one thing I like to mention is history is written by the winners..keep that in mind....a lot of "history" is just that his-story..aka the country that wins will spread whatever lies they need to so they look like the good guys....its almost propaganda being taught in schools worldwide ...heck in japan they didn't teach kids until 1984 that they started the war with america which created older generations resentment of america before that cause they didn't know the truth

Fun Fact: When Japan signed their declaration of surrender, the ship upon which it was signed, The USS Missouri, was flying the very same American flag Commodore Perry had flown when he had come to Japan to open the borders. It was there by request of Douglas MacArthur, who was also a descendant of Perry.

During Edo period, while Japan was closed, no one could travel out of Japan and no one could come in. Due to this isolation, the Japanese navy became really weak and couldn't protect it or even hope to protect itself when US came in. So Japan agreed to open country but because of this opportunity US and other countries were eating away Japanese economy. Many people were not happy about this idea of being overly dependent on foreign help so people started movements like Jōi movement. Since the shogunate has to hear what Emperor says, clans close to Emperor could monopolize his decision. Given this the clans of Choshu and Satsuma became enemies to teeth while the Shogunate was paving way for Japan being a stage for colonial war. A man named Sakamoto Ryouma was able to forge the Satsuma-Choshu alliance secretly and forced Shogunate to return all the power to Emperor and designed the Meiji constitution. This helped Japan to create a really strong navy to match up with foreign countries and this helped to keep Japan from being conquered.
I think that's what you tried to get on about. Sorry for mistakes in history (if any). I am not best at history but I do know some well enough.

Another thing to consider in the debate on the atomic bombings on Japan is that the Allies had been fire bombing Tokyo and other cities for quite some time already. Most building in these cities were wooden causing massive fires in the cities that killed more people than the atomic bombings themselves

The part of history he is talking about at 12:02 was the first time in history the emperor was see in photograph with another person was at the end of ww2.
Besides the first picture ever to be shown with the emperor and another human; the person (Gn. McArthur) was not kneeling to the "living god" emperor. This was seen as disrespect.

Hi Jaby & Achara, the military government had been training all civilians to defend their homeland against invasion forces. I believe the conflict ended when the Japanese Emperor insisted on making his 1st ever public broadcast on the radio. During the broadcast, he told his people "they had to endure the unendurable" & agree to U.S. Surrender terms.

Despite Pearl Harbor, America gave Japan notice that it was going to bomb them. They warned them by dropping pamphlets and such basically saying, "Hey guys, your government is lying about winning the war, and we have huge bombs we will drop if you don't quit". So while America DID want vengeance and all, they also did realize what dropping the bombs would do and at least tried to give notice.
That doesn't make it right of course, but admittedly it's better than just sneakily dropping an atom bomb without any citizens of Japan even thinking they were in any kind of danger (the way Japan did to Pearl Harbor, in a way). It's basically ALL OF IT just really horrible and atrocious. Especially when you learn/understand about Earth's place in the universe as a whole; how small we are and how petty and insignificant these conflicts are in the grand scheme of things.
    But hey... we're only human.

One of the main reason they dropped the a bomb. Was to put a show of power against soviet union who was thinking about occupying the conquered countries during the war, instead of liberating them. And also because of the Japanese belief that it is disgraceful to surrender.

I know that many Americans are well read and educated, but you can't deny that many of them are only interested in the history of their own country and they tend to be ignorant about the rest of the world. So it was really refreshing and heartwarming to hear an American almost absentmindedly utter the words "the Meiji Restoration". I guess what I mean to say is congrats, you're way above the average American in that respect!!!

On the subject of utilizing two atom bombs, the way I've been told it was not so much a matter of wanting to crush Japan for Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was, ultimately, an excuse to get into the war when the US people were isolationist and anti-involvement, and while it was terrible, it let the US do something it wanted to do already but didn't have the public support for. (There are theories that the US knew that Pearl harbor was going to be hit ahead of time but didn't act on the info so they would have their justification, but I'm not convinced by them.) When the debates on whether or not to drop the atom bombs began, it was ultimately decided that military casualties on both sides, along with civilian casualties on Japan's side, would have been significantly higher during a land invasion than if the atomic bombs were used. In short, more people would die overall in an invasion than would die in the expected blast radius of the weapons. The initial use of the atom bomb was followed up with an immediate demand for surrender, and the second bomb was dropped following Japan's refusal to surrender. The theory I've heard on the reasoning for their surrender after the second bomb was that, following the first bomb, Japan was still so stunned and disbelieving that such damage could be wrought by a single weapon that they didn't believe the US could do it a second time, and once the US proved they could do it as often as they needed Japan finally surrendered. That's just how it's been portrayed to me, though, and we all know that the history books are written by the victors, so that information could easily be heavily slanted in the US's favor. I don't really have an opinion on whether it was right or wrong; that's a matter for a far more in-depth conversation than belongs in a TH-cam comments section.

One thing I would like to point out is that the Japanese government wasn't all that shocked at the atomic bombings. Even before the first atom bomb, Tokyo(which was mostly made up of wooden buildings at the time) was completely destroyed in a single day through firebombing, and it even had a greater loss of life than either Hiroshima or Nagasaki. It wasn't just Tokyo either, before the atom bombs, Japan lost 68 cities to conventional bombings. To the Japanese government, not only were they prepared to lose more cities, but they even expected the US to develop more efficient ways at taking them out. It is even heavily debated if the atom bombs even had an effect on Japan's decision to surrender. It is more likely that the Soviet's deceleration of war on Japan is what caused Hirohito to surrender.

@@Umbrejolt That makes a fair amount of sense. The end of the war in Europe meant that both the US and, if they actually got involved, Russia could concentrate entirely on them. I'm not sure how the Japanese mentality at the time looked at the situation, whether or not America's take on surrenders were preferable to Japanese the way they were to Germans, but the simple mathematics of war turned very heavily against them with Russia involved, with no hope for victory. Russians were also far more... Brutal about their victories at the time, and likely to cause as much damage as possible if they invaded, as opposed to the Americans, who were already demanding peace.
Also, I'm kind of surprised at the amount of attention this post has suddenly gotten months after it was made. I figured it would just get buried and never seen. I'm always happy to learn more context on historical events like this, so I'm glad someone noticed~

I don't think it would have ended after the first bomb because Japan were soooo proud and they did not wanted to give up or give in to the US. But the 2nd bomb was so devastating and depressing that the Emperor just said fuck this, live to die another day basically. But Japan especially at that time were so proud with that warrior mentality that their army was not going to give up, even outnumbered.

The problem with debating right or wrong about the atomic bombs is that we're doing it with our current concepts of what's acceptable. They dropped those bombs during a war where all sides were carpet bombing everyone. Better weapons didn't exist. Modern concepts of war didn't exist. The people who made those decisions were thinking strategically, not emotionally. They were counting possible lives lost on all sides. They were counting time and resource costs. They were thinking about what's going on with the other nations in the area. And at that point in time, civilians in areas with war industries were considered war assets, by all participants. There's also the fact that Tokyo was never on the list of possible targets, because it didn't have any strategic value, and Kyoto was removed from the list by the US Secretary of War because it a significant cultural site, despite also having war industries. They were trying to hit military targets, and even warned people to leave major cities prior to the second attack.
Was it an absolutely terrible act that killed hundreds of thousands of people? That's beyond argument. But they were expecting that millions, perhaps tens of millions of lives would have been lost in an invasion of the Japanese islands. They had two terrible options, and chose the one they hoped would result in the quickest end to the war.

12:30 There was no need for either atomic bomb in my opinion. There's a reason that if WWII occurred today, then dropping an atomic bomb on Japan (or anywhere in the world in fact, even on North Korea) would be illegal.
