    Turns out some of you where right, I was using a stick that was too big. I had a 27" paddle but in this game I try out a 26" composite. How do you choose which size paddle to get?

      The Puck Stops Here, I’m only a teen but we’re taught to create a 90 degree angle on our blocker side elbow, to do that in our stance we lift our stick off the ice, expoing more of the five hole, however when we drop in our butterfly our stick has more freedom to direct pucks to the corner. Look it up for clarification Cause I feel u won’t understand what I just said.

    • @ThePuckStopsHere

      I think I do understand. But then having a smaller stick helps right?

    • @goaliezads3219
      @goaliezads3219 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ThePuckStopsHere your 27 was way to big yes. with your 26 it should allow to create that 90 degree bend, your 27 made your blocker in a position where your stick was always touching the ice limiting your blocker movement, your still used to your 27 so that backhand goal in the video is just from you not practicing enough with it. try creating that bend, it will give you the same amount of movement that your glove does.

    • @goaliezads3219

    This came back up in my feed today, and I wanted to share something that’s come up for me recently. Warrior quit making the sticks that I’ve been using. They still make the Bishop Mid-Curve pattern but they changed the model from the CR-1 to their new model and they changed some things about the stick. I’m a little meh about the new model in comparison, but will likely tinker with it when it’s time to buy new sticks. But the thing that it brought up for me is this, sometimes you have no choice but to change manufacturers or models because they phase things out. Different manufacturers mean different things particularly in terms of paddle length. For example, a 25” Warrior is the same as a 25” Bauer, or a 24” CCM. I made the mistake of getting a 25” CCM without comparing them and it’s too big for me.

    • @ThePuckStopsHere
      @ThePuckStopsHere  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a very valid point and I think it is smart to double check the size when buying. I always hate when a brand stops selling the one thing you like. But change is always good and teaches us to adapt. Hopefully you were able to return the new stick so you can get one the right size.

    5:42 I think you were too anxious with the puck, just try to stay calm (helps if you handle the puck a lot in practice) and look for your options, you usually have more time than you think. There was a guy open on the right, what I usually do in situations like this myself is start the pass like I was going to pass it another way (body and head towards that direction) and then kinda turn to pass the other way (not like a full out fake but more of a turn in the middle of the pass). Also in longer passes like that I usually sauce it, so it moves faster and is harder for possible opponents to catch. Hope this helps

    Stick sizing is often a VERY personal thing and lots of things get involved. Two VERY differently sized goalies may use the same sized stick, or two goalies that are the same size may use very different sticks. Also measurements are not always consistent between manufacturers. There are a couple of things that are pretty consistently true though. A shorter paddle translates to a deeper stance. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends on a lot of factors. Also, if the tape on your stick is wearing at the heal, the stick is a) too long for how you stand, or b) you’re carrying it too close to your body. If the tape is wearing at the toe, the inverse is true. If it’s wearing in the middle or uniformly across its length then you’ve found the right balance.
    Another thing to consider is the shape of the blade which includes curve, openness, and heel shape. A flatter curve means more blade contact with the ice which may (or may not) translate into more stopped pucks. A deeper curve generally translates into more oomph when shooting the puck, but that raises the question how often do I shoot the puck vs how often am I stopping the puck? Openness refers to where and how the blade flares back as it moves out to the toe. More openness means it flares back more. Heel shape is generally either rounded or squared and really is totally a matter of personal feel. I find that a rounded heel is marginally easier to transition to and from paddle down but it’s also possible it’s just my perception.
    That’s the thing, there are no absolute rules for sizing or picking a stick, it’s a matter of feel and understanding what the stick is telling you as you play. I try out different things and different patterns and shapes. I do tend to stick to a 25” paddle (I’m 5’10” tall if that helps in any way) but other than that I try out different things. That said, I pretty much keep going back to my Warrior CR-1’s in a 25” paddle in the Bishop Mid-Curve pattern.
    Just the rambling musings of a goalie who’d rather be on the ice than at his desk working.
    Cheers.

    • @ThePuckStopsHere
      @ThePuckStopsHere  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great detailed breakdown of what your stick can tell you about whether or not it is the right fit. Thank you for taking the time to share this. I hope everyone who watches the video reads this comment.
      And I agree 100% with you. At the end of the day, it’s all about comfort. If you like a bigger stick and feel good playing with it, great! If you like a smaller stick, then that’s good too. There is not formula to this only rough guidelines that help.
      I think I’m really liking the 26” considering I’m 6,0’ and I don’t think I’ll be going back to a 27”

    • @jasontryon8621
      @jasontryon8621 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another thought occurred to me. When you try out something new, be prepared for it to not actually be an improvement the first time out. Give it a try or two maybe three before you abandon it. Practice, and pick-up are great times to try out new things and see how they go.
      Cheers, and always remember to move to the puck.

    there is somethings i notice when you are playing. I know you are in a mens league but if you want to help your game try leading with your head then your hands and it will get you to the puck quicker. its called having active hands. I use a 27" paddle it doesn't sit directly in my five hole but the bigger paddle gives me a nice seal standing up and in my butterfly and also I could cut the paddle size down however I like my blocker to be higher in my stance so I like the larger paddle rather than some goalies have there blocker overlapping the pad covering no net

    • @ThePuckStopsHere
      @ThePuckStopsHere  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the end of the day, it is about what is most comfortable. If you notice in the comparision between me standing up with both different sticks, you will see that I do not overlap my pad with my blocker but my stick is actually in a better place then when I used the 27" paddle. I didn't realize how much bigger the gaps were until I looked at the images. So for me, I made the switch because I felt like it could improve my game because of the smaller if any gaps.
      So many pucks use to squeeze by between my blocker arm, and now I feel more confident that they wont. I have't had one yet.

      Yeah, I grew up watching Hasek and all the goalies who played before the butterfly became the go to . And regarding the stick, I agree, what ever somone is most comfortable with they should use, I just couldn't believe how big the holes were when I used the 27" paddle.

      @@ThePuckStopsHeresame. I picked my sticks on there stick handling. I use to skate in the horse shoe if we had two goalies. Or I was training in other levels just to get ice time.
      I was trained to react to the shoot not before. So opening up a hole up top wasn't a issue. But goaltending was so different. You didn't just block and slide around. You come right out and trail back in. I didn't play for ten years and just jumped on for a scrimmage. And it blow people's minds. Shooters are not use to the old school goalies playing out of there crescent. Playing at lose pucks. saucer passing. So on.

    There is never really a wrong paddle size, it all comes to stance and prefered blocker position

    • @ThePuckStopsHere
      @ThePuckStopsHere  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m going to have to disagree. When I had the 27” paddle, it forced my Blocker to be out of position when I was in the butterfly. On top of the hole between my arm and body, my stick was to far in front of my and I actually had a puck go off my stick and over my shoulder and in.
      With the smaller paddle I now have a much smaller gap between my arm and body and when I go down, the blade is at better angle to direct the puck into me rather then over me.
      For me, and this is only my opinion, I’ve noticed a difference between the 2 sticks even though it was only an inch difference between the 2. I’m even tempted to try a smaller paddle to see if I have even more control.

      The Puck Stops Here I agree, i think having a too small stick is better than too big. My desired size is a 25 but i can use a 27 without any big problems, i use the hellebuyck stance and i have a really wide butterfly and i kinda like having a big stick sometimes but i totally get what you mean with deflections and stuff like that.

    Always keep your hands up is not good advice. Yeah you dropped your glove and they put it upstairs. But had you kept your glove high and the put it above the pad below the glove would you contradict your original advice? Stay square and read the players blade while shooting is better advice imo.

    • @ThePuckStopsHere
      @ThePuckStopsHere  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great point. I think what I meant to say is keep your gloves at the same height when you are standing to when you are going down and react as you drop. This way you don’t default to a blocking position like I tend to do. It’s better to be reactive.

    • @scottwallace33
      @scottwallace33 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePuckStopsHere I don't mean to critique. You're a decent goalie for sure. The only thing i notice is you analyze every goal you let in and say what you could have done. Sometimes we just get beat. And in that example your correction would have stoped that particular shot, but may not stop the next shot. Imo if young kids are watching your channel they might get confused on a keep the glove high (in this scenario) or keep the glove low (if you get beat right over the pad)

    • @ThePuckStopsHere
      @ThePuckStopsHere  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t buy into the hype... I used a 27” paddle ever since I can remember.... I’ve recently switched to a 26” and I’ve noticed some great improvements especially with the gap between my right arm and body. Because I hope the stick lower, when I go down, my arm is tighter against my body and I’m still covering my five hole nicely.
      Also, in a recent game, because my stick was so long, I went down to stop it and the puck went up my blade and over my shoulder into the net.
      At the end of the day though, it is what ever someone feels most comfortable with. I like my new smaller stick but others may prefer a bigger one.
      It’s all subjective and each goalie is different. I’m just sharing my thoughts on what I have noticed from making the switch to a smaller stick.
