Brat-Roll: it‘s a herring fried in a pan with a coating of flour, then marinated in vinegar, therefore the sour taste. It is also called ‚Brathering‘. It‘s actually a fish pickle.

Please, if you ever find the time, visit a restaurant in northern Germany, and then eat some Scholle, for example Finkenwerder art, with potatoes. That is real seafood.
Remoulade Sauce might be nice, but it also hides the taste of the seafoods. It’s more of a fast food type of seafood you tried.

For some years we were going to the North Sea for vacation a lot. We were visiting many of the big islands and learned how to get those tiny shrimps out of their shell, so we always bought 500 or 1000 grams (depending on our hunger) of cooked only shrimps for breakfast and for dinner, making „Nordseekrabbenbrötchen“ and/or „Nordseekrabbenomlette“ in our apartment. In my opinion, those North Sea Shrimps have a little bit of sweet taste, when eaten just as you can buy them from local fishermen.

North Sea shrimps (Latin: Crangon crangon) from the North and Baltic Seas are commonly referred to as North Sea shrimps, usually shrimps for short, as well as porren or garnet. They are also sometimes referred to as "shrimps" or "beach shrimps", "Krevetten" (from French "crevette" - there also generally for shrimps), "knat" or "grey crabs".
They are usually smaller, but because of their habitat they are tastier than the mostly caught Atlantic crabs, such as the Arctic prawn (Pandalus borealis). That's why they're always worth ordering when dining out in Northern Germany. The Finkenwerder Art plaice, which is served with North Sea shrimps, is always recommended as a dish.
However, I also recommend trying boiled or steamed fish with a fine sauce, as is offered in good restaurants. Constantly frying fish is exhausting in the long run. 😉

I just had to add two things, first: Willa is so lucky (although she doesn't know it yet) to be able to try so many amazing foods and tastes during your time in Germany. And second, I could die for that Krabbensuppe that Tanner had! You can buy Lacroix Krabbensuppe in a can from Edeka (well, in North Germany you can), and it's very delicious, but VERY expensive compared to what a can of soup typically costs in Britain. Two years ago, because of the pandemic and being unable to visit Germany, I started making my own Krabbensuppe according to a recipe on the Edeka website. It's not difficult, just prawns or shrimps, some chopped leeks, cream, potatoes and spices. And it is also very tasty.

That wind can be really unnerving. Especially when the sand is picked up and constantly blown onto your skin (face).
We vacationed once in the Netherlands. Not wanting to rent a Strandkorb we immediately built our Strandburg just to get somewhat out of the wind. In my youth we regularly made holidays there. We always carried with us a tent. A must on the North Sea. For shadow and protection from the wind.

Schleswig-Holstein is where my German relatives live and where I go to visit. You certainly tried a great selection of seafood. The menu contained so many delicious dishes. The Germans do fried potatoes especially well, and the addition of a good portion of shrimps and that fried egg really makes for a tasty meal. Americans tend to say "shrimp", whereas we Brits always say shrimps plural. Also, I've never heard Americans refer to prawns, the larger shrimps that either are peeled or you have to pull the heads and legs off. Prawns are, I suppose, like a smaller version of langoustines. We don't seem to get crayfish in Britain, which is a shame, because I'd love to try a crayfish boil like in Louisiana.

In all German speaking areas I have been to so far, they are very good at soups and/or stews, like Gulash. I go for any regional version when it is cold. It really fills your belly and the warmth spreads from inside and out. It is simply great food for cold, rainy/snowy, windy days.
For seafood, I´ll have the shrimps any day! :D They take a little time to eat though, so for a quicker meal, the Backfisch is truly great. And you are completely right about the Remoulade! :)

When you're at the north sea, try Krabben ("Granat") fresh from the fishers in a harbour, they sell it fresh off the boat. It's already cooked on sea, but you have to remove the shells ("Krabben pulen") yourself. Also try Schwarzbrot mit Krabben and Spiegelei, it's a bit like the dish you had in the restaurant but with the shrimp on black bread instead with the potatos.

One reason for the high price of the crabs (Garnelen) is the fact that due to a lack of staff that peels them most of them are taken by truck to Morocco to be peeled and then transported back - hardly believable but true.

TIP: Don't buy those shrimp buns !!! If you want shrimps try to buy them right off the boat. The shrimps get collected and then shipped down to Africa to get peeled. When they come back from Marocco they are already 2 weeks old ! If you have to buy them off the trailer or at a shop ALWAYS go for the unpeeled ones.
Don't waste your money on Surimi ! It's just fish fillet waste that got shredded and then glued together by enzymes. The red color is actually paint to make it look like crab meat.
    It's not worth the money.

Best sea food in Northern Germany is "Scholle Finkenwerder Art". European plaice, fried whole or fillet, topped with bacon pieces and fried potatoes on the side. The fish is very mild and soft.
Cuxhaven is not the architectural most interesting place ... I would only go there to catch a ferry to the island of Helgoland, which is really intersing

Oh man, that’s crazy! When we were in DC a few years back we had a Lobster Roll from Jake’s? (Can’t remember the exact place), and we think it was $25 for a small one. So, yes… compared to that price it’s a bargain 😂

The Baltic Sea coast and especially in the area of the former GDR is really not known for good seafood. Exceptions are really good (and expensive) fish restaurants. But you can find them everywhere in Germany, at least in the big cities.

    Hi there, why to taste I called it artificial fish when you can get frsh onces. Well, the hering is one of the healthiest fish anyway, lots of omega 3, and mostly you can get it as Rollmops(sour), or Brathering, or in Sahnesauce or even fresh and you can make your own marinade. My recipe later. I love the scenes...blowing in the wind. I am sure Willa didnt care about. I can imagine how excited Willa would have been to see the choo choo. When you show her this vid and she already got older, how do you will argue to her that you didnt point out to her ? You are right, you have to taste so many different food to find out which one is tasty for you. Have a nice time to discover the north. Here the recipe of my favourite hering marinade: 4 gewässerte Salzheringsfilets; 2 gelbe Zwiebeln; 0,5 dl feingehackter Dill Lake: 2 EL Essigessenz; 2 EL Öl; 0,75 dl Zucker; 2 dl Tomatensaft;
6 zerstoßene Schwarzpfefferkörner; 5 EL Sherry
Die Heringsfilets gut abspülen. In schmale Stücke schneiden.

Ah we can see that. It really can be unfair how bodies can react (or not act) to certain foods. We believe that there should be no shame in larger body sizes… or any body size! That’s the beauty of being human. 💛 What you don’t see in this video is our daily lives and how we eat at home, our normal portion sizes & how active we are. We believe balance and moderation in all things! 😊 Sending you love?
