Great comparison! I’m a Leica fanboy, and shoot M10-D, SL2, and Q2M, but you’ve almost got me convinced to add an original Q to the family! I love how the Q cameras are really becoming a gateway for more photographers to join the Leica community. Keep up the excellent work!
I have the Q, bought on 2022, and I have no words. Quality, and the crop you can do to the image is awesome. Zoom and zoom without lose quality. And same lens as q2.
Agreed. I shoot a Q and have been trying to justify ‘upgrading’ to the Q2… but I’m still super happy with the Q so haven’t done so yet. Maybe if I can find a used one well below market?!?…
Thanks for a great video! I do think you are underselling the crop modes though. Shooting on actual different lenses in that example you showed, the photographer moved the camera physically to get the same framing of each shot. If we do the same thing using the crop modes, moving farther away to frame the subject within the crop marks in the camera, we will get the same compression effect. Of course sacrificing a bit of sharpness due to not utilizing the entire sensor.
Probably so, I did like it in camera a lot... but when I was editing in post I always ended up back at the raw file and cropping myself. But for some it will definitely be useful.
Proper side by side comparison with the cameras taking the same photo, and then comparing the result. This is how it's supposed to be done. Other youtubers, take notice. Bravo Dominic!
I have a Q-P and Q2, love them. When I was buying the Q2, I indeed plan to sell the Q-P. But end up having both, just love them and don't want to give them up. lol
Confirming what others have said here. He gets the cropping argument completely wrong. The difference between, say, a 28mm and 75mm shot has to do with the change in perspective caused by changing the camera-to-subject distance to keep the subject the same size in the frame. If you don’t move and just change from a 28mm lens to a 75mm one, the result is the same as cropping.
@@terryallen9546I’m referring to what he says around @6:00. The lens doesn’t change perspective, it’s the camera-to-subject distance. So, if you crop to 75mm and move back to where you would be with a 75mm lens, the perspective will be the same as with a true 75mm lens. Hope that clarifies.
Not so sure it’s flawed and the simple example I have is this, shoot on a Sony with the 24f1.4 gm, I’d use crop mode to get the 35mm or what I thought was the 35, I then bought the 35mm and the difference of separation and compression makes a huge difference. The shape at a true 75mm is completely different to it cropped in on a 28. Your just cropping in in camera.
@@darmaher4481 No you are getting this wrong or mixing it with something else. A 35mm cropped to 85mm is the exact same thing as a real 85mm (the difference being the resolution) it could be that the lens you bought just has better separation and less distortion maybe that's why you think that. I personally have always used that crop mode with a 35mm in video because I didn't lose any resolution on the camera I was using. It was exactly like a 50mm (approximately) so I could always switch between the modes depending if I needed a zoom. But it's fine it is indeed easy to mix up but if you do some research about the technical things you'll quickly discover the truth, it's very easy to misunderstand

You are correct about the compression between 50 and 28 BUT if you step back to re frame the head of the person you get the same compression as a 50mm because you have now changed the distance from the camera and subject.
Hey man, great video, it really helped to put some thoughts into perspective regarding these two cameras, specially now with the Q3 on the market. Will look for second hand Q in the market and if I end up using it as it should, might jump later on for the Q3. Thanks a lot! cheers. !
I have an original Q and I'm waiting for that Q3 to drop with the M11 sensor and flip up screen which will be a game changer for low light shooting/dynamic range while also having the option to shoot 60MP.
i think the explanation on distortion in crop mode, and that it's the same in all crops... that part is wrong. distortion is also affected by the distance of the camera from the subject. so if you fill the entire 28mm frame with a subject, then move away so the same subject now fills the 75mm frame, the distortion is very different. yes, you cannot get the benefits of shallow depth of field of a long lens, but the distortion is similar to a long lens in this example. (i just tried it).
I like the color profile of the original q a lot better, although it is a minute difference. is that just me? great photos btw. also, how was ur experience of cropping in on the q? is the 24mp enough for a crop in for a 35mm look?
Hey Zion… honestly the color profiles are very very similar. I prefer the q in low light slightly, but as far as colors I didn’t notice much. But cropping on the q is bad. It’s just not enough data to go in much. 35mm can work, but you may see some loss of details which may be annoying. Def not past 35 though

Great review as usual! I was on the market for a Q, Q-P or a Q2 for months, and ended up buying both Q and Q-P almost the same time. I love the Q-P so much, I returned the beautiful Q back to B&H. Why kept Q-P in place of regular Q? The Q-P is an inconspicuous and sleek-styled update to the original Q. The removal of the front red dot in favor of a classic Leica script engraving on the top plate is the most important thing to me, and it also sports a flat matte black paint finish for an even darker appearance (it's hard to tell, you only can feel it when you have it in your hands). Additionally, the Q-P has a redesigned shutter release and On/Off switch that offers improved tactility, similar to that of M and CL-series cameras. I believe the feeling of the new power switch on the Q-P is close to that of Q2. I think I would love a Q2 for its better EVF. After using the outstanding EFV on my Lumix S1R, I was spoiled, cannot happy with the EVF on the Q-P. I think I eventually will pick up a used Q2 to replace my Q-P, they are currently almost the same price in the used market.
I actually love the Q-P as well, I think it's a fantastic looking camera! I think the rarity of them has made the 2nd hand market a bit overinflated (especially compared to the Q's), but I've always wanted to pick one up. They're a bit hard to find which tells me the value may increase as time goes on, but I think the Q2 will really come down in price once the Q3 hits the market soon. Thanks for watching!

It’s weird that I really love the Q too. I wonder if I’m biased because it was my first Leica, or because it’s so much cheaper. Either way they’ll keep coming down in price so keep your eyes peeled. Thanks for watching!
What's missing here? That the batteries for the Q can be found cheaper, or aftermarket, or from Panasonic (DMW-BLC12) and that does not happen on Q2 and Q3. It's a huge difference and for me would be something important. Nevertheless, the Q2 seems by today (2024) not a option at all from what I've seen here on YT. Colors look nicer on Q also low light performance. I'm on the fence for a Q but honestly I do recognize that I also love most of the time to use JPEG SOOC did not find yet a video that can explain perfectly how far is a Q JPEG from a DNG file when comes to image rendition. I'm a Fuji guy and even if I do not rely completely on Fujifilm recipes, it's easy for me to be happy with a Provia or Velvia basic profile and I do have that curiosity about Leica Q profiles. Does anyone is happy enough to do a "basic" retouch on a Q JEPG on Lightroom or Snapseed for posting on social media or just to keep an image without being 1h retouching a DNG. With 52 years, I'm starting to loose the patience to edit and convert all my street photography when going out. Loved the video BTW.
2 years on, and with the release of the Q3, would you still stand by the Q? The Q on the secondhand market is still selling for over £2000. The Q2 can now be gotten for less than £3000. Would you say that the Q2 can now justify an extra £1000 over the Q? Great comparison video by the way.
Hi. I was able to rent a Q2 for the weekend. On the Leica forum I read a topic about autofocus. A few people mentioned that Q1 has better autofocus than Q2, and that for more mpx it is worse. Do you confirm?
Good review, Where I am Just found out that 2nd hands Q and Q2, depending on the unit conditions Q is selling about 20-30% cheaper. I thought the Q would be much cheaper, I suppose the red dot still holds its value, possibly buy one to try ha ha. I think the best value to buy now is the 2nd hand Sony A7RII and put on a Sony 28mm lens and start shooting, if I like it then proceed to the next stage. BTW I own both.
Totally agree... but I also look at the other side of things. If you think about it, I bought a Q for 2800 ish, had it for over a year, and can sell it for the exact same price or possibly a couple hundred more. The Leica value is not going anywhere if you can find a clean one.
It is rather interesting to compare the selling price of a new Q2 with a new Leica 28mm Summilux interchangeable lens alone. You can add the price of a matching Leica body to the lens to make it a fair comparison. For a different brand, maybe the Sony A7III plus a Sigma 24mm f2.8 would be a perfect match [I own a Q2 and the Sony combination]. The Sony is the better camera technically but the Q2 is the most pleasing to use, marginally.
Also want to point out that if you shoot a portrait at 28mm F1.7 and you crop into 50mm, it's essentially the look of 50mm F2.8. You can test this by shooting the subject with a 50mm lens at F2.8 then shoot the Q from the same distance at F1.7. Identical images.
This is very true, but using the 50 mm frame lines to compose a photo means that one would move further away from the subject to make the subject fit the frame lines (assuming one wanted to fill the frames with, say, a face in both instances). That would give a different perspective. In fact, the perspective would be the same as using a 50mm lens from the same distance, though the depth of field would be that of a 28 mm lens (though the increased subject distance would have an effect). Focal length, subject distance and aperture dictate depth of field, but only subject distance determines perspective.
I’m waiting for the Q3 and hope they give us… - M11 image sensor - internal storage for redundancy - better autofocus - SL2 EVF - better video capability - I’d prefer a 35mm Summilux lens that can crop into 50mm and 75mm That to me would be the perfect camera.
Yes, you do get exactly the look of a 50mm or 75mm, etc, when cropping in. You really miss the whole point. In your example, with portait and tons of focal lengths, the distance from the camera was changed with every focal length to keep the same composition! That is the whole reason for the distortion change, not the focal length. If you keep the distance the distortion will be exactly the same at every focal length, but the composition will change. 23mm on a crop sensor looks exactly the same as 35mm on FF in terms of distortion. The DOF is reduced with the crop and that’s just a simple multiplication. If you’ve 2x crop you’ll have 2xDOF.
@@DominicPhillip But I want the full frameyness with regards to depth of field. I've also owned the original X100 and the T. SONY discontinued the very camera I wanted a while back!
I think Leica will not do that in the future, cause they want to avoid any faulty on any moving mechanism, as i find that's a common problem with most cameras with tilt screen
Hi DominicPhillip, I would like to blow your mind ;) , the “compression effect” at the crop mode 75mm of the q2 and the compression of an actual 75mm lens on a full frame is the same. The same is true for all the other crop modes. Take a minute and try it at home , put your q2 on a table , and another camera with a lens equivalent of the crop mode you will use on the leica . Voila same image ;) (edit: in the example you mention with the different images at different mm , the photographer was changing its distance from the subject. At lets say , 10 meters, with a q2 cropped and another camera with a 50mm lens on it , the image will be the same in terms of compression
and you know madly, that it's not the camera that takes pictures it's the photographers, if you are a mediocre photographer, you will take mediocre pictures even with a Leica Q, or QP, or Q2
They are no joke on the bank account! But they are fixed lens so it’s not just body, and for photographers the images are insane…. Still don’t know if they’re really worth the money though. Ha
If I sold a kidney, could I then afford a Q2, M10 monochrome, M4 35mm and an Ashai Pentax 67II. Then I’d never need another camera… (or maybe a Sony A7C too)
Ok, this is all nonsense. If you are going to make huge prints then yes, maybe 40 plus megapixels. But remember Most screens show a max of 2 megapixels and a 4 k screen will show no more than 4 megapixels! This all becomes very silly unless you are a dedicated industrial photographer or doing massive landsape prints

No. This won’t correct for foreshortening.
I’m waiting for the Q3 and hope they give us…
- M11 image sensor
- internal storage for redundancy
- better autofocus
- SL2 EVF
- better video capability
- I’d prefer a 35mm Summilux lens that can crop into 50mm and 75mm
That to me would be the perfect camera.
I like your list! I’d just do dual card slots instead of internal. You’d need a ton of internal storage with that sensor. I hope we see it 🙏🏽
I would love an x100v-style tilting screen.
@@HansdeHeer just buy the x100v and admit to yourself you wouldn't be able to tell the difference
Is it me or I almost always prefer the photos of the original Q? Color wise, I’m not pixel peeping
Sometimes I do! I love the colors coming out of the Q. I also love the colors out of the Q2 though, they're both pretty good imo.
Agree with you. Am very happy with my Q in second hand as far as I am concerned ;-) Thanks for your videos. Best regards,
tottaly agree!
If the Q2 was 35mm instead of 28mm, I'd buy one.
I get it. 35mm is my favorite. X100V maybe?
@@DominicPhillip But I want the full frameyness with regards to depth of field. I've also owned the original X100 and the T.
SONY discontinued the very camera I wanted a while back!
And you forgot to say neither camera, or in fact any Leica, have a tiltable screen, which is one of the reasons I sold my SL and kept my Fuji X-E4...
That's a great point. And I don't know that we're going to see that anytime soon either
I think Leica will not do that in the future, cause they want to avoid any faulty on any moving mechanism, as i find that's a common problem with most cameras with tilt screen
@@ElmarJournal I've never had an issue with any of my Fuji tilt screens and I've had them since they first came out...
@@MikeKleinsteuber lucky you, i haven't also, but always see the issue everytime im scrolling on amy camera forums
No

The consistently looks better than the q2 phtos to me but i just like my pics a bit warmer. Imma get a q one day
👍👍
So 47.3 is more than double 24…
you're right
and you know madly, that it's not the camera that takes pictures it's the photographers, if you are a mediocre photographer, you will take mediocre pictures even with a Leica Q, or QP, or Q2
100% facts
Have the Q with almost zero interest in q2. Q3….we will see.
I love my Q but I actually do prefer the build quality of the Q2. If the Q2 comes down enough in price I'd love that as my EDC
$2500 and $5000 for bad video and just body only. whoah! That sucks! Great for photographers though, the pictures look stunning.
They are no joke on the bank account! But they are fixed lens so it’s not just body, and for photographers the images are insane…. Still don’t know if they’re really worth the money though. Ha
Look at it as a great Summilux lens with a free body included. ;)
@@HansdeHeer lol
I would love one of these, just need to sell all my belongings a kidney.
You do have two kidneys right? I say go for it lol
If I sold a kidney, could I then afford a Q2, M10 monochrome, M4 35mm and an Ashai Pentax 67II. Then I’d never need another camera… (or maybe a Sony A7C too)
I’ve thought about posting up half my liver too… I need a hassleblad lol
Ok, this is all nonsense. If you are going to make huge prints then yes, maybe 40 plus megapixels. But remember Most screens show a max of 2 megapixels and a 4 k screen will show no more than 4 megapixels! This all becomes very silly unless you are a dedicated industrial photographer or doing massive landsape prints
Lol, you need to explain to Leica users for 5 minutes what digital zoom is? Why does it even have it?
Well it is fun. Maybe a marketing gimmick?
