My PS3 slim had this issue. However, mine was an original PS3 slim from 2009 (the one with glowing buttons). This model did not have the hole in the metal shield like you see in the video. In the end I took out the motherboard, took a piece of rolled up kitchen roll and sellotaped it onto the bottom of the motherboard in the place I saw you put your piece of (something) in the video. After reassembling it all, I was amazed to find it worked. So it works on older models too! Massive thanks to you for finding and showing this fix :)
UPDATE it works so you can get vital stuff out of the ps3 and deactivate the system from PSN. Not a viable long term fix, a complete reflow of the system is needed for that.
@@epeksergastis Its great to hear my fix worked for others too. I still have that PS3 (still with that same piece of kitchen roll wedged in it lol) and it still works, although I've rarely used it after that fix so can't say if it'd stand up to heavy use.
I had a PS3 with the same problem and had it all tore apart so I could look over the motherboard for problems. After watching this I did a bench test without the top half of the metal shell and it ran fine for an hour before I finally shut it off. Not sure how you figured this out, but kudos.

+Elatia Manion care to share?? how the hell did u take it apart. my super slim ps3, requires almost star looking screws and i def dont have that screw driver, sony is a douche
What this looks like to me: You are flexing the board and it is completing a contact. This would make me believe that you might have a cold solder joint (bad solder) on one of the parts on that board. If you had A LOT time to kill you could touch up every component (if you have a soldering iron). If that's the problem then you would fix it forever.
Holy crap its actually working. I have replaced so much crap and have been working on it for a damn year and this works. I mean really? That's awesome. I think I owe you money man. Gees. I just bundled some electrical tape and stuffed in under mine.
I think the lifting of the board has caused an open circuit to close again. My best guess would be that the solder in a connection is bad from the factory because it is lead free. although it may seem like a bunch of crap as a fix it could be a better than trying to re-solder microcircuits. Trying to re solder a small circuit would probably end in disaster for all who attempt it. If this doesn't work for you it is because you have a different problem or you open circuit it worse.
Well that worked for me, seriously, I'd tried literally everything and that fixed it. Any idea what the cause is? Guessing it's some kind of short given this video's solution.
+spawn trap Dude, thanks for the tip. I tried everything but I also took the ps3 apart and cleaned it completely and then tried and it did the same thing then I did this with the half peg and wiped my hard drive as well as updated software and everything ... works so far , sometimes the hardest questions have the simplest answers 😬 so happy thank you for trying this and.helping us.
This surprisingly fixed my PS3. I tried adjusting the potentiometers in the PSU like I'd read elsewhere and still nothing. That made me think I should just buy another supply. Then before I re-assembled it, I tried this for shits and giggles and it worked. After putting it all back together, it failed again, but I think I got it in sturdy enough to hold for now. I'm playing just fine now. This is a major manufacturing flaw or something for it to have affected this many people. I thought the slim models were designed better than the fat ones, but it looks like all Sony products have poor QC when it comes to design.
@@DaUniqueFamilyI kinda wanna try it but im worried i might break something where is that part in the ps3 u shoved it in, did u take the blue ray disc reader or something off to expose this part?

Recently my PS3 slim started having same issue. so i did the same thing like others here did, pus PS3 upside down and turned it on, working well so far..
I suspect you were having a problem with the CPU or GPU contacting the heat sink, which is under that fan. Shoving something under may have forced more contact between the CPU or GPU and allowed for better heat transfer. The thermal paste in between the two can degrade over time. It could also have resulted from the chip warping over time. So this solution may work, but it's not a long-term solution and it's potentially hazardous. I wouldn't want flammable paper in contact with electricity.
I'm not saying to listen to me,I'm saying I got my ps3 to turn on and it still running.all I did was lift up the motherboard and put something the size of a ps3 button to keep mboard up I tried and it worked so I thought I'll post on TH-cam cause none of u idiots did or tryed to.

No one replaces thermal paste, its to dry, ps3 turns off for security reasons exactly how my laptop done before, replace thermal paste for better solution, if that doesn’t work its a fuse in the power supply that needs a adjustment or replacement. This works, but the reason it works is by adding a little more pressure between GPU and the heatsink. This is usually because the heatsink clamps have lost some of their clamping pressure. The cpu and GPU have their own clamps and later versions use a metal that bends too easily. Take these out and bend them slightly so they can apply a bit more clamping force. Likely it is broken solder joints of a major chip connected to the main board. The pressure put on it makes the pins touch the connections. I had a camera that did the same thing ,when you squeezed it then it would turn on . I suspect these manufacturers know they are building these things to fail after a certain amount of time. Think about that for awhile before you buy their garbage again.

Thas what this video is for, When there is no light if you press the power button agian the red light will reappear, I've jus been taking the game out to turn the PS3 on putting it back in and sometimes that works or I keep trynna boot it up normal with power but or controller an unplugging it everytime it fails to start up an eventually it starts up right an works good.. I'ma try this solution tomorrow tho an hopefully it'll make it to where I don't have to do all that^^^^
open the whole thing up and tighten the scewes to the processor and throw away that crap, what your doing is pushing the mother board down this means the processor and the board squeeze together and the heat off the processor stays cool. i jailbreak ps3 daily open 50+ trust me i no wat am sayin
live4days u cqan get the disk out using a emergency method.- unplug the ps3. then hold the eject button while u plug it back in, the fan will go really loud, it will stay on, then press eject.
I washed my ps3 and messed up the ribben cable. it wioud beep when i hit the eject botton .I filed the ribben and I still got the beep. is there a fix. no lights just a beep.
Bossman.. my playstation 3 turns off like that but when I restart it, menu comes on like it's been turned off wrong, restarts but won't play games for long but it to play netflix all night long??
this worked for about 10-15 mins but then turned off again and its because i tried plugging my usb remote and couldn't because the board is lifted any fix for this?
I just used a disk to turn it on. Fan test a couple of times then used a game cd 💿 to make the light come on from red to blue. It cut off immediately the first time then after the third of fourth time trying to make it come with the cd it stayed on

I guess this is the end…. After 11+ years my ps3 officially died. I turn it on and 10-15 seconds later it completely shuts off. The light and everything is off even when it’s plugged in. So I have to unplug and replug it back for the light to come on.
I'ma try this solution tomorrow tho an hopefully it'll make it to where I don't have to do all that^^^^
I hit it and the picture doesnt come in it stays on for like 10 srconds and then shuts off completely
open the whole thing up and tighten the scewes to the processor and throw away that crap, what your doing is pushing the mother board down this means the processor and the board squeeze together and the heat off the processor stays cool.

I have the same problem
I just used a disk to turn it on. Fan test a couple of times then used a game cd 💿 to make the light come on from red to blue. It cut off immediately the first time then after the third of fourth time trying to make it come with the cd it stayed on
