Barry was hip to the style of the day in the UK. It eventually made its way over here in the ‘60’s with poet shirts fir guys as well as these Russian peasant style guys shirts no real collar but where the buttons came across the solder on one side snd down the side of the front. One of the biographies on line about them said Barry was always the stylish one and just like Prince Valiant all he had to do was stand there snd people screamed with delight!🥰

Barry's fashion, it's called A Poet's Shirt. Wikepedia , A Poet Shirt (also known as a Pirate Shirt) is a type of shirt made as a loose-fitting blouse with full bishop sleeves, usually decorated with large frills on the front and on the cuffs. Typically, it has a laced-up V-neck opening, designed to pull over the head, but can have a full-length opening fastened by buttons. The collar may be standing or folded over with points. Fabrics commonly used in its manufacture include linen, cotton, satin and velvet, while frills may be of the same fabric or of lace. Originally intended as a male garment, it is also worn by women today (though still interchangeably referred to as both a "shirt" and a "blouse" regardless of which gender is wearing it)

First of all Chad did you small part while Barry was singing Robin was in the background playing guitar. Robin could play all kinds of instruments like his twin he was multi-talented. Second I wanted to touch on your thoughts on this video. I have been a hospice nurse for nearly 30 years. I had an old gentleman who had cancer and he reconciled with fact that he was dying soon. He had all his faculties so he was thinking rationally. He decided he wasn't going to leave a will but he was going to give everyone what he would've left them before he died. He said it would give him the joy he would miss after he passed. I loved this old guy. He used to like coloring in coloring books so I bought him some books and crayons for my next trip out to his house. Unfortunately he didn't last long so my visits were few but I don't think I'll ever meet someone like him. God bless him 🙏

I enjoyed your story about being a hospice nurse. I didn’t know where you were going with it at first, if the old gentleman was going to confess something he’d kept hidden all these years or what. I was happy when I read he only wanted to share his most prized possessions before he passed. Anyway, thank you for being present with and comforting people in their last days and hours. I’ve had family who’ve passed with hospice care helping them and our family and I really appreciate you and all the work that you do.

This is one of the songs done before the split. The final straw was when Barry's song "The first of May" was chosen as side A over Robin's "Lamplight" which was put on side B. It was a rough split, they said later on they broke up as boys and came back as men. We are very lucky as fans that they came back together and gave us many more years of legendary music.

Barry had said when Robin came to them and said he wanted to write a song about a man going to the chair Barry and Maurice were very reluctant to write such a song but Robin said wait it's also a love song, Barry has said Robin always loved the really sad song because they lent themselves to his voice, it was pretty brave to write a song like this in the 60s. Of course they first charted in England with New York Mining Disaster so they weren't afraid to explore sad subjects. Their first number one (which was in Australia) Spicks and Specks was a much more conventional song for the time, they found out it had reached number one when they were on the ship back to England

It is a beautifully crafted song, but I remember when it came out and I was in elementary school, it gave me the heebie geebies. I couldn't handle the thought of the subject matter. Still have a hard time, the but the chorus can definitely pull you in. The build of the song and the choral harmonies grab you. Another comment said it conveyed desperation. I agree. And these were kids! Robin and Mo were still teenagers. Oh, and Mr. Chad. this is the utmost in English fashion. (definitely not your Jerry Seinfeld puffy shirt). Barry looked just perfect.

    • @dp3396
      @dp3396 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

It is said of all FOUR brothers and THEIR FATHER, that they could all play any instrument by ear without lessons. Maurice was the most gifted and accomplished with strings and keyboards, pretty much able to play at studio musician level, and was a natural at instantly arranging what Robin and Barry wrote. Barry played guitar in an open D style tuning, which is easier, so easier for him to do and sing live in concert at the same time. Robin pretty much surrendered playing instruments in concerts, because it’s too difficult to do well and concentrate on his vocals at the same time. He also stopped playing in the studio after they had the budget and got better results from Maurice or others. His real loves were writing lyrics and vocals. It is undisputed that his unique voice was his best instrument, so where he invested time towards perfecting. I find it interesting that his twin was the opposite, even know to dislike writing lyrics outside of in a team, and put his time into perfecting strings and keyboards. Put them together with Barry and you had a magical, unbeatable mix if musical genius.

Love your enthusiasm and reaction. Next time you watch the video....notice Robin' starts out singing without an instrument....
then Barry starts singing and he doesn't have his guitar but if you
watch... you'll see that Robin is playing Barry's guitar...then it switches to , Robin again and he
doesn't have the guitar....Barry is playing the guitar again. A lot of people don't notice that.

Chad, what a great reaction to one of their most beloved songs. For your own enjoyment check out one of their live performances for this classic. They performed it at all their concerts but I suggest the 1974 Melbourne concert for starters. This performance is most like the video you just reacted to (about 3 minues long). Then fast forward to their 1989 Melbourne concert and 1997 "One Night Only" Vegas concert. These two performances were about a minute longer and very different from the original studio recording and video you reacted to. Barry added ad-lib falsettos but there definitely was one constant in all three of my suggestions. That would be the great Alan Kendall playing those wonderful leads on guitar that he was famous for! I'm really looking forward to what you'll be reacting to for our next marathon song!

Additional band-members these days were Colin Peterson on drums and Vince Meloney on lead-guitar, really great musicians. The rythm-section they built together with Maurice on bass and Barry on acoustic-guitar was great! On this one, you can hear Vince, doin' solos nearly complete thru' the whole song. And then Mo, with his phantastic work on bass! Phenomenal, so just check them out with the titlesong of their album 'Idea', same time, same station.

@@francisxray9900 - Glad you're getting your vaccine. As an ex nurse, I don't get these antivaxxers. I'm old enough to have lost cousins to polio and two other cousins became paraplegics. A friend developed measles encephalitis and had to relearn walking and talking. Lost a lot of IQ points. I ask such people why we don't have polio and smallpox any more? DUH!
Years ago when I travelled to Africa and Asia I needed a vaccine passport. It protected me and them. If people don't have one they should be prohibited from travel, concerts and other events. Maybe then they would wake up.......I digress!
Loved Mo's bass playing. He almost used a slap technique at times, a lot of downstroke which really wasn't that prominent in rock in those days. Obviously self taught. Used to love people like Mark King! Bass is so undervalued. I think that is because a lot of good bassists are subtle and not flashy. Fast and loud does not equate to a good bass line, maybe John Entwistle being an exception.
I enjoy Chad. He seems so natural and real. Enjoy his facial expressions and giggle.

@@susieq9801 Yes, vaccine! And I'll tellya one thing: These days we don't need to go to the zoo, so apes are everywhere, in shapes of antivaxxers or corona-deniers. And so we both are musicians on our own, it's clear for us listening to music in a specific way. To me, Maurice had always much meaning, so he's been such a great bass- and keyboardplayer, also in early Australian-days sologuitarrist. And like me, he played sometimes on twelvestring-acousticguitar as well. Not to forget his voice, minor used in leadvocals but his contributions to their three-part-harmony was priceless. He lived music so distincteve. BTW, John Entwistle, saw him twotimes live in concert with The Who, great man, great bass-player! Stay well, too.

thanks, Chad - Robin is "my guy" in the Bee Gees - most unique voice, sense of humor, etc. Maurice also totally under-rated - same things -- Barry is obviously the big brother and leader, and super-talented... hard to separate the three -- sadly, that happened without our choice... gotta say on this video, as with some of the other early ones, costumes are hilarious -- Barry looks like a "mutton-chop matador" -- also see one of my other favorite Robin features -- "I started a Joke" -- original video is just bizarre - later live is okay, but not flattering to the aging guys... th-cam.com/video/jrg1UAixGaM/w-d-xo.html -- I just have almost never heard voices as beautiful and unique as Robin -- (okay, leave Freddie Mercury out of it, b/c - GOAT)

It surprises me when people say, "Oh, Robin playing (or faking) guitar". He played several instruments including keys but his preference was singing and composing, the opposite of Mo who loved playing. In particular Mo's bass work (his idol was McCartney) is outstanding and seldom given its due. The bassist in any band is so often overlooked but is the anchor for any song. Robin composed on organ, piano or acoustic guitar and played those instruments on his early solo album, ""Robin's Reign" and a few early videos show him playing piano or organ. His wife said she would often hear him in the middle of the night playing piano and singing and it was angelic especially in the setting of their 800 year old monastery home.
Yes, that harmonizing @3:23 does have Robin's vibrato.
Laughed at your "Hi Robin". :)
PS - Where's your hat? When doing the Bee Gees, being British, you should buy yourself a "deerstalker" a la Sherlock Holmes.
    All the best!
