I don’t think that’s correct. I thought 1 Koku was equal to the amount of rice needed to feed a samurai and his immediate dependants for a year. That’s why in the book he is given 200 samurai of his own to command and support.
Since a Damyo can be best compared to a very highborn Lord, they are member of a the "nobility". So they never truly run out of money, as long as they have a name on them, with land, titles and men they will always have some sort of "credit" so to speak. financial debth was not treated like today and money didn't have the same value. If you had very high financial debts as a Lord, particularly to someone who had no real "name", what could they do? They couldn't really "force" you to pay it back. Their lands, the troops and peasants have been theirs by "birthright" not something they "bought". So who ever borowed them money couldn't just declare it theirs as payment. Particularly if they had no military power. Debth in money, was not enough of a claim in most cases to seize the land of some nobility. Only a higher lord, eventually, could take it away from them. But that by it self, was pretty risky. Particularly since personal soldiers and troops have been bound by oaths, loyalty and honor. They could see it as an insult or even an attack on their master. It was a complex society in that regard not so much bound by laws but allegiances. A lot of lords refuced to pay back their debts which eventually ended up in debtors supporting a rival with money. Infact, like when you look at the Medici, they gladly gave money to kings and the higher nobility even if they knew, they could never get it back. Because in exchange they got "favours" and "rights", like on trading, mines, cultivating land or just the influence of someone, speaking for them in political matters, supporting them with troops even in some cases. That was far more valuable than money in a time when your name alone, could "buy" you a lot of influence.
