    Just use a wire wheel on an angle grinder or on a drill. It will be a much better result.

    James, you should stick with the axle that's already on the car. The rear wheel alignment is what's swung for you. You should treat the rust with Vactan or suchlike before you paint it. It doesn't have to be super neat. The new dust shields will show them up and you'll regret it if you just throw the parts back on as they are without painting them. Besides, you're still waiting for parts so you can spend the time prepping and painting and it will be all done by the time the other dust shields turn up. Keep up the good work.

    Treat how you would treat any other of your cars just because it’s an old Astra it don’t mean you shouldn’t do a properly job, just think you’ll have it a long time and you could always make it a show car and make the callipers black it would look so much better

    • @ShaunCothier

    I’m going to say that you should stick with the axle that’s already on your Vx Astra mk4 better the devil you know than you don’t and you do have a good point about the alignment not to say that it’s not 100% correct now but could be worse if you changed it for the eBay axle.
    Great video James looking forward to the next one

    Leaf the original axle and just change the hubs etc..
    Red is the color for the break callipers. ( asuming you go go for the silver rims?)

  • @VSTV1993
    @VSTV1993 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Keep the original axle on and swap the hubs over, less things to go wrong + its not like you can do the alignment yourself so it will cost more money than its worth

      VS TV it’s gonna need an alignment either way really

    I just refurbished the front suspension on my citroen saxo, I got the front struts fully broken down and it only cost me £30 at a local shop to get the strut and top spring mount shot blasted and powder coated in black and the strut now looks absolutely brand new. Just took a few days to do. Worth looking around local places for powder coating.

    I think because you've got the sand blaster use it on these parts you will feel better at the end of the job. the paint will look good I know it's an old car but the car still looks quite nice while you're waiting for the rest of the parts to come through.

  • @ianrimmer1968
    @ianrimmer1968 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Id keep the axle that's already on your car. You know it's a good unit. Just in case there is an issue with the new axle, I wouldn't take the chance.

    Hi James,i would swop the hubs over and put them on your axle on the Astra,at least that one is aligned,i would paint the parts with hammerite as they have been cleaned.

    For chunky iron parts like the knuckle you can do a simple and easy vinegar bath that will remove most of the rust really well. Then backing soda solution to neutralize the vinegar (crucial)>primer>paint>clear coat. Anything else will be ruined quite quickly

    James are the brake pipes you took off exactly the same on the axle with brake shoes as opposed to discs? I would vote for using the axle on the car for reasons stated by others. Also, I would do a proper cleanup job more for the satisfaction of doing a good job. I'm biased though as mine is also an 02 Astra.

    get a cheap wood chisel set for scraping, also a wire/knotted wheel attachment for drill or grinder. much less time and effort for better results.cleaning with a bit of wd40 or similar also helps keep down the dust and helps clean a bit more thoroughly. it may be just an old astra but you would have had it all done with less time and effort.

    If you take the mounting brackets off the fresh axle and mount it with just using the 2 bolts though the bushes you won’t need alignment !. Even if you mount it by using the brackets unless Vauxhall have changed things on the mk4, the back axle beam isn’t adjustable they never where on the mk3 !.
