I worked at bath and Bodyworks for many years and I had to deal with a lot of theft. The reason most employees don’t do anything and let them walk out of the store is because the company won’t allow you to. We’re encouraged to give them customer service and hope for the best. At bath and body works, we weren’t even allowed to call mall security into our store to stop them. And if you tried to stop them yourself and things escalate, your butt is on the chopping block. The company won’t protect you or reward you for trying to stop a theft, instead you’ll be fired. The thieves knew that we couldn’t do anything and they would just come back and many times, they would bring friends with them. At times, they would call customer service and say they were being discriminated against and the company would reward them with gift cards. (I hope you guys never experience the annoyance and the DISRESPECT of catching someone stealing RED-HANDED in a store, and have them accuse you of racially profiling them, WHEN YOU SHARE THE SAME SKIN COLOR AS THEM!!! AND to watch them be rewarded with gift cards) So either way, your hands were tied as an employee. It became easier to just let them take the stuff and leave. If the company is not stressing over the thieves and their merchandise, why should I?

I know they have to report this to the insurance company and I would hope the insurance company would not compensate them as they allowed it to happen. To me the store is complicit in allowing the theft to take place. It just doesn't make sense.

You don't think stores pay insurance for this? You are a fool if you don't think so. The store gets paid twice. Once from the insurance, this is why there's inventory days. And then by the thief when they get caught. Some stores charge 10x the price of the items stolen when the thief gets caught. Community suffers because of the way most raise their children.....

I was at Walmart three days ago and I saw a family of Norwegian immigrants just walk out with grocery items. Employees watched them go and no one lifted a finger.
I paid for my merchandise like a fool. I could've just gone full Norwegian and walked out--but oops, I don't look Norwegian so they'd have called the cops on me.

What surprises me is, that security didn't track them down in the parking lot ,and deliver some needed instant justice.
Years ago, at a store in my hometown, an employee chased two shoplifters who ran behind the store. They had friends back there, and the employee was beaten pretty badly.
After that, the store had a no pursuit policy.

if you let them check your bags/receipt at Walmart, that's you giving your permission to them which you don't legally have to do. If they suspect you of stealing, tell them to prove it. Don't provide your receipt because it's your property.
I watched a woman that walked into Wal Mart at the same time I did, empty handed, but she kept looking all around like she stole something. As I was leaving, the same woman made a scene at the register as if she couldn't use a form of payment. She had no bags or anything still. So I watched this woman walk over to a closed isle, pick up a bike, a full book bag, and a full purse bag,. She kept looking around like something was wrong. Got to the exit and the door guy looked passed her but stopped me to check my receipt. Shawty hopped on the bike with tags and all still on, rode the bike to where she thought she couldn't be seen, and removed all the labels, and just rode off. So now when I get stopped for bag check, I give the door folks a hassle. Oh and you couldn't see her face because the so cal COVID mask that covered everything but her eyes.

The stores executives refusing store employees the right to call security or the police is ludicrous and illustrates their leverage over employees and the legal system as their reputation is at stake. The very fact that Kohl's has no security in the store, doesn't protect their employees, and refuses to acknowledge criminal activity should alarm the public to avoid the Kohl's franchise because they could robbed and nothing will be done for the victims. Every single night we have thieves coming in and stealing $100+ in groceries at Kroger and there is nothing done to stop it. We just let it happen and they keep doing it. The store can hire security but refuses despite having loads of money and losing loads of money by these thieves each night. They know nothing gets done either so it keeps happening. .

Yep, same here. Where I live, everything is locked up. I went to get Shampoo the other day from CVS, I usually order online, but ran out and needed some. I go into the store, almost everything is locked up, they even got the Red Bull locked up now. -I have to walk around the store and find someone that works there so I can get them to unlock the shelf, just to get things like; Tide, Dove Soap, Shampoo, Tooth Paste, Aveeno, and other products. It's sickening.
When I read stories like this, I am so happy I live in Kentucky, we have nothing in cases, no need to ask for something to be unlocked, and I wouldn't advise it but even if you left your door unlocked, the chances are low that anyone would enter your home, but again I don't advise doing that, I've accidentally done it and it scares me
