I was always annoyed at people telling me to "look as far ahead as possible" because in all honestly, that isn't the right phrase of words, and makes no sense in the context of any real life scenario. I'm not going to be staring at one point of the track the entire time 20 seconds down the course, that's ridiculous. What you explained feels more natural and makes sense to me, its what I would have guesses I was supposed to be doing when first told to look ahead. Lemme make sure I have this right: you make sure you take note of everything coming up on the track, but you focus on where you want the car to go next (like 1-2 steps ahead of where you currently are), because the car will follow your eyes.
