  • Chris is a street and portrait photographer based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. He is currently working on a project "1000 Strangers" where he is attempting to capture 1000 street portraits in a year. I've known Chris for nearly 10 years now, and I thought I'd catch up with him to let him share his story and describe his approach to photography.

    A real photographer and a good guy It's rare. Your attitude matches mine So many rabbit on and on about how everyone hates being photographed in the street Like you I had maybe three or four question me over several years. Well done my friend

    Love your 1000 portrait project idea, that should be amazing when finished. Hopefully you’ll get those published in book form.
    And also, love your skull rings, live for the moment!

    Love Chris's enthusiasm. And I'm encouraged to get that new ( actually used ) camera with an articulating screen so I can also shoot on the street. Really good interview.

    Great video Jay of my mate Chris. I’m amazed you kept him down to 11 minutes ha ha!
    Joking aside…really good explanation of what drives him and the relevance of what, to many, is a pointless genre of photography.

    Great interview, thank you. Admire your honesty and to-the-point discussion: no I don't think you go off at a tangent, I feel you just enhance what you're saying. I soak up stuff like this from street photographers and think about my own approach to street photography, particularly the things outside of my usual comfort zone.
    As a Southern who relocated to the North, twenty years ago, northern cities are the best. My favourite is Sheffield but I can see the allure of Newcastle.
    Thank you again.

    I guess my way into photography is the same as Chris’, but Chris was the one with the cool camera which sparked my photography journey.
    I’d always taken photos on my phone “of stuff”, but until I’d seen the x100 I didn’t think that digital cameras could have personality. I asked him what it was when he came up to the hatch where I work (stack Newcastle) and we got talking- and that’s when our friendship started and my photography journey.
    Chris will always be the person who sparked my interest at the right time, with the right piece of kit. And I’ll always be thankful.

    Dude, scrap this silly project. Producing 1000 portraits in a year without producing crap isn't possible. Why not challenge yourself to 10 amazing portraits in a year? We don't need any more bad photography in the world.

    • @ShutterProductionsGB
      @ShutterProductionsGB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Who defines what is good and bad, it is a big target to hit and if rushed, you're right there could be some mediocre photos in there, but give Chris some credit for the dedication to the project.

    • @chrisharrison9500
      @chrisharrison9500 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Why? I can't think of one good reason not to do it. All my photography is for me so even if everyone of the 1000 portraits is shite, guess what? It doesn't matter one jot. I'm not shooting for you or anyone else. :)

    • @peaceplease
      @peaceplease 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So much this! He should aim to take 10 exceptional photos, but shouldn't get discouraged if they don't come easily. John Freeman says that, on average, 1 in 100 photos are "good". Wowee! I wonder how many portraits he would have to take to achieve that?

    • @ShutterProductionsGB
      @ShutterProductionsGB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@peaceplease I've personally been doing my own 100 Strangers project for nearly ten years now and have around 20 I'm completely satisfied with out of about 300, but this doesn't take away from the fact that he is enjoying what he's doing and is making the pictures for himself. It's a serious confidence booster asking people for portraits and he, me and everyone else should learn more about their craft with every photo we take so I don't see the issue with overshooting, especially when every portrait he takes he gets to speak with the person for 5 minutes, it's a whorlsome activity in my opinion regardless of outcome.
