I have gone through so many TH-cam videos but never enjoyed any of them as much as this one. Thank you so much for not annoying music and for clear English and of course for amazing ideas. Can't wait to try them.
You can also make an organic pesticide and fungicide using 1 tsp of castile soap and 2 tsp of neem oil, and enough water to fill a 24-32 oz spray bottle. Add all ingredients to the spray bottle, shake well, and spray your plants. It's best to make a fresh batch each time. I used it on my vegetable garden and herb plants spraying tops and undersides of leaves. I sprayed them about once a week.
What a excellent way to use finances on other things & not spending on soaps. I really appreciate the time you took. I have you on my favorites bar. Much thanks Miss Andrea :))
Other youtubes for castile soap call for 1 bar for 1 gallon of water. I made 1 bar to 4 C water as said here and it turned to a solid that was impossible to work with. Had to continue to add water over and over. Such a big difference...Any thoughts?
Brooke, As long as I stir it right away and add enough water it remains liquid. Sometimes I need to shake it but there is no sour smell or going back with the basic castile soap recipe I use. You can add some tea tree oil as a preservative perhaps.
Using 1 bar of castile (using Dr Bronner's, but any castile will do--they say on links) to 1 gallon water. Since there's a huge difference of 4 c water and 1 gallon, wondering how it could be the same product you end up-"liquid castile." 4C version was so thick I could cut it--and barely could get out chunks of thick jelly-like mass. I tried with the gallon of water and it was fine, I used Dr Bronner's, Is yours just more concentrated--then you add water to use for body wash, etc?--thx!
Tea tree oil is an absolute no-no for cats. In fact, most essential oils are a problem for cats as their liver will accumulate them and it can be quite toxic and even deadly for cats. Please add this info to your site and video.
Kathleen Long I agree! And also there are some oils that aren’t safe for dogs too. I know tea tree is one that shouldn’t be diffused around dogs or put on them. 🙁
My vet said no to tea tree oil for the dogs. I would check before adding any of them. Peppermint is deadly to cats, so it is always good to ask before making anything for a pet.
Hello - I just wanted to ask the difference between some processes ive seen online, If you add 4 cups of water to the shavings and melt it it stays liquid? Do you have to be concerned with it going bad if not used immediately? Do you know what is happening (soponification I know but I am just not understanding the difference) between your method and the alternative some use by melting the bar on the stove with 2+ liters of water, letting it sit overnight and it thickens. I've tried this and OMGosh - It was almost a solit gel mass and when I tried to use it it had a texture of a relentless booger, and some of it actually smelled sour after a couple of days. I know.. long comment but I thoroughly enjoyed your simple yet clear presentation. I am hoping you can relay some of this complicated soap stuff in a way that I understand. Thank you so much for your help.
Why wouldn't you use your soft scrub on your granite? What do you use instead? Do you use your castile liquid on your floors, if not what do you use? Thank you for your video, the Best, most comprehensive & time sensitive I've seen.
I don't want to risk scratching it, so I use the castile soap or white vinegar. As for floors I've used the castile soap diluted, or white vinegar diluted.
Andrea Fabry Oh my. Vinegar on granite? Wow. You are crazy, lady. It reacts with granite, etching it. White vinegar on floors? It’s not a cleaning agent.
ladyamba1 It's best in the oven with a little bit of liquid to avoid burning. A double boiler works well on the stove - also with a little liquid such as water or floral hydrosol.
+Andrea Fabry (It Takes Time) I love your take on the liquids added before melting the soap! usually people add just water to the soap but you have expanded the idea so much, endless possibilities, thank you! I am such a fan of this method and now I am excited to try different versions of it.
GREAT INFO! A BAR OF CASTILE IS ABOUT 2 BUCKS WHERE AS A 16 OZ BOTTLE/ 13 TO 15 BUCKS. SHAMPOO I HAVE TRIED AND IT WAS NON FOAMY SO FAMILY DID NOT CARE FOR ,SO,TRYING TO LEARN WHAT TO ADD.
When she was making her "liquid base" at the beginning of her video, she put in about 1 TbL of Glycerin & mentioned that it helped create suds. Maybe experiment with adding 1 tsp of glycerin to you shampoo to see if it suds up more, if still not enough lather, add another teaspoon.
Thank you for the wonderful video! I had no idea about any of this! You can teach an old dog new tricks! But I would like to tell you that your head is crooked on your neck and you need to go to a chiropractor and get your neck and skull adjusted so that you can stand up straight. It's not good for you to have to hold your head crooked all the time. Watch the video and you will see what I mean, you are tipping your head far to the right and that means your neck and skull need to be adjusted. Hope this helps you. Again, thanks for the lesson! You might want to consider whether or not your hairstyle is causing this as it seems you are tipping your head to keep your hair out of your eyes. That's an easy fix with barretts for a healthier stance.
Thank you for this video. I don't know what has happened. My liquid has turned to slime. First I got a block of slimey thickness in a block. Then I added hot water and it is a white slime in amongst an off clear liquid and streaks of white slime. I don't have a clue. Each bar was 70g and it was in a kilner jar. I bought the soap from a supplier and it didn't have the ingredients. It just said castile and the other one said buttermilk. I am scared to try the buttermilk also. Please help. Love your information.
Its snotty textured because different lets are used to make solid and liquid soaps or a combination of lyes to make a cream soap. It's perfectly safe to use just very off-putting.
+stephanisdawn Thanks for the info. I whizzed it up after adding more hot water and it worked. Yes it does have a slight ikey feel. Ive made it plain. How many drops of essential oil can you add to a litre to be within the safe zone.. Any info will be appreciated. You can tell I'm a newby. Made other things , but it's trial and error. Never be afraid to make mistakes.
the amount of oil you can use will vary Vastly from kind to kind and even from manufacture to manufacture as different ones dilute it at different rates...it should mention on the package or the site the dilution rate.... usualy is no more than 5%, but with different kinds can be much lower... I would start with no more than one or two percent... if you wnt to do more, you can experiment with a lesser amount of product and add a higher percent... that way you can dilute down if it don't suit you... I too am still learning, but have spent years now on book learning, but am just really starting to put it to particle use... best of luck there are several soaping groups on face book and one called newbie soaper that is awesome... I would deff suggest joining as many as you can...
FYI A VIDEO I SAW SUGGESTED ADDING 20% ? ABOUT CASTILLE LIQUID STORE BOUGHT TO KEEP THE SOAP FROM GETTING THICK/GOOEY AND IT WORKS SO,WOULD BE NICE TO KNOW WHY/WHAT IS IN IT AND HOW WE CAN DIY AS YOUR WAY IS SO MUCH CHEAPER.
truth freeze Don't quote me on this but I would just give a hint towards your research. The store bought soaps have 2-3 substances for it, propylene glycol, stearic acid and diazonyl urea. That's what keeps the commercial soaps fresh for a longer time and keeps them from getting gooey. Also, they remove the excess glycerine while they saponify oils and diy soaps don't remove the glycerine. FYI Glycerine is a by-product of the oil saponification process.
+Kasey W I've kept mine for many months and had no trouble with it deteriorating. You can add a bit of tea tree oil for an extra preservative if needed.
Ok so I make my own handmade soap and the basis ingredients are Lard, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, & Lye (Sodium Hydroxide). Will I be able to use my bar of soap to create any or all those things you did? My main interest is the shampoo :)
+Kasey W hi, I noticed there was no answer for you here and I just wanted to respond to you...your homemade soap should work just fine for all these recipes.
I appreciated your video. One suggestion: do not use bar soap to make shampoo. The fats in the soap will clog the hair follicles, and you are apt to find your hair thinning. My hubby decided years ago using shampoo was not necessary...and he has lost much of his hair. Other clients of mine have had the same reaction to using bar soap on their head.
Castle soap is one hundred percent olive oil soap... otherwise it is bastile.... and u can't make it using a bar of soap. Is lye, water n olive oil... although i suppose if you melted down a bar of castle soap you could call it castile liquid soap, if you liked, but since a different kind of lye is used for liquid and solid soaps it will most likely be slimy or snotty textured when it cools....
I love hand made home made soaps and shampoos I have hypoallergenic skin and sensitive and product for my skin are rare and extream expensive . Years ago my beautician show me how make my own soaps with oats oils and herbs and I treat so bad case of skin sensitivity that ppl literately turn heads when see me . I use geranium for hyposensitivity of skin ...have natural oils what also are good for astma ......USE growing geranium in room when somebody sleep but not directly next to bed as taking lot of oxygen out of space when is put .....during day next to SUNY window give plenty of smell during night ...it's calming for nervous ppl and animals .

Thanks for sharing. This was inspiring. :-)
GREAT video! :)
How did you melt the soap for the bar soap
With a double boiler.
Hi can you list what ingredients did you used to make for your dog's tick repellant ? Thanks
Hi! I use liquid castile soap, a bit of glycerin and rose geranium essential oil. Rosewood or thyme are also supposed to be effective.
You can also use a muffin tin coated with coconut oil as a mold for the bar soap.
+servant4Him72 Great tip. Thank you.
You're right, Marion. Castile is a generally accepted term, however and more readily understood in terms of natural options.
She did state on video that she wasn't sure about cats because she has a dog. Be merciful, after her going through teaching & educating.
My vet said no to tea tree oil for the dogs.
I would check before adding any of them. Peppermint is deadly to cats, so it is always good to ask before making anything for a pet.
what essential oil brand do you use?
I like Rare Earth or Rocky Mountain Here's Rare Earth: www.rareearthnaturals.com/
Do I have to use the soap you did, or can I use any natural soap?
+Wonda Elizabeth any natural soap will do fine. Some of the dilutions may be a bit different, but with trial and error you'll find what works for you.
You bad honey ,I need you on my team, explain with no problem best viv you rock keep up the good work right to the point, stay blessed.

truth freeze Castille soaps do not create that rich lather. A little bit of castor oil in the original soap recipe helps with foam.

What is the shelf life for your liquid soap products? After you grate your soap then add the hot water, how long will it stay good for?
+Kasey W I've kept mine for many months and had no trouble with it deteriorating. You can add a bit of tea tree oil for an extra preservative if needed.
I had one more question for you, the soap that you use is it made with Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) Or Potassium Hydroxide?
Some of it is potassium hydroxide (liquid soap) and soap bars from sodium hydroxide.
Ok so I make my own handmade soap and the basis ingredients are Lard, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, & Lye (Sodium Hydroxide). Will I be able to use my bar of soap to create any or all those things you did? My main interest is the shampoo :)

Loved the video, thank you so much. When making the castile soap, can you just use any bar of soap like irish spring or something like that?
Irish Spring has quite a few chemicals so I would go with something a little more natural - like Dr. Bronner's.
I love hand made home made soaps and shampoos I have hypoallergenic skin and sensitive and product for my skin are rare and extream expensive . Who randomly ended up here, me i did. But this video is cool :)
I forgot to add the vegetable glycerin while the bar of soap was melting. Can you add the vegetable glycerin after the mixture cools and hardens?
You don't need the glycerin. If you want to add it, you can remelt and then add it.
Great video , Thanks for sharing i am off to the kitchen ....:)
Thanks marylou willhaus !
I'm a 60 year old grumpy old man, but I'm also a thrifty grumpy old man,so where would I find these essential oils that are being used in these products? TY!

TY for the link, it is very much appreciated.
What's the point of adding live bacteria to soap?
+KarasekUS Provided it's good probiotic bacteria, it can help protect our microbial allies that are on our skin.
Andrea Fabry Soap is antibiotic, it kills bacteria. Plus you put it in the oven.
Andrea Fabry The so called good bacteria like in kefir are anaerobic bacteria, they live in the gut and ferment your food, aiding digestion. They don't live on your skin in presence of oxygen.
+KarasekUS I make kombucha soap using a cold press method to protect the probiotic quality. It's possible.
woow
Put when u turn a bar soap into liquid soap you need to use preservatives bc bar soaps are formulated without lots of water ,
Castile soap is 80-100 percent vegetable or olive oil so how can water be added to that bar and have it be Castile soap?
Castike is 100% olive oil... otherwise it is bastile or just liquid soap. Dr Bonners is trying to change the known definition so it can get away with selling Bastille soap, that is cheaper and easier/quicker to make, as Castill and the consumer will be no wiser because probably 95 percent, or more, ofpeople have no clue what the difference is
I can think of a 13th thing to do with a bar of soap.
Don’t forget.
If your using kitchen appliances or utensils for soap making then you can no longer use those items to cook food with again.
I think if you aren't using lye it would be OK.
Natasha Green it's just soap, not unprocessed lye. You might as well say you have to throw out your dishes because you washed them in soapy water.
'Why ?"
Why do so many of these people with their homemade laundry soaps use so much alkali (borax and washing soda here)? And then pretend they can use so little of the mixture per washload? There's hardly any soap in there!
Robert Goodman
True.
I dont understand
You don’t need to use both borax and washing soda. They are both alkaline water softeners.
Silly. Potassium hydroxide doesn’t have a ‘longer chain’. Your liquid soap is just bar soap dissolved in water.
Glycerin adds ‘soapiness’? What’s that?
+1 = 13 = Throw it away!
adding no Chemicals? Don't you know that water is a chemical?
your not using castile soap your using bastille soap
Marion Sallee plz clarify. What is Bastile vs castile?
