Thank you so much for this. About to test my luck with a cricket farm. I live close to a big fishing spot and I’ve noticed more and more people are looking for crickets for their pets so let’s see how this goes. About to build this after I get the stuff.
Thank you for making this. Have you had success with having sustainable cricket farming this way? How long does it typically take to see new crickets from egg laying, to hatching?
you're welcome glad I could help. crickets are hard to keep alive at first sometimes but once they get established they'll keep reproducing. I would avoid getting them from bait shops
Should I make a farm and start selling at my local Pet shop and bait shop? Because this was helpful and they do $12 for 250 crickets and I have alot outside my home so I'll start one.
With the mesh, have you had any issues with ants getting inside, or is it pretty tight enough mesh to keep them out? I know ants like to go after cricket eggs and I'm trying to find a better solution for keeping crickets without this issue.
I've personally never had that experience with ants I guess it just depends on where you keep the crickets either inside or outside. Mine are inside in a basement
I saw you take the bin with the eggs and put a paper towel over the top, then close the top. Keep At 89 F for 8-10 days. Source: th-cam.com/video/6zp4rlkXyeU/w-d-xo.html
I just found a cricket in my house it’s winter so I don’t wanna set him out but I have no cricket for or carrots right now plus he has these little back ten tackles on the back of him and the middle one is missing can he live without it or no?
How do you harvest them? I find them jumping all over too much for me. I was thinking about a mesh but not sure what size do I can dump all out and sieve vermiculite through the hand made mesh/ sifter. Any thoughts?
Great question, really it's up to you but I generally just take out the top layer with a cat litter scoop about once a month until it time to refill it back up with more.
I have four currently. My best friend has about 16 lol but he has a bunch of different reptiles. I mainly just use them for fishing and snacks for my chickens
@@MattsFinds sounds good, Iv only had a couple fried ones so far. I’d like to try adding cricket flour into my doughs to increase nutrition. It would also be a good gateway food item to show people that they actually don’t taste bad at all.
They did welI i believe I still have some from the original batch (their babies babies babies) lol but I occasionally add a couple hundred every few months just because I use a lot for fishing
Some died most lived the cycle goes on. I now have 2 containers that are sustaining themselves. Perfect amount for selling crickets to the local fishermen
If anyone needs egg cartons go to your local breakfast dinner and ask if they have any. I get all of mine from waffle house so I don't literally have to buy eggs
I'm not sure hard to say without being able to see where you keep them stored, how you feed water them etc. I highly recommend buying young/baby eggs crickets instead of grown ones from a bait shop or pet store. Also try to find some in the wild.
How much free time do you have that you can pause a video and count the crickets on screen? And for what purpose? Just to “lol” and tell someone they got scammed? Seems rather sad, honestly.
@@MattsFinds not everyone lives in a hardware store. Not everyone owns cats also so that argument is invalid. Just saying.. this is an overly complicated solution lol. Some duct tape would have sufficed and kept a cat out just as easily lol. Fyi, cat will tear though that screen like a hot knife through butter.. your bolts ain't stopping shit lol.
Really appreciate you taking your time to make this video.
Glad I could help
Great tutorial. Simple and to the point. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Good luck glad I could help. Don't be discouraged and stick with it they'll eventually breed and keep producing.

Same question? how long till you have baby crickets? typically? and how many babies per cricket?
Same question? how long till you have baby crickets? typically? and how many babies per cricket?
Typically they breed in late summer into the fall. You could expect eggs at a minimum of 30 days
Very informative and straight to the point! Thank you!

This is awesome, i moved to the country and have one place to buy bugs and most the time they run out so this is soooo helpful thank you!!
Matt I just got 250 crickets 20 minutes ago.....I'm concerned ..how many can I put in one container
You really helped ,your video was perfect
Rick
I would split them up between two containers
This is really helpful! I plan on making one this weekend. Thank you!
Loved your tutorial man. straight to the point I'm a build one today!!!!!
Awesome and good luck with farm
Real good video
Spider Stone
Straight to the point and very creative. I’ll get this going soon hopefully
me and my dad made a cricket farm. this helped a shit ton. thanks bro!
Glad to help
finally! some frickin' common sense. THANK YOU.
Thank you for the tutorial I’m planning on building one
You're welcome and have fun making it
I might try it too
Nice video straight to the point.
Thanks I appreciate it
Got a baby bearded dragon that eats 20+ crickets a day.. damn expensive!
Very helpful tutorial :)
Awesome I started with 100 and lost some fast so I added another 100,after about 2 months they finally started breeding
Best tutorial I’ve seen so far. How did it wind up working out? Do you know if it would also work well for smaller crickets?
Thanks brother, yes it would work but I would recommend making a smaller separate bin for the smaller baby crickets.
Crickets are cannibals.
Nasty little fkers
Thanks dude i needed one of these because im getting a leopard gecko soon
Good setup. I'd say replace the top soil with something else. The crickets are dumb and eat the slow release fert out of it and die.
Can I use sawdust instead of vermiculite?
Please help
thank you so much for making this. very helpful video!
You're welcome
what is the recommanded minimum height of the container so the crickets won't jump and escape when the lid is open?
At minimum depth, 18-24 inches. The deeper the better though.
Awesome stuff!!!
Thanks Red Pill Scholar
Thank you!! Looking to raise crickets for my tarantula
you're welcome

Great video. I'm making one so I don't have to go to my local petstore everytime I need crickets to feed my lizards
awesome Hunter yeah those store crickets can get pricey
Would I need to incubate the eggs or keep them in a separate bin when they are planted into the soil

Can you use perlite if you can't find vermiculite?
I'd prefer not to because it gets really dry. You could try it and let us all know how it goes.
This is good and simple ,but how will they air. Is there any holes in their house so that air can enter.
Do you have to change vermiculite everytime or no ?
Once every six months is good practice
how often do you change the vermiculite & how do you change it
Great question, really it's up to you but I generally just take out the top layer with a cat litter scoop about once a month until it time to refill it back up with more.
Don’t know if you still reply to comments. Thanks for the video very very helpful. Does the vermiculite need to be changed? And if so how often?
Once a year should be plenty, if it really stinks maybe every 6 months
@@MattsFinds thank you sir 👍🏻
Do u need to incubate the soil where the crickets lay their eggs? & can I just leave this farm out in my backyard without no specific temperature?
Need to keep them in a cool dry location such as in a barn or basement
Do you have to use periculite?
I probably spelled that wrong
Vermiculite, they sell it at lowes and home depot for like 5 bucks a bag. But yes it's best to use the vermiculite
@@MattsFinds Ty
I use organic rice bran instead vermiculite. Do you think it is alright? Thank you
It should be, but I always stick to the recommended soil
What do you do whis a cricket farm
Fishing bait and reptile food
How many boxes you have now?
I have four currently. My best friend has about 16 lol but he has a bunch of different reptiles. I mainly just use them for fishing and snacks for my chickens
Great now i can start eating bugs!
protein is protein
Yes.. bait and pets and things …

I personally prefer chocolate covered ones

How many crickets do you have now? How do you keep it clean without them escaping?
I just put them in another container when I clean out the vermiculite. I have around 500 at the moment
Can I do my cricket farm in a ten gallon tank?
Great video
You sure can in my opinion that's even better just use a screened top like for a reptile tank
Ok thanks
Thanks!!!
You're welcome
can i use sawdust in substitute for vermiculite
Honestly I would stick to vermiculite because wood chips can cause mold especially in a moist environment
Did they breed? Did it work?
yes it started rough I lost about 20 but kept adding more until finally I had enough for a second container
What does this look like today? Did they thrive?
They did welI i believe I still have some from the original batch (their babies babies babies) lol but I occasionally add a couple hundred every few months just because I use a lot for fishing
Would a sponge work for water
yes it will work
@MattsFinds i know it's been a year but thanks
That's awesome glad to hear
How long does it take for them to reproduce?
Usually a month or two
Where are the results after the first breed? I am sure it never worked
Some died most lived the cycle goes on. I now have 2 containers that are sustaining themselves. Perfect amount for selling crickets to the local fishermen
Can you do styrofoam egg carton? Or just cardboard
Cardboard they dont like the styrofoam kind.
Oh ok thanks
No problem glad to help
To be honest I’m only using this for my bearded dragon
Awesome pets my friend has a couple
If anyone needs egg cartons go to your local breakfast dinner and ask if they have any. I get all of mine from waffle house so I don't literally have to buy eggs
that's a great tip Destiny thanks
Do the egg cartons have to be cardboard?
yes they love the moist damp environment
@@MattsFinds Thank you so much...I'm a 1st timer and awaiting my order of 500 crickets..I'm pretty stoked
Are you from Florida?
Close but no I'm not from Florida
Keep guessing
North Carolina
So close
@@MattsFinds South Carolina?
so you feed them what?
what is the easiest food and least expensive?
Fish flakes
You can use fruits and vegetables scraps, or dry cat and dog food also.
Thanks 🙏🏽 🤗

I saved a ton of money using what I had in my shop. Plus hot glue? Good idea until a cat or rat wants a cricket snack. They can easily rip it apart
