    I've watched this video multiple times over past few years. It takes me back to the 60s. My Dad bought this same 80 hp Merc in 61'. Had a new 16 ft aluminum runabout that my brothers and sister skied off of. Lot of awesome memories.

    Georgous Scenery 👍👍 Back in the mid 1960s my dad had a 25ft Owens Cabin Cruiser on lake Michigan. A brand new speedboat was flying along with a Merc1000 we pulled up next to him & my dad yelled Are you all out! The guy pushed his throttle down & yelled back Yea I'm all out, my dad told us Hang on kids then he eased his throttle down wide open & we ran off & left that speed boat a mile behind lol. My dad just laughed He was an aviation mechanic in the Marines so everything had to fly.
    Thanks for sharing💛

      Not sure if it was a mercury 1000 lol it was around 1967 so whatever they had back then my dad said it was the biggest outboard mercury had out at the time. Our Ownens had a bigblock Oldsmobile engine with three 2 barrel carbs my dad rebuit the engine if he revved it up at the dock it would blow water all over the dock ask me how I know lol. Check out his dual carb 55 panhead (Duke) here on my channel sometime he built that engine in the late 1950s.

      Owens made a 14ft flat bottom runabout ( ca. 1960 ) and a friend of ours put a 1000 Merc short shaft on it that absolutely flew ... the original motor was a 78 Merc

    I had a Kiekhaefer Mercury in the 70s and early 80s on a 15ft Redfish. It was battleship grey.
    No neutral, direct drive. For reverse you would pull the throttle lever all the way back towards you which would spin the distributor 180 degrees the you would hit the starter button with you thumb(it was mounted on top of the throttle lever) and it would start in reverse. (The engine would rotate backwards). It worked incredibly well and was fairly dependable. It was nicknamed “The Pier Buster” some people would have trouble starting in reverse so it was a little tough to control in tight spaces.
    It was a really fun time .

    • @peter1708
      @peter1708  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. That engine started off as a 1961 800; we subsequently transplanted a pre-1965 1000 power head. The 800 weighed 247 dry, the 1000 power head version maybe 270? Hull as designed is roughly 550lbs, all told with engine and gear, guessing maybe 1000lbs.

    As I recall it those big motors on small boats were so un balanced and unstable that you wouldn't leave them unattended at the dock for fear of swamping except under perfect conditions.
