maverick for 24,000 lol good luck that dealer mark up is BS
eclipse is a target for all catalytic converter stealers
These aren’t cars they’re SUVs and Crossovers why didn’t you mention any AWD Sedans?
I'd be curious as to where the Subaru offerings would stand on this list. I guess I don't understand why you would leave them out.
Lol they said it literally in the first min of two of the vid… there are a shit ton of Subarus where they live, so they gave options that are different.
@@cola6309 To me that is not an answer. I know that Roman has a pet peeve about Subaru not loaning them vehicles., If there is a Subie that fits in the "cheap AWD" category that is better then the others in the list than it should be included. I like their channels and almost all of their videos. This video is just plain dumb.
@@cola6309 ...but it *is* the answer. The whole concept of the video is that the masses view Subaru as the go-to, when there are plenty of other options.
Corolla sedan for me
You cant get a maverick in real life for that price.
Oh please the maverick even worse. Huge markups no stock!
I wouldn't buy the CRV with the 1.5L turbo.
Subaru's AWD have been over rated since they started putting CVT's in their vehicles, can't even put down full force without it cutting out power anymore.
Bro what’s good with your hair lol?
Take that, Subaru! 😁
Now that I think about it, where is Nathan? Did I miss an episode?
