- What is the best tyre size for a Nissan Y62 patrol? Spoiler alert…. 295/70r18
My journey with tyres for my y62 patrol has been a bit of a ride and we have now tried 4 different sizes.
Factory OE 265/70r18 - 33” equivalent.
295/70r18 - 34.5” equivalent.
35x12.5r18 - 35” actual.
Most recently 275/70r18 - 33.5” equivalent.
All of these different size tyres have pros and cons to them and of course the “best tyre size” is relevant to what you are actually doing with your y62 patrol.
For me I use my y62 patrol as my daily driver, I like to do a lot of 4wding, exploring and camping. Also I only very rarely tow anything.
The 265/70r18 factory tyres. These are the best option for fuel economy. They are quite and more of a highway terrain tyre even though they are marked as an All-terrain tyre. All the Nissan engineering for the y62 is around running this size tyre. However they look small under such a big 4wd.
The 275/70r18. We got this size in a Maxxis RAZR AT811 all-terrain. They are slightly larger than an OE tyre, have a decent increase in tread width over stock. Still quite on road, offer better traction and are just a better looking 4wd tyre over OE. This size is still definitely on the small side for a y62 Patrol.
The 295/70r18, we got these in a Kumho MT71 mud terrain tyre. These are a decent increase in both overall diameter (height) and trad width compared with OE tyre size. They look in proportion to the size of the y62. The increase the ground clearance around 1”. Offer much better capability offroad being able to roll over obstacles better being taller and offer better traction being wider. Also the wider footprint also helps off road. They do use more fuel (around 2L per 100km) and there is some power loss being bigger and heavier.
The 35x12.5r18, we got these in a Yokohama G003 mud terrain. These are a significant increase in both overall diameter (height) and trad width compared with OE tyre size. They look in big to the size of the y62 but still in proportion and sit well. The increase the ground clearance 1” if not slightly over. Offer much better capability offroad with a significantly wider footprint over OE tyres. Again being able to roll over obstacles better being taller and offer better traction being wider. They do use more fuel (around 3L per 100km) and there is power loss being bigger and heavier.
It is important to note that power loss on a Nisan y62 Patrol isn’t really an issue with its big power and torque v8. However it is still slightly noticeable.
Why is 295/70r18 the best tyre size for a y62 Patrol?
It offers the best of all worlds when it comes to 4wd tyre performance and noticeable size increase, being only marginally smaller than a true 35x12.5r18. With relatively reasonable minimal power loss and fuel consumption increase. The 295/70r18 is the best all round tyre size for a Nissan y62 Patrol. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Well, that is a bit comforting. I've ordered some 295/70 r18 MT Baja Boss tyres on 18 offset rims after doing a bit of 'theory' research but have not had the benefit of discussing real world experience with anyone. Great vid, thanks!

That’s a good run down mate but u needed a 20” in the mix. I’m running the 305/55/20’s nitto’s on ODIN62 which I think I have a 20 offset. My next set I’ll be going to a 35 definitely as I should have lifted the bloody thing by then 😂😂. Keep up the great work mate 🍻

I have been using Yokohama X-AT Geolander 16s in 295/70 spec for the last year. Cannot fault them.
Previously used Toyo and loved them also.
The yokos in x-at is the other 295 I’m considering for my next set. They look good
@@HappyGoTravel won't ever go as far as a true Muddy...but I've used them at Gordon Country on semi rough tracks (admittedly dry) and were 100%.

I have been thinking about this myself.
I have been considering a 305 65 series as it's a smaller diameter but wider tread.
Problem is that it's not a common tyre.
It would be the best of both worlds as far as economy and grip for offroading.

I’ve driven 4wds most of my life and I use my 4wd HEAVILY - full off road and even doing recovery for off-road racing events. Aggressive A/T tyres have proven to be superior both on and off road as the most effective and efficient tyre. I’ve even narrowed it down to the Maxxis and Kumho tyres to be a little better than other brands. If you want further proof, I’ve had owners of 4wd workshops and off-road racing teams follow my experimentations and come to the same conclusion, so much so that they changed their choice of tyres.
I am thinking when I go back to 295’s I’ll m going to stick with ATs. I’m really liking them.
Nice comparison mate. Just bought a 62 and trying to decide which is the best off-road and towing all round size.
great vid mate, i recently took my MT71's off and put the stockers on as i had a few highway trips coming up and i was getting a bit sick of hearing them :) but i agree with your economy numbers, 16.49/100 was consistantly what i calculated, i'll leave the stockers on now unless i plan an off road day then i'll put the MT71's back on, when i wear out the stockers i'll probably look at getting some yoko's in 295/70 if i can..

@@HappyGoTravel just did 1000ks with the stockers on, 13.8/100 calculated at the pump, using 95....only things not stock are fabwitz snorkel and pacemaker cat back with rear muffler..... such a comfy ride though :)

Doing 90% road and weekends on dirt and sand. I’ve heard the narrower tyres are better for sand as though get more length easier with a higher psi. Any opinion on this as well?
I’m currently running the 295/70/18 Maxxas Razors AT’s on a +20 offset and I find them to be a perfect fit. Also they are legal unlike a true 35
I’m definitely convinced that the 295/70r18 is the best all round size for these. In NSW you can legally go 7% increase in tyre size that’s why OD is important. But it’s all relevant to where you live. In saying that 35x12.5 don’t look out of place on a y62 so it is unlikely that HWP will even look twice at you. My best mate had 35x12.5r16 on a np300 and HWP kept smashing him 🤣
Mate, just want ask if no rubbing underneath the 295/70/18 AT? Im running with the stock suspension and no bar in front.

I went 295/70 r18 Yokohama x-at. Very impressed with them. Ride very nice, very little noise.
The X-at is what I’m contemplating when I go back to 295s
Hi. Amazing video. Do the 295s/70/R18s need any lifting on the standard car so they fit? Also, does the tyre touch when they are fully turned? Any impact on HD brakes?
Thanks mate✌️. Shot answer is they’ll fit. Depending on wheel off set you may need to remove the front mud flaps. As for brakes as long as you get the right wheels they will clear the callipers. You can also fit 35x12.5 relatively easily also.
Long answer is Lift actually doesn’t make big tyres fit because the suspension still goes through the full range of up and down travel. It’s all about the clearance. Luckily these things have plenty of it and it’s easy to create more if you need it. There is heaps of room behind the inner guards.
Hi good vid, I'm about to buy some 295/70/18 and put them on the standard rims. Do you know if they will scrub at all with NO lift?
They fit fine on standard suspension and wheels, there are plenty of people running around with them
Did you run all the 295/70/18's on standard rims, no spacers etc? Or is that just a spare in your video? I dont really want to change rims, I like the look of them.....but would like to have a 295/70. Cheers.

Hey mate, i can get it in inflated but it’s definitely easier on 10 psi, it all depends on what tow bar you have. With no tow bar it fits no issues at all with a tow bar it gets a little tight
@@HappyGoTravel I've got the Yokohama 295/70 ATs and with a Hayman Reece tow bar fitted by ARB the spare is not even close to fitting under the rear, even deflated. The OD is about 30mm bigger than the space under there.
@@nd9667 my guess is your towbar is closer to the rear diff than my raslarr bar is. I always tilt the towbar side up when winding it up under there and it jams in nicely
Excellent video mate, I am currently running 285/70/18 nittos and for me it’s the ideal balance between off-roading and road use/towing. The spare fits under the back snugly which is a bonus. It’s just a shame more companies don’t supply tyres in this size as the nittos probably wouldn’t be my preferred choice.
I have 295/70R18 dick cepak extreme country with Nissan towbar and I just some soapy water and a deflated tyre 😊but I am not that strong 😂
Have you actually checked odometer for accuracy?
Will the 295/70/r18 fit on a stock 2022 TIL? And the best offset wheel that will sit flush with the guards ?
Yeah, the 295/70r18 is the best size in my opinion. +30 will have it pretty much with the guards maybe just a little in. And +18 will have it right on the edge with a little side wall poke. Depending on what tyres you choose of course. ATs generally have less aggressive sidewalls and sit a little more in

@@Chris-sf2cp depending on what tow bar you have. None it fits with heaps of room. With my raslarr rear it just fits. I think the factory bar sits a little further in so I can’t be sure

Every inch over standard Double s the strain on every part of your drive line it's why engineering isn't a TAFE course

@@mdbacolod fitting suspension tyres exhaust etc. Work with smart fellows race tunning old Holden's for race track. The best results 6 inch rims the wider one inch over standard cars are designed and built by engineering. The best it will handle is as close to specs as possible have a good look at a modern 4x4 wheel it's basically a truck tyre held on with undersized bolts so to have big wheels it hurts everything
does the 35's hurt the transmission or anything like that?
Short answer is nothing you will be affected by immediately. But being a much bigger and heavier tyre it will affect component wear over time. In saying that there are heaps of y62s running around on 35’s that have had no problems

I have my Y62 on the way with stock 20 inch wheels, the tires are 275/60 r20. What is the biggest tire I can put with stock height?
You can fit up to a 35” equivalent with little to no modifications. My opinion is 34-34.5 is the best size regardless of lift
