TMNT Mutant Mayhem - Why Every Turtles Series Fails

- With the teaser trailer of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem just being released, NeverChris reviews the recent reaction videos as well as the series past, looking at the 1987 series, Next Mutation, the original movie trilogy, the 2003 series, Fast Forward, Back to the Sewers, the TMNT 2007 movie, the Michael Bay movies, the 2012 series, and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All of these TV series are compared against what I refer to The Turtle Cycle where I demonstrate how the series always goes downhill after a strong start. Will Mutant Mayhem be another strong start or just a part of the disappointment in the last cycle?

Honestly? I think you just have a different taste than others when it comes to this franchise. While you bring great evidence and a much appreciated history lesson on TMNT lore on a business aspect, your take on a TMNT property being bad is based solely on whether it’s dark and gritty or “watered down” for kids.
As a long term fan of the franchise (even reading the IDW comics), I really loved Rise. It did a lot with the characters that was honestly refreshing to see. There’s a true family dynamic at display. Splinter is much more their father than their master, which immediately erases any toxic tension between the brothers. Raph gets to be letter because he’s the oldest, while Leo gets to have more character than just “the leader”. Even Donnie gets to actually be a mad scientist, while Mikey can be a sensitive artist. And even April gets more spunk in that adaptation, making her an actually fun character you want to see more of outside of any weird romance plot. This show was perhaps the best tv adaptation the Turtles ever had.
I also noticed that when you touched on the Michael Bay movies, you never even talked about why that movie was bad outside of them looking hideous. Basically saying “it’s good as long as you turn your brain off”, meanwhile you didn’t give that excuse to Rise that has the most stellar animation of all the shows. It just feels like from your perspective that dark equals better.
I do agree that the original movie was perhaps the best adaption we have thus far on a tonal level, being able to respect the comic book roots while still embracing the fun nature of the animated series.
All in all, to answer your question on why adults are excited for this non edgy movie about mutated teenage turtles? Is because it looks good. The animation is banger, the character designs are spectacular, and the passion is felt. Especially in them actually hiring teenagers to voice these characters and make everything more authentic. On top of that, we also understand that while this is a movie that can be enjoyed by older fans and such, we aren’t the target audience. The kids are.
If you prefer your turtles a specific way? That’s completely fine. The TMNT franchise is flexible enough to be portrayed in a variety of ways. Just don’t try to speak for others.
Dude I agree with you so much I’m a fan of rise as well and I just didn’t like how he wrote it off as being childish and not worth watching and I do get it it’s just his opinion but there’s just a few things I just simply don’t agree with
I'm a fan of rise of the tmnt and i disagree with your take of saying that everyone in the show were flanderized or are just carbon copies of mikey which is not true, and although the show was more focus on comedy that doesn't mean it's a 'kiddy show or childish' .The series do have serious moments, it does have a serious plot , and even though the characters in the show act so different compared to other versions of them , the show still stays true to who the characters are at they're core . But i do understand that"s just your opinion and i respect that ,and I’m not saying you shouldn't feel the way that you feel about the show either , but rise isn't a bad show granted ,it's not a perfect the show it does hasn’t it's problems, but it isn't as bad as you think it is
Adult sensibilities? it’s called the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a reason. It has always tried to take its self seriously, despite its ridiculously stupid premise. Every iteration has had its strength and weaknesses. it has done something better than the last iteration. My only hope for this new iteration is that it goes on longer than than the RISE ITERATION and that it only stays a movie series, rather than becoming a TV show
Finally someone gets it.
...so anyways, as of right now current fans that grew up on 2003/2012 are actually enjoying Rise and still participate in that fandom, and we're all pretty hyped to see Mutant Mayhem. I'll see y'all in theaters August 4th 😎🤙🏼
Doesn't go argue against the vid just cope
I think this guy never watched Rise or realized it’s more so the networks fault for it not succeeding just take a look now at how popular it is
yea but why that version of that turtles actually works! but mutant mayhem is just too fucking woke
@@greenlight385
No it isn't.
@@dylansharp8471 no i meant why rise works it because that one feels like a more modern take of the 198 version but feels so different that it actually create its own fanbase
So it seems Mutant Mayhem has fallen victim to “contemporary reimagining”, narrative and character alterations. It has lost the core elements that made it timeless. 1990s movie, even being as old as it is, it captured a balanced weight between the cartoon and the original comics. It is one of those movies that you can return to, not just for nostalgia, but for a beautifully orchestrated mixture of story, cinematography, drip fed reveals, dark and light sensibilities
Bullshit.
Because you may not have liked other ninja turtles stuff before does not mean the movie will be bad. Not all people have to not like the trailer or other shows and movies.
The 2012 series start with a good beginning but I feel like the last episode was a slap to face because every victory and defeat feel empty because rewatching we the audience know they will not get their happy ending but the 2003 series got a happy ending, in which make the series more rewatchable
Lmaoooo what are you talking about? Rise has a lot of fans. Just because you didn’t like the style of the show doesn’t mean that “every TMNT fan” didn’t like it. What a reductive analysis
Okay I am sorry but once you got to the point of TMNT 2 the secret of the ooze, which basically was a box office hit and everyone and I mean EVERYONE sure some probably didn't, but enjoy the movie and is quite memorable than the first movie with its lines and quotes, while even delving bit more into how the turtles were bor and such. Despite the first movie giving us the introduction and how Splinter informs April about them and such.
The second movie gave us a better explanation of how their mutation worked. Also you...are seriously mis informed if you thought the 2000 CGI turtle movie was supoose to be a reboot WOW! IT was not a reboot, it was practically and if you actually paid attention, I believe was supposed to wrap up everything from the 2000 animated series in a way, while hinting and foreshadowing that Shredder wioth the foots was coming back, but never gone anywhere with it.
HOW the heck or flying fudge was that suppose to be a reboot when clearly it wasnt a reboot whatsoever. I mean the movie LITERALLY has April searching for Leo after he felt like he needed more training possibly from the ending of Season 5, where if memory serves- but someone please inform me on this. Did something that was practically against his moral and ninja way that he went into seclusive to train by himself and find something to bring him back from his I believe screw up or something?
Okay I am done ugh, all I am hearing from you is "Since its not MINE TMNT show and not the way I want it. ALL of it is automatic garbage and thus I will not except change." When its been cleared many. many times before thtat TMNT will and always have a stronger reaction with newer generation of kids and family, than previous ones and you aseriously need to learn to actually give something a try and if its not for you, then just watch something else instead of being a nostalic fan nerd who can't get over the fact the turtles they once knew, is SURPISE aimed more for kids.
ALSO, SOURCE, WHERES YOUR SOURCE, SOURCE, SOURCE ANYWHERE? WHERE'S THE SOURCE of your information about these semi claims your making -_- oh wait you didn't bother giving any source and just grab whatever "Place the nostalgic how series went bad picture" and just went ahead and only detail out YOUR problem with the franchise.
Site your sources next time, cause I and actual people with common sense CANNOT believe just word of mouth. The minute you did not offer source is where your first mistake was and just having us believe word of mouth, your mouth and other people who...possibly didn't link their sources either. Or show them, but just wanted to go on a long tangent slash rant that the series has always died out....even though Turtles similar to Simpsons, One piece and any shows that had been going on ever since the 1980's has survived this long and has always made good and profitable things or whatever...I don't think turtles will die what you are saying in this video.
Also, Nickalodeon stopped Micheal bay from making the Turtles Aliens or did you forgot about that nortion and completely ignored it? Cause we were gonna have Mutant ALIEN turtles that would have also been a thing in the 2010s...remember that if Nickalodeon did not step in and told him no. We would have Aliens as the turtles. Sigh sorry but I know it will be looking like a rant but I seriously need to let it out and say that providing any source or claims you made within the video, doesn't help your argument. If ya did however, I am sure your video would have recieved in a better light. Next time please show source and information you are finding these claims.
With Secret of the Ooze, I agree with you that it was a box office hit as the franchise was riding extremely high at the time. However, sentiments have waned a lot over time from what I've seen with lapsed fans still gushing to this day about how great the first movie was while I never hear anything positive about the second movie except how amusing the Vanilla Ice inclusion was (who has become a bit of a living meme with millennials).
The way I've always interpreted the continuity of the 2007 movie, which is something I first researched back in 2007, was that it was its own separate continuity but that it was borrowing from existing developments at the same time. I researched this again for this video to which Peter Laid in his blog states that it takes place in its own universe (Blast from the Past #654: April 1, 2005: Re: first pass and 2 other things) The director Kevin Munroe has a separate interpretation (Director Kevin Munroe revisits Imagi’s TMNT franchise) as a separate interpretation saying that the movie exists within the continuity of the previous 3 movies. Neither of these two sources reference the TV series. I think we can argue that it is a soft reboot and not be inaccurate since it is essentially its own thing.
I didn't intend to give the impression that I was blowing off each reboot. I came in with the 1987 series, which is the series I have the most nostalgia for, but I consider the 2003 series better. I also recognize that the 2012 series is a solid series (before it went downhill) which I have even less nostalgia for. However, it is the content at the end of each cycle, as the series crashed and burned, where I believe the series continuously went downhill. Do you even disagree with me that Next Mutation, Back to the Sewers, and Rise were clear step downs from what was previously being released and that it was a bummer to see such strong series get ended (particularly the 2003 series before getting mangled and the 2012 series before getting mangled)?
I appreciate your feedback in regards to sources. I try to include annotations in videos going forward. A lot of what I try to cover though is the subjective feelings people seemed to have at the time that isn't always backed up by surveys but instead the sentiments people seemed to have, in general. Unfortunately, these types of sentiments seem to be lost over time and so I think it's important to make reference to them since it's a part of the real story that took place. I received similar feedback in my Game Boy retrospective video where I specifically tried to call out childhood-sentiment that never gets documented anywhere specifically because it's the type of information that doesn't have clear sources with numbers and charts. But yes, there are some elements I could have made better references for.
You're right about how the Turtles brand is too strong to die at this point. However, I do think that TMNT leaves fans feeling burned much more often than say One Piece or Pokemon or other forever-running series that don't have strong demographic shifts out of no where.
Yeah, that is ridiculous that Michael Bay was going to have the turtles as aliens. I really didn't intend to dive deep into those movies and I tried to stress that they were entertaining as a spectacle and that they weren't necessarily worth watching for quality storytelling.
@@neverchris I am actually glad you read through my comment. Most don't generally do that so definitely got my respect on that.
You be surprise how many people do like the second movie. downside is that because society nowadays, anything and everything will become a meme- all the while people blindly hating on topics that they did not grow up with the movie, or didn't bother giving the movie a shot. So gotta be careful where you hear people who hasn't seen the movie and only know of it by memes or people out right making fun of the Go ninja" song Vanilla ice performed in the movie. The third movie yeah all agreements there trut me, which why I did not bring that one up lol.
Hm it also probably didn't help the way they had written the script, if or is its own continuity- it felt like it was an extension slash added depth to Leonardo beliefs and such, especially Leo saying to Kurai "The shredder is gone, why are you still around" or something along those lines, implying it takes directly after the 2003 animated series. So the confusion of it being a independent universe or not even if the directors or producers word of mouth. The script in said movie really makes it sound like it was intended to be that way.
Um reason I didn't bring up Next Mutation is because I never watched it thus why I didn't bring it up cause the account, I did not wanted to look ignorant or sound ignorant of a show I never watched. All I know of it was the Power rangers crossover...but that is it. As well as Back to the Sewers , I never saw it or watched it- thus I did not comment about them eheh.
I think however and hear me out, your bing a slightly unfair to Rise of the TMNT show. Yeah it is a bit more on the goofy side of things but the premise and aspects of the Turtles facing off or meeting slash showing Japanese Yokai monsters within the series was a interesting twist. All the while the animation and cherography of the fights and animation thus far for ANY nick shows is quite up there. Then they did a Series finally with a Movie on netflix, haven't watched it yet- but I been hearing quite interesting things of how the characters grow and react to the situation they are in, all the while going all out with the production money. But yeah I wouldn't say Rise of TMNT is horrible or terrible. Just different.
Hm, I see if you do make or site sources. I suggest make them into the description box for the sources, while making or make mentions that "Click the annotation on the upper right corner to see the source" or something. So this way it won't be lost when people are focusing on the video, but won't or doesn't cat ch the annotation in time.
Sigh that's the downside to running series as such I listed. Considering the demogrsaphic that grew up at the time of said series or shows, are now adults and won't have that same feeling or views of their beloved series like when they were kids or teens. On the account besides growing up you can't exactly enjoy the things you used to as a kid. It won't have the same feeling when watching it as an adult. Thus nostalgic despite being alright and good, can also be bad and terrible when nobody be mature about things and honestly let go and understand the series or show you once enjoy isn't for them any more. It's why the demographic always bounces around whenever a new literation of the show comes on. It won't be the same. It sadly the truth and why some time- a series should try and stop if it doesn't catch eyes of the public as much like it used too.
Tell me about it, I am glad Nickelodeon put their foot down and put a stop to it- sadly, I think whatever script he had would've been a mess either way. Spectacles and fancy explosions and such without much care for what he probably only did it just to get money like most porduces/directors of movies nowadays.
I can't say much about the new movie as...sigh and I am not defending it nor dissing it, but I myself is starting getting tired of these "retelling/rebooting" back to the beginning with recent movies and never adding anything to extend universes and such. They did it with Batman, they did it with Scooby Doo, they did it with Superman and Marvel another one who's doing the same thing with "Let's retell the story of the heros or MC starting all over again and rising to the task" cliche...its starting to get annoying. GRANTED- as I stated earlier where even long running series can have burns out too- its the same here where people get burn out with all these reboots or retelling from the beginning. It starts to get annoying.
But yeah- I respect you took the time to read ad not lose your cool like most youtubers who make videos like these and took the time to be respectful in your response, while clearifying things while posting and replying. I will apologize, I just am tired of seeing "Cycle" this and "Cycle that" as the Sonic community uses it EVERY freaking time, it gets tiresome and infuriating having to hear words of mouth, without anyone giving aynythig a chance and only base their opinions off from 1 trailer alone and go "YUP THE SERIES IS DEAD"
That was mostly where my anger stemmed from. Because when youtubers use them, it makes them smug and come off cocky as if what they say is fact and true without sourcing their proofs or research...or lack of hinting at doing research. So yeah that was mostly my anger stem from.
It's really sad that TMNT could do well if many of these executives from companies like Nickelodeon would take more chances in delivering great quality instead of worrying about lining up their own pockets because they are only trying to take the easy route. If there were a couple of things in the recent times where the TMNT property did well and taking a chance at being phenomenal then it would have to be the ongoing comic from IDW and the Batman Vs. TMNT movie. For the IDW comic, I never have been this extremely addicted to the whole storyline as it remained consistent with its themes and character development since the beginning, and the Batman Vs. TMNT just made me appreciate how great of a movie it was since the first TMNT movie from 1990.
I feel like TMNT is in limbo with appealing to all demographics as Nickelodeon only seems to cater towards a selected age range when it comes to televised and cinematic media. It's like they try to start off with appealing to all age groups but falter when they get midway through a show with being dumbed down for no reason. If Nickelodeon wants to do the Ninja Turtles justice then they need to take a bigger risk in doing two, separate shows where one is exclusive to Nickelodeon that is for the kid audience while the other should be exclusive to a platform like HBO Max where it can appeal to the older crowd. Heck, I always wanted there to be a show that follows the IDW continuity since there is so much material to already work with, but we still have never received it to this day.
As for the new movie by Seth Rogan, that was already a red flag from the beginning since his reputation with making movies is not the best. Plus, the teaser trailer is already filled with red flags just from looking at it. One positive I can say I like is the rotoscope animation that was similarly done with Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. However, everything else about it just seems extremely mid. Michelangelo's voice should have been Donatello's voice, Donatello should have sounded more intelligent aside from being a nerd, being corny up the wazoo, and why in the world does Master Splinter sport an afro with his character design? To me, it seems like Nickelodeon just wants to continue riding the train with making the TMNT dumbed down just for the sake of being only for kids and not everyone.
TMNT may not be in any sort of jeopardy at this time, but it will if this continues without any stop. TMNT is supposed to be an even blend between seriousness and comedy, but continuing to build up the latter doesn't always wield strong results. The term "teenage" doesn't always mean that it should be a dumbed down property as it can also be serious on several degrees.
There really seems to be so much unrealized potential with the franchise that is never capitalized on. I still need to read the IDW comics though which is one of the reasons I didn't discuss it but it is nice to see a branch of the franchise still running strong after 11 years. It is sad to see the original Mirage run sputter out though after so many years.
You had me at the beginning of the video and then you lost me at the rise part, then slightly got me back to mutant mayhem but still lost me, I feel like you’re thesis has merit and truth but I feel like you’re selling rise short based on the tone and look of the show, now if you don’t like it because it’s not your cup of tea then that’s fine, but rise despite it’s more lighter toned nature is actually pretty good of a show, and this is coming a tmnt fan who’s enjoyed this series since the 2003 show as I grew up watching both that and the 2012 shows, as for mutant mayhem I’m willing to give it a chance but I’m expecting anything positive specifically because this a Seth rogen movie, and I just don’t trust his work, either way I still find your video essay very informative and insightful
I appreciate the conflicting opinion. I agree that Rise isn't exactly exactly Next Mutation in terms of quality and that's something I should have pointed out. I do think that Rise was a bit of a rug-pull though where they switched from 2012 to the more comedic series which seemed more in line with what the network wanted (something safer for Nickelodean) while dumping everything 2012 built up.
Cutting off a series with an ongoing story like this always feels like a burn. The network interference prior to cutting it off made it even worse. To reference a Japanese series, I think Naruto pulled it off better where TV Tokyo and the other studios behind it maintained their flagship series while also, on the side, created a comedy spinoff that ran for 51 episodes. The spinoff was kind of amusing, not great, but since it wasn't replacing anything for the sake of showing a safer show, it was far less agitating.
First 2 live action CGI movies were failures and the 3rd planned movie was cancelled by paramount. 2012 Version just kinda stopped and didnt really end cuz Nick wanted spongebob to be the mascot instead. Rise of the TMNT Also failed and was moved to Netflix. Yeh Im noticing a pattern here.
The 2012 series DID end though. Season 4 ended the storyline, Shredder was defeated and Splinter avenged. Then they did an extra season of what if scenarios for fun/just one off things that wouldn't have fit into the main narrative since it was very laser focused on its story. It's probably the only TMNT show that got to end on its own terms and didn't overstay its welcome I feel
The most recent media for the series in familiar with is the new beat-em-up game… wasn’t that really well-received?
That's an interesting point and yeah, it was very good although also a low budget throw-back to the 1987 series and games. Really, there's the IDW comic as well that some people like. I was mainly addressing the main series that try to get new people into the franchise and the recent game probably wasn't making many new fans nor was it connected to anything current.
The “turtle cycle” is absolutely something you just made up. Just because you say it’s a thing doesn’t make it so 😂
This is such a sloppy misfire on all accounts for a take.
Every made tmnt adaption needs to be distinct from one another, and the fact this vid misses the point is why another reason you constantly jilted whiners are almost never satisfied, no one making this for you, but its intended demographic with many other made TMNT adaptation, love or hate it it has managed to survive by attuning to one basic trait of a ninja: adapting , and you seem to forget the teenage part, like how boring is this?
My contention is that every adaptation of TMNT doesn't need to be distinct because we don't need to have this many adaptations of TMNT. Theoretically, if the series wasn't run into the ground with creative changes being made every time the series got popular, there might not be as many cancellations and reboots. The cycle of changing the creative direction as soon as the series gets popular, waning interest in the series, cancellation, and subsequent new series aimed at a full on younger demographic can only serve to burn existing fans. This cycle burns a lot of goodwill and I would argue makes a lot of fans bitter with the franchise and it doesn't need to be that way. There has never been a run of TMNT that hasn't crashed and burned. I suppose it's an ode to the strength of the brand to be able to recover each time, but ideally I argue that this shouldn't have to keep happening.
A part of what I was trying to say in the video is that there has been a shifting intended demographic over the years and that it can be frustrating, particularly when the franchise takes an abrupt left turn to go younger.
The "teenage" part of the title was initially a part of the joke in stressing how ridiculous the series was as a goof take on Daredevil, although yes, the turtles literally are teenagers. There's a very wide range in regards to how teenagers act and how they express their age. When I mentioned flanderization, I was referring to the trend of each reboot of the property trying harder and harder to emphasize the potential goofy antics of teenagers. They seem to be going particularly hard in making them comedy characters this time around which I suppose can be done properly but isn't required nor has every successful reboot done this.
I think this video with it’s view to like ratio well summarizes the divide between the tmnt fandom of the angry vocal few and the rest of the community many of whom the series was actually intended for, the fact we can get an idea of just how few agree with you through said 75 likes makes the cancelation of shows like rise, which had a banger story and amazing art(get a few episodes in to where the artists got comfortable to really see it) all the sadder, thousands of people loved it, and 75 didn’t
Hey now... the like to dislike ratio is still in my favor 😜
You just got to sit down and think about it first they are supposed to be teenagers and how teens act in different generations so I`m for one okay with this version of the turtles in fact I pretty much love every incarnation of this character no matter how old you get or no matter if they keep changing the turtles look, personality or anything end of the day they are just fictional characters who are teens in different years of how teens supposed to act like
You know there are examples of American cartoons that remained the same throughout the years in terms of integrity and kept on running and didn’t have to switch up things too drastically to keep up with the times. Avatar: The last Airbender is a great example of this. A long running show and they didn’t really have to change the recipe too much and never had to change how the characters were acting or behaving. Even The Legend of Korra was consistent with its predecessor’s art style and character development. Both series were a continuous story that was just good and didn’t have to be gimmicky to draw people in because you had a good storyline solid character development and consistent art style.
On the Japanese side of things there is Dragon Ball Z which Didn’t have to change the characters drastically and rewrite who they were in order to maintain a fan base and appeal to new people. I just think that when you think about selling toys first before making a great series that you’re gonna have this problem that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had. Totally OK for people to enjoy the various iterations of TMNT. For me, the constant rebranding and identity crisis doesn’t really make me want to watch it or have much hope for this new series.
rise wasn't that bad
atleast the movie wasn't

I wanted to like Mutant Mayhem. I watched it with a open mind but it was just bad. Just bad it’s living in the shadow of what came before. The changes are too underwhelming. They’re not even Ninjas, making the title a lie. Splinter being reducied to a lame dad stereotype is disgraceful to previous iterations, not mention wasting Jackie Chan. April is not April, she’s Irma. I know Seth Rogan’s style of humor and it just doesn’t fit in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The same problem with the Michael Bay movies.
I'm detecting a lot of bullshit in this comment.
They're Ninjas. Trust me.
Looks better than Rise at least
