    As a follow up to this video, it would be nice for you to go into detail about hallmarks of a quality tie. More specifically, I am currently looking for a knit tie to wear on less formal occasions so your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    I too gravitated towards "louder" ties when I was younger, though I eventually got rid of most of them and settled on darker, more subdued patterns. Ironically, I still have two of my ties from when I first started collecting - a couple of cheap Enro ties that I got suckered into buying from a huckster who resold older Boss suits at marked-up prices. When I wore one (a bright red piece) to a (Canadian) election party, I not only nabbed an interview with a newspaper, but got a date with the most beautiful woman in the room.
    It's all about circumstance and style. What doesn't work in one situation may do wonders in another.

    Grenadine tie is a great option to have in one's wardrobe. It doesn't scream for attention yet it gives off a sophisticated and nonchalant vibe. As I matured I too found myself playing with texture while sticking to proven color schemes. I own two such ties (silver-ish and burgundy) and they work especially well for festive events. Thank you for mentioning ancient madder, I wasn't aware of this style even though the patterns look a bit too busy for my taste.

    Kirby, another fantastic video. I couldn't agree with your tie selection. Though I have over 50 ties, most of them are too wide (better suited for double brested suits) and from turn of century and these days, been enjoying more simple ties. Though I enjoy wearing Santa and Reindeer from Jerry Garcia for kids Christmas events. Thank you for another great video! Burgundy Granedene tie, I've been wanting one for quite some time and will request my wife to purchase one from your website for father's day. Thank you again.

    Hello Kirby
    Great tie collection! I have an on/off obsession with ties and during my college years I bought a lot of amazing ties from Versace, Hermes and Lacroix. Alas I didn’t store them properly so after a decade I find some have creases where they were folded etc. once after dry cleaning one silk tie it was ruined so I’m hesitant to try again. Any hacks or special products to use in order to get the creases out of a fine silk tie? Thank you

    Such a long-awaited video, beautiful ties, and you look fascinating. ☺️ I like ties, and sometimes will wear them myself, with a jacket and white shirt (which makes me, a woman, look a bit edgy). Too bad men in my country gravitate towards not wearing ties anymore, except for very formal occasions. I have to set a benchmark myself, hahaha. 😉
    Thank you for another great video! Cheers!

    Great video. From several of the other comments, it looks like many of us have followed similar evolutions in our tie-buying habits. I initially favoured bold red striped ties, these days solid or Macclesfield/polka dot/pin dot navy or burgundy ties. I think it's a shame that many men who feel forced to wear ties, rather than because they wish too, choose very garish colours and patterns because they don't want to look old-fashioned and stodgy.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I couldn't agree more - the older I get, but more I come to appreciate the elegance of more reserved ties. I look at some of the early ties in my closet, and I'd never wear them today -- too bright, bold, and garish!

    I also love the first green and dark red tie, I have the " "same" " and I use them all the times. I like dark green, as I have green eyes and kind of green undertone in my skin, but it is hard to find ties without hunting motives.
    I have one small patern black/"white" and I tought about giving it away. But I tryied it with a beige sports jacket, white shirt and it worked out way better than I tought.

    Speaking of ties, what kind of tie knot are you using in this video? Looks like an old bertie but I am really not sure. Also, how do you have it to look so “long”? Is that the wodth of the narrower of your tie that is wider than the normal?
    Keep up the good work. Your videos are always very well done and informative.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow. It is in fact the Old Bertie. Nobody has ever been able to call that! It ties slightly longer in the back... I should probably be using a Prince Albert or something to shorten the end, but it's an easy knot that I find I am able to tie quite easily.
      I'm not sure what you mean by the tie looking so "long." All of our ties are a normal 3.25 width... so rather moderate; neither wide nor narrow.

    • @Antroz59Mc
      @Antroz59Mc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Kirby, excellent video. I have just invested in my first pair of Allen Edmond's as per you recommendation for a first quality dress shoe. As these are my first high quality shoe and will be seeing very regular use, until I acquire a second pair, is there anything other than shoe trees and regular polishing I can do to help maintain them under heavy usage?

    • @ramanshah7627
      @ramanshah7627 ปีที่แล้ว

      Forgive the necropost. I encourage you rotate them so that you don’t wear them on consecutive days, to give the leather a chance to breathe out the moisture. Use a leather conditioner like Saphir Renovateur occasionally. (After a decade, my first AEs are near death and really just backup shoes by now, and I wished I’d known to condition them to have prevented some of the deep cracking in their uppers.) Finally, it’s nice to stay on top of the heels and change them before you start chewing into the heel block. This is a rather simple job and often can be done at a local shoe repair place.

    Great Video! I have a question: Do you think than a 7 fold tie or 12 fold tie (like the George Cleverly) is that much better than a 3 fold with a nice insert of wool or cotton. Which drapes and looks the best?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Joshua - I don't necessarily think that a 7- or 12-fold tie makes a "much better" tie than a 3-fold. These ties require an exceptional amount of silk, which is why they are so much more expensive, and is more about luxury than anything else. There is no question that the ties have a very luxurious hand and beautiful drape because of all of the silk, but at a distance, one would be hard-pressed to differentiate a 7-fold tie vs a 3-fold tie.
      The ties that George Cleverley has come out with for their 60th Anniversary are very nice, and if you are considering buying one, I would certainly not stop you!

    Serious question, Is there any point in going higher than 10 Bucks for a Tie?
    My ties wear out on the bottom end cause im working in an office enviroment and sitting is a thing, after about 2-3 Years in rotation (about 20-30 ties, but the favorites wear out quicker ofc) anyways, no matter if i spend 10€ or 100€. So i tend to go for light patterned checks or striped or even unicolor, mostly blue and red/burgundy cause they fit nearly any other color well, but dont spend anything beyond 25. I have some higher end ties for special ocassion, like important meetings, family events and so but on a regular basis, its like the rest of my wardrobe, it has to fit, blend in well and stand the test of daily wear and tear while no breaking the bank.

      I've thought about doing one of these... but I honestly try to carry as little as possible in my pockets. I absolutely hate having bulky items in my pockets, as I find it uncomfortable and that it disrupts drape. So, because of this, I really do not carry that much.
      For business or while I'm traveling, I do, though, always have my briefcase, which is really just a large overnight bag. It is essentially my man purse and allows me to carry anything I want.

    I'm a lazy guy and I tend to not leave myself time to really get dressed in the mornings. So, as a time saving measure I slip my tie off over my head and leave it tied so all I have to do it put it on and tighten the knot. Is this bad for tie? Be honest, I can take it.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure... my only concern would be that it permanently creases the fabric. You could just learn how to tie your tie faster... I've gotten better with practice. On the tail of the tie there is a diagonal seam where the pattern is sewn together (most ties constructed from three pieces of silk). I like to identify where this lines up relative to the collar stay sleeve on the underside of my tie -- saves me a lot of time of trial and error to get the length correct.

    Very practical ties but they are for penguins not for typical American Americans. The length of these ties is 58 inches. If you are more than five feet and five inches tall, forget it's not ties for you, they are too short. Kirby sees himself and people of his height, everything taller does not exist according to him. Otherwise, he would be sorry for selling neckties for low-rise men

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're are going to begin stocking longer 62" ties. Should be here by March. Especially in our permanent, non-seasonal collection. On a seasonal basis, it's very difficult to stock multiple lengths.

    • @niemago
      @niemago 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am very glad that you will have longer neckties. If I can suggest anything, please, trust me, I know what I am saying, I am not a very tall man, but I am certainly a tall man. I have six feet and four inches, almost five. Please believe me, the tie length of 62 inches is too short. People of such height as me is very much in the states, and we are potential clients. I know what I am looking for and the patterns that you showed in this movie are patterns that I saw with my grandfather, dad, but I do not have such designs myself. Please do not treat what I write wrongly, but with the length of 62 inches I will not be your client, and I would like to buy these classic, not flashy neckties. The minimum length is 65 inches, but there is one condition, each such tie in its narrowest place must be wide at a minimum of 3.8 cm. Such a tie width will allow you to freely tie a proportional knot. Otherwise, the node will always be small, do you like small tie knots? I do not like large tie knots. With my height they have to be proportional to my head, my height and neck, I like nodes slightly slender and slightly longer. Please do not worry if you decide that you will order ties only 62 inches long. I have my years and my height has often been a limitation when it comes to clothing. Best wishes, I wish you the right decisions, and cordial people around.@@kirbyallison
