If you're like me you love a good old fashion scare. And since it's the spooky season I figured to try something new. And being that Dr. Hannibal Lecter is one of my favorite movie characters. And My favorite Literary character. And My Favorite Villain I thought I can have some fun with this. Also I've been wanting to do a book vs movie comparison for a long time. Given that everyone knows about Silence Of The Lambs and there has been numerous videos on Silence Of The Lambs compared to the book I thought it would be more fun to take a look at the totally underrated and less appreciated adaptation of The first Thomas Harris novel to feature our favorite Cannibal with a PhD. Red Dragon. So sit back and enjoy Red Dragon movie vs book what's the difference.

Moreover the book hits home how Molly was right to hate Crawford. In the end, Will went along with it and it cost him damn near everything. I hate how Hollywood films refuse to give the protagonist any vulnerability, He just throws the letter in the sea and goes on with his life.

@@unicronsaber4268 These guys are talking about the movie adaptations.
Red Dragon, the book, may be better, though I find Gumb to be a more compelling subject that Dolarhyde. So my personal preference is still _Silence..._
But with the movie, the is no question.
The _Silence..._ movie is both layered and subtle. Measured and masterful.
      _Red Dragon_ is...something less.
It's just a little too flashy. A little to much winking for the audience. And way too much "BWAAAAH! LOOK!"

@@dornravlin no honestly sometimes there are great examples of unfaithful adaptations that were better or of equal status to this source material. Like The Shinning, or All Quiet On The Western Front. The thing that Manhunter hit the nerve with me was. I love the Dr. Lecter novels (well the first two at least). and I feel like the lore of the stories (which I give a little too much credence too). It wasn't accurate to that and it made me upset. Much if a historian watched a historical epic that wasn't historically accurate and despite the movie being good or not. the mere fact that the history was distorted or not respected makes you react more negative. So I think Manhunter was a good film but the unfaithfulness to a cannon which I have a deep connection to made me dislike it.

Later I learned that the events of the movie are based on a true story, but honestly, I guess every story is somehow related to this, maybe, later or earlier or vice versa. Someone goes on and makes a movie anyway. If he had the copyright or not.
His first name started with Gregor, somehow being proud, because of the creation of the Gregorian Calender. Nice person, at all, my teacher not the character portrayed by Anthony Hopkins. Anthony Hopkins, a person I only know from acting in movies, playing different personalities.
Asked me how PC (Personal Computer) works gave him a book about MS-DOS maybe Version 3.3. Microsoft Disk Operating System. The image of the book.
Guess what? Look for yourself? Movie was remade to often.

Quite disturbing the fact, that noone made a movie about "The Dark Eye", or in german "Das schwarze Auge" a creation by Ulrich Kiesow. Guess one of the better role playing games. Started with "The sword of destiny", going further "Startrail" and "Schadow over Riva".
In German "Die Schicksalsklinge", "Sternenschweif" and "Schatten über Riva."

A much better adaptation of Red Dragon is the movie Manhunter. EDIT: It may not be as "accurate" as Red Dragon. However, Manhunter is stand alone masterpiece by Michael Man. It would be this way even if it wasn't about characters that became part of pop culture. It's a far better film than Red Dragon on it's own merits.

I disagree. And I love the book and both film adaptations. I just think Manhunter jumps around far too much and is too choppy. The ending is silly. We don’t get much character development or explanation for Dollarhyde and his actions. And at times I just felt like it was just a bunch of scenes thrown together until they decided then needed to get to the ending. I do thoroughly enjoy the intro. Love Will Graham’s scene in the Leeds’ bedroom. Graham’s interview with Lecter is great. But I still felt like it was all just too choppy.

Manhunter is FAR superior to Red Dragon. Edward Norton was incredibly miscast as Will Graham in comparison with William Peterson. Anthony Hopkins is only back for an easy paycheck and after the first scene, is completely unnecessary to the film. The idea that Red Dragon is even in the same zipcode as Silence is prosperous and borderline offensive.

      Couldn't agree more...
Aside from Fiennes performance as Dollarhyde, this movie was a complete money-grabbing trash heap.
Norton and Hoffman offered such vanilla-flavored characature performances,...I think a "community theater" gig would've been more relevant on their resumes. I'll give Hopkins a pass, since he's even admitted that by the time this movie was filmed, he was basically "having fun" w the Lecter role,...and getting paid handily for that fun. Hopkins actual age vs the story time-line was completely ridiculous,...but that's who the audiences came to see 🤷‍♂️.
Aside from the Hannibal network series, and Manhunter, the DeLaurentis Co. hasn't really offered anything above average in the Lecter saga (SOTL was produced by MGM). In my opinion, Red Dragon movie is at the very bottom of that list (that includes HRising).

You are so wrong. Red Dragon is a flawless masterpiece. Manhunter has so many problems. No to mention Steven Lang was totally misscasted. William Peterson was so ugly in Manhunter and is overall just not a good actor. Ralph Fiennes was a far superior version of the Red Dragon

The statement that Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Dr. Lecter turned the character into a pop culture icon is 100% true. Undeniable. Hopkins got an Oscar for that role. And it’s also true that Manhunter got a second viewing and its cult following because attention was drawn back to it after the success of Silence Of The Lambs. And yes I know, and many other people know that Brian Cox played him first. It really sounds like you wanted me to give that movie an honorable mention. Unfortunately that’s not what this video was about, Manhunter, for this video, had nothing to do with the equation. I’m sorry if you were disappointed or not what you are looking for. However I’m more than willing to make a Manhunter vs red dragon review.
