Mike, I am a veteran Sheriffs detective in a large border town in Texas, working the gang problem. The pistol is, of course, our primary firearm in this role. While I have been using a very similar grip as you’ve so beautifully described for many years, I’ve learned much from you in a mere 30 minute video. Moreover, I will now be able to explain better to my favorite recreational shooting partner how to apply a proper grip to a handgun for combative purposes. This partner is my college age son who wants to join a federal law enforcement agency. Thank you, sir.
As someone with less experience, having spent hours looking at basics and safety.. Thank you Mike for giving me a solid ROI on my 30 minutes watching this video. I will watch it several times to get the muscle memory needed. Stay safe and healthy sir!

Mike, I'm an old guy who learned more from this presentation than I have during a day long class. Love your teaching techniques. Keep doing what you're doing, Man!
When I was new to shooting I would basically grip the gun with the same hand I was pulling the trigger with and my left hand would just be there dead fishing it. Ever since I heard the advice from Lenny Magill of your firm grip should be the opposite hand you pull the trigger with, my grouping and rate of fire has improved exponentially. I complained about Glock sights and bought a brand new gun before researching what I was doing wrong. Now I know that I was tugging the trigger so that my groups would be to the left even while taking 10 seconds to shoot and swearing I was right on target.
I'm not a regular hand gun shooter. I respond well to your explanation. This technique is what I've been looking for of how to grip a hand gun. First time watcher, this is awesome stuff! Started shooting handguns about 3 years ago and of all the training that I've had this is some of the best explanation on pistol grip that I've seen thanks for this.
Great video, I have been serving in the U.S. Army infantry for over 3 years now. I recently moved to a state that allows me to conceal carry. I used this grip technique while shooting my new Glock 45 and landed 14 out of 17 shots in a hand sized grouping. Thank you Mike for putting out great content and thank you for your service!
This is the best handgun grip video I have found. This helped improve my targeting. The grip does feel weird at the beginning because it is an unusual position for my body, but you have to get used to holding the weapon properly. This leads to better accuracy when shooting. Better grip and better support provide better control.

I have changed my grip because of this video. My accuracy has improved ten fold! Thanks Mike!!! I had to come back to this video and tell you thanks... Most valuable training I've ever been given.
Us "new guys" really really really REALLY, appreciate the good teachers/instructors. Your passion and will to have me understand this is mesmerizing. I'll have to watch this video 5 times just to be sure I've absorbed half the information. Not because I can't understand it, but because I don't want to miss a nuance. Subscribed.
Thanks Mike!! I am left handed and this helped a lot with my grip. My first pistol is a glock 43 and it feels good in my small hands. I can definitely work on the drills you provide. My new pistol is a full size cz 75 sp01 and first time on the range a had a few jams because I didn't have a good grip. I will practice your drills on it too. I carry the glock and feeling more confident because praticing with the cz is making my wrists stronger.
Occam's Razor. I've watched a portion of this video before and turned it off because, "I already know how to hold and shoot a pistol properly." I shoot often and consider myself to be an above average shooter but am never satisfied because of inconsistencies that occur not because of my firearm but because of my grip; new trigger, new sights, stippling, match barrel, etc, etc, etc. It improved my groups some but the same inconsistency here and there never went away. I always thought it was because of improper or inconsistent trigger pull but no adjustment ever fixed the problem. This popped back up on my recommended videos and I noticed I never finished it so I started it back and watched the whole thing. I figured out that my problem was two things, one, gripping too tight with my dominant hand and, two, improper bend/support with my left elbow. Long story short, you never know it all and you can always improve. Going back to the basics is often the simplest and most direct solution to a lot of problems.
Mike that is a great lesson on the grip. I always like to hear you explain how its suppose to work you always make it so simple but effective....thanks man and stay safe out there 👍🇺🇸
Without a doubt, I found your teaching the easiest to understand of anyone on YT. I used to do a lot of shooting when I was younger, but using Revolvers. Pistols are different. I just recently bought a Glock 19X, but haven't had an opportunity to live fire. Ammo is scarce & I have a standing order of 500 rounds due to ship mid-March. Meanwhile, I'll do Dry fire drills, until my ammo arrives. Thanks for sharing this info!
@@Stoicexpression in American culture we look people in the eye and give a firm handshake. Yeah it is aggressive; that's what manhood is about. Every encounter is initially about sizing each other up regardless of the situation. Experience guides it the rest of the way: such as 'this is a person I may be able to trust', 'this is a complete shitbag and I need to keep eyes on him'. Obviously when in other countries you might adhere to the local culture or you may choose to be full 'murica. Personally, I'm gonna give a good handshake no matter where the hell i am. Just don't shake with your left hand and you're golden.
Serious question about the thumbs forward grip technique. I know the video suggests keeping your shooting hand thumb pressed down on your support hand, but how do you ensure that you won't have the slide rake across the back of your thumb when it cycles? I've seen a lot of former operators post videos on this particular technique, but none addressed that portion of it. Thanks
Chris Nichols I had the same question and hope to get an answer!! I’m not 100% sure what to do with my support thumb during firing either! Ride the slide, can I keep it on a small frame and not on large slide? Please reply if you get any new info and I’ll do the same!
Finally, someone explains proper pistol grip. I have seen many on TH-cam "explain" how to hold your gun. Most allow way too much to interpretation. Some are downright bewildering (ie: "don't grip your handgun tightly, just press on the sides of the grip until you start shaking" huh??) Your instructions are easy to understand and easy to follow. Thank you!
This is what I miss about instruction in the military. All your questions get answered during the instruction. Not just the basic questions but random miniscule implementation questions are also addressed and demonstrated in a practical manner. Thanks for the no fluff, quality content.
Something about Mike that makes his comms very clear and easy to understand. He goes slow, reiterates special points, and is very authentic. Revisiting the fundamentals with Mike was much needed. Been off the gun too long. Hittin' the range SOON. Thx Mike!
The explanation of each step was awesome and the additional info, fantastic. I didn’t know someone could be so detailed about holding a gun. I watched a TH-cam video a while back and have been trying to find it. I guy was speaking and a woman demonstrating. Don’t need to find or watch that one, your video does it for me. I am preparing to buy a handgun and I already have a concealed carry license. Just watching as many videos as I can. I also plan to take more courses. I served in the Army. Great job.
@@davidelkins9894 So true. When I go to the range I always review some of the basics from Mike's instructional videos. He's coming to Washington for a meetup, but it's sold out. Wish I could go...several classes are going to held.
Some advice...take or leave it.... 1. Dry fire practice at least 5x more than rounds you shoot. 2. Practice with purpose. 3. If you are totally new, pay for some good training, it's worth it. 4. Guns, gear and being able to shoot are the small part of defense. Spend time and money developing situational awareness, mindset, shoot/dont shoot, self defense law, tactics. Just being able to shoot won't likely be enough. Thankfully, there are tons of videos and tons of people training these days!
Mr Glover, Awesome video! I'm 60 with prosthetic knees. My days of running in to provide life saving intervention are over. That is why I value the ability to send life saving energy into a situation with accuracy. That is the value I am convinced you add. That value is priceless. Thank you!
Wow I’m 40 n been shooting handgun since age 6 n have continued , I have learned more about grip from this then in last 19years since Iv been EDC . Thank you
Mike, this is the best presentation of how to grip a handgun I’ve seen. I’ve been a shooter for many years and your video has driven me back to correct my grip. Thank you.
Good stuff. I’m 34 year old vet and recently got my concealed carry permit. Anyway I just wanted to thank you for the good content. I can be somewhat of a perfectionist with the things I do choose to fill my time with. Thanks again for the detail and quality of the content.
Always love watching Glover. I’ve only been shooting for 3 years and only now going to a class at Sig. There’s something about mastering the basics and fundamentals of anything you do
Very Very informative. I've had guns over my 46 years of life but I've never really learned a proper grip. Recently I've purchased a firearm online and want to grip it right to mitigate recoil so I came to the guy I knew could teach me a proper grip and I'm so glad I did. Thank you for making this video. Very impressed. Thank you again.
Great technique. You make it easier to understand, without being too technical. My wife is a beginner and grasped the concept fairly fast. Outstanding work, thank you very much.
This is by far the best explanation of gripping a handgun I've ever heard. I was always taught "squeeze rearward with the dominant, horizontal with the support" which never really made sense because I never knew exactly how to squeeze it horizontally without losing my grip throughout the shot sequence. Simply saying "your support thumb shouldn't leave the frame when it recoils" just made that light bulb go off as to where and how to apply pressure.
29:15 I’m glad none of your instructors had to correct me with my grips on my handgun. Took a pistol course 1 in Ceres on December 2020 and I enjoyed it. Watched a lot of videos of yours and Raul about pistol grip so I wouldn’t look like a novice when I showed up. Can’t wait for pistol class 2
Thanks for a 'new' proper way to hold my handgun. I have seen in the last 4 years a degradation of my pistol accuracy and I was still using my old Military Training of palming the butt of the pistol for support as was taught during the Vietnam Era. Back then I had the wrist strength to stop the "limp wrist". Watching your videos has helped me improve my accuracy and once again be a better and more confident shooter.
The best out there. This is not only the best explanation on grip that ive seen but also how to get the pistol out there in an exercise format to build muscle memory. Its made me better but also showed me how to teach my son.in the best possible way so that he doesnt make the common mistakes that I have.
Mike I want to thank you for the very detailed and 100% complete theory and explanation of why and how to become better from the start of just starting with the grip. I will repeat this how to, not once not twice but every day to get it right. Much repedt Tim P
By far the best video I've seen on gripping a firearm properly. Very thorough and extremely helpful. Will definitely be watching this again and practicing. Thank you!!
For a beginner this is a lot of information to download. For the more intermediate, this makes a lot of sense or for someone who hasn’t shot in a while. Going back to the basic fundamentals is always good. Hand gun shooting is a highly highly perishable skill. I haven’t shot in almost 2 years and before that i was going to the range every other week. I’m glad that i know all the basic fundamentals of shooting a gun. Best advice i can give is learn to shoot with both eyes open! It’s so tempting to close one and shoot. I call it my $1000 lesson because i bought over 500 rounds to relearn just to shoot with both eyes open.
I have watched and listen so many videos about pistol gripping but not so much clear, comprehensive and all elements without remaining anything. A lot of thanks.
Thanks for taking the time to show us the correct way to hold a handgun. I was at the gun range this weekend and the range-master noticed my gun was not ejecting the shells correctly, he told me the same thing you said in this video. thanks for the teaching and going into it a little more in depth.

Subscribed. I’ve watched other vids and nothing I’ve seen personally is as detailed as this one... Going to practice now...
Me too
As someone who has never seen anyone famous that I would care to meet,I would love to just quitely sit and listen to mike talk
Sitting in my kitchen on a footstool with my coffee and doing THREAT THREAT THREAT. Getting ready to share this video!!
Subscribed.
He is thorough because you "Need" to know this.
Watch it 100 times.
Go practice.
I always like to hear you explain how its suppose to work you always make it so simple but effective....thanks man and stay safe out there 👍🇺🇸
Wow, served 23yrs never ever had the explanation delivered this effectively. Thank you!
Thank you sir for the amazing service ..definitely a great class 👏I am so grateful for your help keep up the awesome videos..and stay safe sir..
My father taught me the same thing - Never trust a man who won't look you in the eye & doesn't have a firm handshake. Wise words.
Is some culture making eye contact and firm handshake can be act as agression
@@Stoicexpression Did that culture land men on the moon?
@@HSKFabrications no but neither did U.S
@@Stoicexpression Yeah, we did. You can literally see the LEM on the surface with a telescope. It's ok, nobody's perfect.
Very well done, Sir. Actually should say. "professional". No stumbles or dead time in your presentation. Best of all, very helpful for this 80 + gent!
Another awesome lesson from a former "Pinelander" good stuff SGM!
Always good for a civilian to review grip again and again, especially from one of the best soldiers to ever walk the earth. THANK YOU!
Please reply if you get any new info and I’ll do the same!
you shooting thumb should rest gently at the base of the support thumb.
Thank you!
I never realized how bad my grip was. I'll be watching this a few more times im sure
This is what I miss about instruction in the military. All your questions get answered during the instruction. Not just the basic questions but random miniscule implementation questions are also addressed and demonstrated in a practical manner. Thanks for the no fluff, quality content.
If you want to learn, learn as a child.
Even when you're an Old Dog. Stay young in heart & soul.
Something about Mike that makes his comms very clear and easy to understand. He goes slow, reiterates special points, and is very authentic. Revisiting the fundamentals with Mike was much needed. Been off the gun too long. Hittin' the range SOON. Thx Mike!
30 dislikes? Damn some people don't even know how to grip the mouse right
Haha good one
The explanation of each step was awesome and the additional info, fantastic. I didn’t know someone could be so detailed about holding a gun. I watched a TH-cam video a while back and have been trying to find it. I guy was speaking and a woman demonstrating. Don’t need to find or watch that one, your video does it for me. I am preparing to buy a handgun and I already have a concealed carry license. Just watching as many videos as I can. I also plan to take more courses. I served in the Army. Great job.
Oh, he refered to his other hand as his other strong hand.
Fluent, accurate, precise vocabulary makes for a true description . Well done, sir.
God that tri-11 costs more than I could spend on guns and training in a whole year lol
Still want one though.
I'll take training with Mike first.
Then I'll sort out the Triarc.
This was VERY informative! Thank you for being thorough in your explanation.
new gun owner...the intense insanity of the world is forcing me to learn all I can about how to operate a weapon system...
Welcome to the down and dirty world. I'm glad you are seeking knowledge and advice from experts.
You have come to the right place. 👍
@@MrKimberr Having a family I love is THE motivating factor. So much to learn. One step at a time.
Mr Glover,
Awesome video! I'm 60 with prosthetic knees. My days of running in to provide life saving intervention are over. That is why I value the ability to send life saving energy into a situation with accuracy. That is the value I am convinced you add. That value is priceless. Thank you!
Who the hell thumbs down any of his videos?
Morons who need to take one of his classes. Probably holds their handgun in the "Westside" side grip
Probably one of those limp wristed folks lol.
@gravydogg1 I was just going to post the same thing. Nothing wrong with this video. A little advanced for free material. 😉
Figs
This is the best ABC,123 Grip instructions I’ve ever seen. I love that you can troubleshoot it easily. Excellent thank you.
Ive never even thought about like 80% of the things gone over in this video. Thinking about it all know, it all makes perfect sense. Great advice.
Mike Glover- complete bad ass, hero, and neologist. Great video.
I've seen a lot of these videos over the years and this is by far the best one I've seen. Things are explained well but still stupid simple.
These videos are an incredible public service, Mike. Thanks for doing these. You’re a great American.
WOW!! That was by far one of if not THE best explanatory videos I have seen!!! Great trainer, no doubt!!! Thank you
If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough. Great job Mike!!!! Easy to understand and follow. Thank you!!
@Mike Glover Actual this is by far the best explanation on proper grip I’ve come across. Thanks for the details on how to properly grip a firearm.
Great technique. You make it easier to understand, without being too technical. My wife is a beginner and grasped the concept fairly fast. Outstanding work, thank you very much.
Everyone starting out on pistols should watch this video, it helped me control recoil greatly, even after shooting pistols for years. Good stuff Mike!
This is the most detailed explanation of proper grip I've found on TH-cam. Thanks Mike.
This completely makes sense. I thought my grip was pretty good, but now see how it is not quite right. Thanks for breaking this down! Good stuff!
Brand new gun owner here and this is my first time I’ve ever heard of you. Just want to say thank you for the thorough video I don’t think I could have found a better one explaining all of this.
Thanks Mike. Simple, repeatable, fundamental. Outstanding.
I've seen lot of TH-camrs preaching about gun fundamentals but I've never ever seen a TH-camr talking about grip and grip only for 30 minutes.. and I watch the whole thing!!! 👍👍👍
