I also think there's a huge difference between actually making the ugly toilet roll ornaments with your kids and buying one made in a sweatshop in China. It's less about the ornament, and more about the memory of spending time with your kids.
Yeah, everyone in my family has a home-made fairy for the top of their trees. It's a tradition. Making something is not ugly, it's a time spent doing something nice. ...And I'm only just realising that Holly didn't make it on the tree this year yet. Disaster! She's probably weeping in the Christmas box.
When you start to think about all the stuff influencers buy for just Christmas decor on a wide scale…whoa some industries must really love social media because I don’t think it was always like this
One of my favorite memories was taking my oldest son, then 2, out to see the lights. We heard him saying "Wow!" at every house with lights, then as we passed houses without lights, he would say,"No wow." We were just listening to him and laughing 😂. I can still hear his little voice. ❤
When my kiddos were very young, one of them said that our house looked at the other houses in the neighborhood with all of the lights and probably felt sad about its few strings of lights. 😄
My husband is German and they had the candles on the tree when he was a kid. But! The tree went up on like Christmas eve, was freshly cut and was only lit the one time.
My friend is Swiss and she lights the candles and her husband stands next to it with a fire extinguisher. We all sit and nervously say Oh how beautiful....
Exactly. To do this you also have to choose the correct tree--one that is whorled with wide spaces (about 12 inches or 30 cm) between the branches. Candles can stand, ornaments and tinsel can hang in the spaces. Today's Christmas tree farms usually don't prune them to grow that way. They are bushy and everything lies on the surface. Artificial trees are worse. The type of fir is also important. A Douglas fir will go up like a torch in three weeks or less. And they are often kept on lots for months sometimes. Those are hazards with any type of lights. A freshly cut Noble, Balsam or Frasier fir will not ignite three or even four months later. They're still that green. I have held a butane lighter to the leaves to test them when I was worried about the condition of the tree.. (A small bit, held over the sink, of course. In case.) I haven't seen Kertzen (candles) lit on a tree often; however, there is nothing like it. More beautiful because the moment is so fleeting.
Do people remember reading about the Christmas fires that leave people homeless ?? Yeah, I know it's candles and cigarettes, but there might be some trees with candles involved too.

The in-laws rented a condo on the beach for Christmas and we went ahead of time and put up a tree for them. Instead of buying ornaments, we collected a bunch of shells that had a single hole from the beach and tied a red or green ribbon. A few of the Less Pretty shells we covered in glitter… for under $10 we were able to decorate the whole tree (we used ribbon as garland)… and while it definitely had a theme, it was less of a “beach” theme and more of a “use what your natural environment provides”. It was subtle and pretty

So, just for her during the holiday season, we set up a giant inflatable Menorah facing her home in our backyard. To our surprise, other neighbours adjacent to her are setting up giant inflatable rainbows and dreidels this year. A little holiday cheer for everyone! 🎄🌈🕎
As a young kid, we really didn't have a lot, but our parents scrimped and saved to give us kids a huge Christmas celebration. Every November for 23 years I took my son to ornament shop. He was allowed to select five per year. When he moved out on his own, I gave him all the ornaments we collected over the years. Now they hang on his tree.🌲
Wonderful. He's still going to be talking about those ornaments long after your gone. Maybe to his kids. Maybe to grandkids. Blessing to you and your family.
My mother got us each an ornament every year while growing up. They were selected with our age and personalities in mind. She gave them to us after we moved out, and when they're hung on the tree you can see our progression growing up. 🙂
Nick - This video reminded me of something a friend told me about her mother, wow - maybe 30 years' ago? Her mother lined the floor and walls of one corner of their somewhat-finished basement with tin foil - then sat the tree on the tin foil - so that the floor and walls would reflect the lights. Well, guess what. The plug for the lights was behind the foil and, yes, she went to plug in the lights THROUGH the foil as she stood on the foil on the floor...and was blown across the room. Fortunately, she lived...and without disability. You can't make this sh** up.

My favorite ornaments are the ones I handmade with my Nana, Mom, siblings, and eventually my own kids. Without the emotional connection, someone would say they are “tacky.” But that opinion is irrelevant to me, as those ornaments bring back the sweetest memories. THAT is what the Santa season, for me, is all about, especially as I am now the eldest generation in my family.
As a crafter, the Scandi stick trees look like a craft fair selling tree. Like, I will go to Ikea for a tree to sell my resin ornaments if I ever get to a Christmas Craft Fair.
Reminds me of early 1990s when people filled orange "jack-o-lanterns" bags with leaves. A friend had a visitor from Denmatk asking why everyone left garbage bags on their lawns
Pausing from the beginning real quick to say that is STILL my favorite sweater! The marbled raspberry is an excellent color for you! (At least, that's the way the color appears on my phone)
Growing up we had real candles on our tree. We had no tinsel! We only lit it up once and we lit it after dinner and blew them out while we were opening presents. My grandmother was European and it was for her.
On the candles Up until the 19th century, candles were used for decorations on Christmas Trees 🌲. And yes, they would blow out the fire before leaving the room. Someone would light up the tree at the beginning of the night when people would gather at the palor before dinner and Someone would put out the candles when they moved to the dinning room. And yes, there were fire incidents, a bucket of sand or water were kept near the tree. That's why we put lights on the trees today, we just replaced the candle with electricity. If you want a Victorian Christmas aesthetics, you can use those fake candles with batteries.
We use like 3 candles each year, so it's just symbolic. Strictly on outside branches . And yes I blow them out every time, don't leave it unsupervised.
I love nutcrackers! I visited many Christmas markets in Europe and loved them. I bought nutcrackers at each stop. Now, when I put them out for Christmas, they bring back many happy memories!
I'm German, and I don't know anyone who decorates their Christmas tree as lavishly as Americans do. Most people here, myself included, have rather subtle decorations compared to Americans (but unfortunately more and more people are becoming 'Americanized', especially when it comes to outdoor decorations). I would love to use real candles, but I can't because of my dogs, I have battery candles instead.
I’m with you Nick, simple and elegant! Candles in my windows, spotlight on my front door and white lights on my tree! Also, I grew up with Sunday drives! Great family memories!
Nick, your Christmas decor/ roast videos are Evergreen! 😆 I watch them like 5 times over! And what was up with that 🌲 in Paris?! OMG! 😱 😅🤣 I can’t. Must of been a Bacchus theme, right? 🤭
This year my tree only gets white fairy lights and an unbreakable topper - no ornaments - because I have 2 furry terrorists ( cats ) that are sure to try their best to topple the tree 🎄
Because of my cats, who love sitting under the tree, I always tie my tree to something (usually a curtain rod) with clear fishing line. It's saved many ornaments!
I don't like inflatable couches either but I am thinking if I ever see one at a thrift store I might buy it just to see the look on my cat's face the first time she starts clawing it.
I am so glad someone else finds nutcrackers creepy 😂 They seem as if they will come alive at midnight, their eyes glowing red and they'll be going "ack ack ack, I'M GOING TO CRACK YOUR NUTS!"
Back in 1967 bumming around Europe, my friend 😢Egels Bander , a Canadian, gave me a gift of a Xmas Santa dried apple decoration from Nuremberg Germany. Every year I would unpack it and tell the story of Egels. It lasted for at least 18 years when it finally passed away, much to the delight of my children who I forced to listen to the story.
Candles on the Christmas tree is still quite normal in Denmark, a survey from 2023 found that 14 % only do candles and an additional 19 % does both candles and electric lights (meaning every third Christmas tree actually have candles on them). For most people Lightning the candles isn’t an everyday thing, it is something you do on Christmas eve (where we celebrate Christmas), after you eaten the Christmas dinner. My family also lights them on new years eve (as only about half of the candle is burned down on the 24th), but that isn’t normal 🎄
Loved this Nick, your face was often priceless! Christmas has a gaudy aspect to it. I try to keep it classy but then I get excited when something with far too much glitter makes my heart sing. 😂
I'm glad we're finally addressing how odd nutcrackers are with those gaping mouths and dead eyes. Between nutcrackers and the Elf on the Shelf which I'm sorry looks like it's waiting for you to drift off so it can steal your kidneys, I feel like Christmas has Halloween beat hands-down for most terrifying decor.
It's worse than Halloween because it feels like gaslighting. Halloween, if something is creepy we can all agree it's creepy and is meant to be that way. Christmas it's all "oh, these are CUTE and WHOLESOME décor items!" as those terrifying uncanny valley humanoid things are put up everywhere 😱
I moved to Germany a few years ago and was shocked to see that they still sell christmas tree candle everywhere. Must still be a thing for a lot of people.
Same - live in Switzerland and a few friends say they have real candles in the tree to this day😱 but they did say they only light them for a short time at the beginning of the season 😂
Seeing that nostalgic Christmas tree with so many lights it was almost glowing red gave me such a boost of serotonin. It was exactly how my grandparents trees looked every year in the 80’s and 90’s. ❤❤❤❤
I lived in that neighborhood and on Halloween the neighborhood would not only be packed with kids and cars coming from other places but all the way down the road before you even get to the neighborhood there was a traffic jam. I did all my decorations myself and I thought they were just gorgeous and then when I saw everyone else's I felt like mine were puny😂 mine were also classier than the rest😊
I set up one small inflatable for the children, and I like that they don’t take up much space in storage. Plus, I love having a holiday Hello Kitty inflatable on display. That ginormous Santa was low-key terrifying though.
I never understood those huge blow ups and not a snow flake in sight. Huge Santa no snow. Huge snowman no snow. Blow ups should be environmentally appropriate. (If you absolutely have to have one) oh and should be yard size appropriate too. Kinda like having a sectional couch that’s so big it sits in your living room but hangs out in the dining area too because it’s so big. I don’t love them either Nick but I understand people having them with little kids.
I do not understand those inflatables at all because during the day when people are out at work or living their life, they are strewn across a yard like emptied trash bags. The neighbor of a family member used to have his yard blanketed in those things, there was no rhyme or reason, just an attempt to cram as much as possible in a fairly sizable yard.
@NickLewis Thank you so much! My family has had a rough few days with losing a relative and another one having a very close call, and this video made me laugh until there were tears rolling down my face. Thanks again for making us laugh. Have a wonderful holiday season!
Best thing about Christmas is that Red and Green (strong rich versions) are my favourite colours, so for a month I get to indulge without it being weird.
I just thought of the Christmas decor video we need. I would love to hear Nick comment on the holiday decor in Hallmark Christmas movies. They are so over-the-top.
I love love love the extreme lengths people go to to fill their house with Christmas. I see a lot of people on here say it’s tacky but if you go to someone’s house with every hall decked in holly and you don’t smile, there’s something wrong with you.
My mom in the 1960s (yeah, I'm old) made a wreath out of crumpled up dry cleaner bags with gold spray and red thingies. It was never great, but she kept bringing it out every year. No one else liked it but it became "tradition". Making stuff like that, or for kids, is fine, but they get really sad after a year or two. Gotta learn to let go! I agree on inflateables. Plus, they look so stupid lying on the ground during the day!
I turned 60 this year. A memory just surfaced after reading your comment. When very young, in elementary school, we made paper wreaths with macaroni & pasta shells glued on them and then painted them gold. I remember thinking they looked so cool. My mother--who was a spectacular professional fine art artist--let us enjoy it for that year. NEVER saw it again after that! 😂
Always love your humor Nick ! I, in the past, insisted on decorating my entire main floor of my house and enjoyed it until I have to put all that crap away again ... that was the painful part of it all, now I just place my 5 foot pencil tree in my living room, no furniture to move around ... it's great ! After Xmas I just place a bag over it and put in back in my garage, already decorated for the next year LOL No candles on it, that's my Christmas Miracle
For f...s sake XD A christmas tree is not flammable - it's practically a live tree! It'll first be dangerous to add candles to it if it's dried out (and then all the needles will have fallen out). The real danger is the christmas decor and wayward pets or children, but people who still use candles usually have a lot less decorations on the tree for this very reason (and makes sure to place the candles strategically to avoid any hazards), plus they probably only light it when it's time to walk around it and open presents, unlike the electrical lights that are typically left on for a lot longer. Personally I really like the idea of using real candles - it makes the moment feel special instead of the christmas tree being a static piece of decor.
I've collected nutcrackers since I was a young girl taking dance class and was in a performance of "The Nutcracker." My grandmother bought me a nutcracker doll for Christmas and I've added more throughout the years. 😁
I also think there's a huge difference between actually making the ugly toilet roll ornaments with your kids and buying one made in a sweatshop in China. It's less about the ornament, and more about the memory of spending time with your kids.

Hey Nick, I challenge you to decorate the exterior of your house for Christmas. Show us how it should be tastefully done.
Won't dox himself. Designers do use CAD, or at least drawings though, so that's a better option
Maybe ... almost not at all?
Just a thought. You don't NEED lights and lights and lights on your roof.
😂😂😂
Pausing from the beginning real quick to say that is STILL my favorite sweater! The marbled raspberry is an excellent color for you! (At least, that's the way the color appears on my phone)
The comment about baby Jesus needing some details😂😂😂
Warm cozy and colorful beats silver white and boring every year. You like it I love it😂😂😂
Growing up we had real candles on our tree. We had no tinsel! We only lit it up once and we lit it after dinner and blew them out while we were opening presents. My grandmother was European and it was for her.
On the candles
Up until the 19th century, candles were used for decorations on Christmas Trees 🌲.
You went to Hawaii without us? Wow, okay.
Here for a refreshing splash of reality and you did not disappoint. Love your videos!
Table top Christmas trees made from really thick telephone books. I made those as a kid.
OMG...I remember those!!! at the church bizarres!!!
@@bobcaygeon6799 Did you spell bazaar that way on purpose? If so, kudos!
So good! Thanks for the laughs. Agree with the comments regarding Elf on the Shelf…so creepy!
Nick, your Christmas decor/ roast videos are Evergreen! 😆 I watch them like 5 times over! And what was up with that 🌲 in Paris?! OMG! 😱 😅🤣 I can’t. Must of been a Bacchus theme, right? 🤭
This year my tree only gets white fairy lights and an unbreakable topper - no ornaments - because I have 2 furry terrorists ( cats ) that are sure to try their best to topple the tree 🎄
ikea sells nice unbreakable (recycled platic) ornaments
also great with kids 😅
I too have a pair of tiny terrors ( 5 months kittens), and my 2 adult fur balls. It must be unbreakable! I with you
Because of my cats, who love sitting under the tree, I always tie my tree to something (usually a curtain rod) with clear fishing line. It's saved many ornaments!
I don't like inflatable couches either but I am thinking if I ever see one at a thrift store I might buy it just to see the look on my cat's face the first time she starts clawing it.
😂
I am so glad someone else finds nutcrackers creepy 😂 They seem as if they will come alive at midnight, their eyes glowing red and they'll be going "ack ack ack, I'M GOING TO CRACK YOUR NUTS!"
love your videos because of your sense of humor, lol.. btw, I don't think I've ever heard you make fun of bean bag chairs - and they DESERVE it 😂
Back in 1967 bumming around Europe, my friend 😢Egels Bander , a Canadian, gave me a gift of a Xmas Santa dried apple decoration from Nuremberg Germany. Every year I would unpack it and tell the story of Egels. It lasted for at least 18 years when it finally passed away, much to the delight of my children who I forced to listen to the story.
I always love your videos but this one cracked me up. I love your humor!
You will love Glasgow at Christmas….try to get to Edinburgh too!! Hope you get to stay for Hogmanay
Call in and leave a greeting for your peeps.
@ ach aye 🤣
Yes I have trip to Edinburgh planned too!
As usual, love your assessment of the different Christmas themes. Your humor is unmatchable.
Oh my goodness, your videos always make my day, love your humor 😂😂😂😂😂
Please nobody explain the Paris Christmas tree! I love the idea that someone out there is so innocent and I don't want to ruin that!
I read what its called (in the comments), but I still don't get it.
@@pienana2004It is Google-able.
@@pienana2004 That's good. 🙂
Loved this Nick, your face was often priceless! Christmas has a gaudy aspect to it. I try to keep it classy but then I get excited when something with far too much glitter makes my heart sing. 😂
"the planet understands" bahahahahahaha! love it!
Stealing livers!!!😂😂😂 perfect description
Snoop Dogg has his own Christmas spy: Snoop On the Stoop. Not a joke.
I love them but it’s mostly because I adore the ballet so much!
The elf on the shelf is so creepy! Not the looks, the whole concept of telling kids they have a stalker that sees everything!
That Parisian Christmas Tree made me HOWL with laughter!
Where do people store all that stuff ?!?
Garage and attic.
I won't be surprised if some use storage units
I moved to Germany a few years ago and was shocked to see that they still sell christmas tree candle everywhere. Must still be a thing for a lot of people.
In Switzerland too and we love the candles on the tree❤
Same - live in Switzerland and a few friends say they have real candles in the tree to this day😱 but they did say they only light them for a short time at the beginning of the season 😂
Same in Denmark 🇩🇰🎄😉
This may be my favorite show yet.
Thanks for the laughs. Ermergerd 😂
Happy Thanksgiving, Nick
Faithful subscriber here. Having a rough time lately and this is just what I needed Thank you Nick for always being the best you!! ❤
I ❤ your channel. This is one of my favorite videos you've made.
I always wanted an aluminum tree like our neighbor had, but my old-fashioned parents insisted on chopping down a tree!😅
I set up one small inflatable for the children, and I like that they don’t take up much space in storage. Plus, I love having a holiday Hello Kitty inflatable on display. That ginormous Santa was low-key terrifying though.
The planet understands!😂
😂😂😂
I live for your sarcasm❤. Thank you Nick, this actually made me laugh out loud 🎄😂😂
I live in Edinburgh so I really hope you enjoy your Scottish Christmas and even better New Year.
Best thing about Christmas is that Red and Green (strong rich versions) are my favourite colours, so for a month I get to indulge without it being weird.
Red and green are complementary colors, so it's fine to wear them all year. I do!
I just thought of the Christmas decor video we need. I would love to hear Nick comment on the holiday decor in Hallmark Christmas movies. They are so over-the-top.
Love your kindness to the apartment people. 🎅🏽
Love your snarkey sense of humor🤣 (and your design sense, somerimes)
This was such a funny and joyous video! Also, love love love the green wall!
Lmaooo the first 5 seconds of ur snarky smirk kills me 😂😂😂😂
I love love love the extreme lengths people go to to fill their house with Christmas. I see a lot of people on here say it’s tacky but if you go to someone’s house with every hall decked in holly and you don’t smile, there’s something wrong with you.
Hilarious 😂😂😂😂 And your comments are the best part ❤
Your sweater looks great!
Just got back from Glasgow last week, you're going to love it!!!!
Yes, I really enjoyed this video. This is the first time I’ve laughed out loud since the election.
Love watching your videos Nick!
I never decorate. I'm sitting here laughing at the tree limb in bloom by your tv. Merry Christmas 🤶
The artist who designed the Paris "tree" had to be trolling. The design was too perfect.
yeah the artist was definitely aiming to cause a bit of chaos 😂
I know nothing about b*tt pl*gs but I'm guessing this is a learning moment ...
It’s Paris, of course they were trolling.
