I was bending 1/4" thick x 1" flat aluminum bar today. I didn't know about the candle soot trick, but I was heating it with a propane torch until the dull aluminum got shiny. I bent it around 3/4" steel bar while hot. Luckily it didn't break like it did when I tried to do a tighter radius bend.

You use common bar soap to use as a heat reference. When it turns black you got it hot enough.
