Update on this transaction. Flipmode_comics has provided me a full refund on the purchase. I appreciate all the helpful feedback from the community! 🍻🙏🙏
A large signature partially obscuring Reeds face should absolutely be disclosed when selling any book, let alone a 12k book. Also the photos you requested. If you are not happy - RTN it! Will be harder to resell at some point even if in the distant future. You will find another at some time without a signature.
I bought a comic on their live sale a couple of weeks ago. They said there was a name on the cover. What the neglected to say is that the name was written in 3 different spots on the front cover. There were also a few other deal breaker issues they didn't state, huge spine roll, and more writing on the back cover
If 12k is going to be paid for a comic like this, then I'd need to see it in person. A flight or car travel to visit is a small price to pay. I did it for AF15. Buying something online without even receiving crystal clear photos......is just insane.
Honestly, not disclosing a rusted staple is shitty business, especially on a huge book that you paid over market value on. The fact they didn’t send you pictures after you asked too is double shady. A rusted staple on a grail like that is a big deal. It’s just going to migrate and get worse over time.
@@dumpsterbaby3155 maybe watch the whole video before you make snide comments. Tue video wasn’t clear enough to see that info. He also asked for pictures via DM after the sale and was ignored. Yes, it is his responsibility and his fault for completing the purchase without waiting for the pictures. But he also acted in good faith and trusted the seller. Anyone selling comics of this nature should be willing to give a refund or make it right with the buyer
The book is clean and presents well. It is generally accepted in the paper conservation field that if you keep the storage conditions at acceptable levels and the books are completely dried out, that rust migration from rusty staples will not get any worse. If you are storing your books properly (low humidity), you should be fine with this nice-looking book. Congrats!
First off, this is an insane book so to hear you upgrading your copy is like a pipe dream for me. I agree with everyone’s assessment if you are making a $12k purchase let alone anything in general all imperfections should be mentioned. There is no room for error for books at this magnitude
I just rewatched that live cause I was buying stuff from that live and not once did either of them say anything about the writing on the cover or rusty staples id be pissed but I do love that book its one of my grails 🤔
What an awesome book! I hear you about being disappointed in the flaws you weren't aware of until getting the book, but still a beautiful one. Great advice to protect ourselves in our own purchases.
As you mentioned in the video, the colors are very good, and it doesn't have chipping. A very presentable 3.5 even with the rusty staple and the 'Harold' on the front cover as it's not distracting. I think you did fine - I've seen 3.5s of other books that present far worse. Congrats on the purchase!
Retired from collecting quite a while ago. However, here are a couple of considerations for you regarding the signature written on the cover. If it's not mentioned in the CGC notes, one of two things happened: (1) It was missed, and you lucked out with the grade you received. Or (2) The grader saw the signature and deemed it not significant enough to alter the grade. Either way, that's a win/win situation.
I appreciate your whole story. This will help me when I purchase. The signature is a problem but still a great book. I think Flipmode would like to hear from you if you're not satisfied.
This is an awesome book to own in any grade and you should feel confident as it is a book that will always see growth in the market. I do think you slightly overpaid for the book in a 3.5 given where the market is today, but as long as you hold the book for the long term you should make up the value. On the sellers side they need to do better, especially when selling books with these higher values. Full transparency and communication with the buyer is key.
Nice book! I think it looks great for a 3.5. The name on the cover and the rusted staple aren't dealbreakers considering the grade. The book has great colors and still presents very nicely. I think it was a great purchase!
I think we've all been there, certainly on ebay purchases ... simple solution, keep the book for a few years, be happy with the purchase, then in 5 years let the book go as part of a trade for a bigger book. 😀
Yes responsibility goes both ways, but flipmode should give their buyers more access to the information. You could have looked it all up if flipmode would have taken the time to send more pictures. I won’t say anything else though…. Flipmode….🤦♂️
It’s a great book to own! I would be able to look past the writing on the book. Graders notes really should be posted with multiple closeup pictures. Awesome purchase!
An incredible book to have in your collection. I have a CBCS copy of ASM #1 in a 4.0. This really isn't a bad book at all. The book looks super clean from the video. That would mean there has to be some serious flaws for it to be a 3.5. Your mistake was rushing into a purchase. I'm trying to get an X-Men #1 right now. I'd rather overpay later and make sure I get a copy I like than making a snap judgement and being disappointed. You could easily move that book for a decent price or make a nice trade for an upgrade. You can never lose with a copy of ASM #1!!!
PS: I meant to say this in my previous comment : We ( as COLLECTORS) will spend any amount on something we really want, and the dollar amount we spend is insignificant. So, to you, my good sir, I say, in spite of what anyone says, have no regrets, just enjoy your book.
Trying hard to be polite here, but why would you spend 12k on a book that's selling for 9900? ASM 1 in a 3.5 hasn't been worth 12k since last July. Just curious why you would want to overspend. Sorry to hear about the undisclosed issues with the book. Flipmode has always been shady, in my opinion. Return the book!!!
Yeah that's signature blends in pretty good... I almost recently bought amazing spider man number 9 but then I noticed someone had colored in electro and spider man's eyes..
Why didn't you just get Amazing Fantasy #15? I know you could have gotten a low grade for 13K cause I saw an Amazing Fantasy #15 for 13K at a comic con a few weeks ago it was a CGC 0.5 grade.
You bought a graded book. There should be Nothing disclosed unless the case is damaged. Anyone buying a $10k+ book should have the knowledge that CGC notes are free now. You can't blame the seller for You not doing your homework. The seller got the book graded by a professional service company to eliminate ALL doubts on the book's condition. It's up to the buyer to not jump the gun and do their research before bidding $12k. No offense. It's a great book regardless of anyone's name written on it.
@@AlextheComicHoarder Responsibility was already taken by the seller when he had it graded. It'd be the same thing as ANY seller saying there's "a rip or tear" in a book graded 2.0......why should they do that? It's up to the buyer to do their diligence by checking notes....or in this case.....using your sight. Blow up the images on the book. You like white pages (as most people do). Does the seller need to disclose that too? It's graded.....people can blow up the label and see for themselves. I think people are confusing being "considerate" with the word "responsible" Don't forget that this is a $10k+ book that ALL buyers can ask questions if there's no notes on CGC as to why it got a 2.5 if they have vision problems.
Congrats on the book. I don't know if 12K is a good price, but you know with a 3.5 it's not going to be perfect. If you had close-up photos, would you have changed your mind? Also, wasn't Steve "Harold" Ditko involved with this book? :-)
Awesome book!! I have this book in the same grade mine has a lot of chipping and a spine split. Book looks excellent!! I would take that book With signature any day! Awesome video Bro!
Long term you can't go wrong with Spiderman 1. Unfortunately the stock market has really tanked this week, and that always causes a chain reaction with high end collectables. Try not to watch any up coming auctions because I guarantee there will be lot of ASM 1's coming up
Nice pickup and nice upgrade to your 2.5 as well. Confident you paid FMV...The signature at the bottom is a bummer but its somewhat out of site. I have a 3.0 Blue Label and has similar spine wear. Im blessed to have it though.
Should not be worried about it you bought the grade of a blue chip key Shouldn't have trouble re selling at some point its only the time you are willing to hold on to it will continue to go up in value such an iconic marvel character.
Disagree. The level of collectors willing to pay $12k plus for a book like this will absolutely have an issue with the staple and writing. There’s a saying that goes you buy the book not the grade. You present a 3.0 and this 3.5 that present the same for $12k and most collectors will pay for the 3.0 over this 3.5. A rusty staple is a killer on a book of this caliber
Buck up! effendi that's a great book to own in any condition. As years pass these books will be become even more rare and expensive so take it as a win that you own this key-est of key issue! It's Spidey number one, how many people you know own one of those? Super bragging rights! Also I gotta say it was such a common thing of the era that kids would write their name on books to keep them separate from a brother or whoever it's almost cool in it's way, in my mind at least growing up in the .20 cent era things like some kids name on a cover are like banana seats SSP cars.
Personally yes you screwed up big time plus why would go from 2.5 white pages to 3.5 cream off white pages that's no sense you downgraded a good quality book just to get a 3.5 bad move. plus with that name being written across reeds face really kills your investment dang bro you mess up really bad can you get your money back?
When it comes to alot of the older books like blue chip keys I wouldn't fork out 12k for a 1grade point bump not worth it. More modern books then maybe from like a 9.6 to a 9.8 I probably would.

That’s a first class way to go. I will definitely look to buy from them. Also, great info for me, a relatively novice collector.

The rust would’ve been a deal breaker for me. Rust migrates. It might be hard to get a 3.5 price down the road.
Sorry you didn’t get the gold label for the Harold signature.
