29:10, wailmer is the BOUNCE whale pokemon, the connection to beach balls, and wailord to blimps, is 100% intentional, the line is about the idea of whales leaping from the water.
Hariyama’s “costume” is meant to represent the ceremonial and sponsorship aprons worn during the beginning sumo tournaments, or the little bundles of hard fabric sticks that are also a part of sumo belts or “mawashi”. To me, he doesn’t read wrestler at all - it was extremely focused execution of sumo in his design.
47:28 Shuppet is a sheet ghost, but is ALSO based on a teru teru bozu like Castform (which is why the dex entry says they gather under the eaves of houses). If the dolls ""succeed" they are given sake as a reward, but if they don't bring good weather after being hung out, they are punished with "death" by beheading, iirc reenacting the tragic end of a specific buddhist priest. Which leads into Banette's idea of a forsaken stuffed animal (as well as voodoo dolls to a lesser extent), they're both dolls seeking vengeance for how their masters wronged them.
1:06:33 while I feel like the criticism of Jirachi is fair, I do wish you had commented on the eye on it's stomach; it's a strikingly creepy feature for such a cute, inoffensive pokemon to have, especially when the eye has this emotionless yet intense glare that is both uncomfortably human and yet full of an inhuman strength or knowledge. Combined with the fact that one of the last moves Jirachi learns is it literally granting it's trainer's wish for the opposing pokemon to faint, Jirachi always struck me as a sort of trickster god, something that's compelled to grant wishes, and while wishes are usually made with whimsy and good-faith in mind, it doesn't shy away from the very real fact that sometimes you wish someone was dead.
My pet theory about Grovyle is that it's based off a modern interpretation of a raptor (dromeosaurs), with the leaves representing feathers. That would tie with Sceptile's inspiration being another dinosaur (Dilophosaurus). If that were true in any capacity it would be pretty impressive considering that the idea of raptors having feathered wings, tail fans or crests was nearly nonexistent outside of professional paleontology back in 2003.
The clampearl evos also have some "don't judge a book by its cover" info in the pokedex, with gorebyss being the violent one and huntail being the friendly one
All your criticisms against Mega Swampert are exactly the reasons I love it xD The design definitely leans into its weird stat distribution for a water type, and just says "Let's just go punch everyone, that's sounds like a good day."
Something I like about Kyogre's design that I don't see mentioned frequently is that it's tail resembles a phylogenetic tree, or more simply a tree of life, representing the connection between land and sea as most/all land-dwelling organisms from bacteria to humans all have ties to ancestral aquatic organisms. Not sure how intentional it is but I noticed it a while ago and it really bumped Kyogre up a few places on the list of my favorites!
hes right although I think thats more because of how good the other gen 3 starters are with water/ground and fire/fighting being some of the best types and to add to that marshtomp has an amazing move pool for its typing and only one weakness and Blaziken is almost as good but only takes off as an apex starter with speedboost
I know your Jirachi short is already filled with comments about it, but Jirachi DOES have a unique element: When it uses its move Doom Desire, the line on its belly opens up to reveal a third eye. I wish the 3rd eye was more prominent in Jirachi's design, but it IS there.
Watching through these pokemon shorts reminded me just how much I wish TB Skyen could be a narrator in a RPG styled as if it was made from a couple decades ago
Fun fact about Cradily! That's not a mouth, that's where it keeps its eyes. And those things around its neck aren't petals, they are grasping tentacles
Sorry man, i gotta disagree with the disrespect youve placed on my boi walrain's name. He is still a joyful animal, he has grown from an eager and naive child to a curious teenager to the delightful uncle who would bear hug you and tickle you wuth his magnificent mustache, he us still smiling even in the model you displayed. He appears at first glance to be large and intimidating but he is a Wonderfuo beast that just wants to rub his mustache and sideburns all over your face when your sad. I feel like he is the best capstone to the spheal evolution line. He is a wise jokester that can teach you to fix a flat on your truck and be there when you need someone outside of your immediate family. He is one of my favorite Pokemon.
Somehow, despite being an ice/water type, Walrein *feels* warm. It's kind an odd thing to say, but I mean emotionally warm. It feels like the sort of buddy that'd tell me 'everything will be okay.' if only in a way I could understand.

42:36 Claydol had left mw with the idea of an ancient golem back when i first encounter it. kind of a hot take but I actually really like marshtomp. It not only feels like a good middle portion from mudkip to swampert, but if it has the face only a mother could love I am its mother because I just think its cute.
55:26 I've been told it does in fact match the hoenn map around pacifilog, upside down, and the red spot marking where the cavern that unlocks the regi trio (and requires a relicanth) is located. I've never tried it to confirm whether that's true though.
Gardevoir line is actually supposed to be male-skewed, as seen by the gender ratio of Ralts in gen 3 games as well as it being based on castratos and similar concepts from theater and choirs and such, going up to Kirlia being a ballet dancer and Gardevoir, again, filling the castrato role but now as an adult. I suppose Gallade was meant to be another branch-off of theater as the gallant male lead of a play and/or hero in a novel. It's a shame Flygon didn't get a mega, according to the designers they just couldn't come up with one. I find it strange that in the generation for weather mechanics, the introductory gimmick mon for weather doesn't have a sandstorm version, and instead has a wind-implying form for hail despite sun and rain having properly defined and portrayed forms.

I wonder if Registeel was made to look so alien compared to its siblings on purpose? This is before Regigigas established itself as the trio leader, and I always kinda saw it as the Suicune to their Raikou and Entei. Especially since you need Regirock and Regice to encounter it in the first place, and steel is super effective against both of them. It's weird futuristic design establishes a degree of superiority compared to its more primitive counterparts, which I actually quite like.
Even though Treecko is my favorite of the three Hoenn starters, I can forgive your appraisal. Everyone has their own tastes and opinions and I respect that. Just make sure you don't talk shit about my little turtle or there will be hell to pay.
Actually now that you bring up the lotad Family i do think Lotad design is 100 based on mesoamerican people/cultures. I always though lotad is based on a "Metate" with the way its big lily pad head mixes with its tiny tiny legs. Metates are tools for grinding seeds and nuts from mesoamerica, you can find them from mexico to Costa rica.
Sorry if this comes off as "erm actually 🤓" but Lileep and Cradily are not plants and are actually based on animals called crinoids, also known as sea lillies. These critters are part of the echinoderm clade, making them relatives to sea stars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. Fossil crinoids actually go way back to the Ordovician about 488 million years ago! These fossil Pokémon hold a special place in my heart because, as you said, their plant-iness makes them look quite alien! If you've ever seen footage of sea lillies or feather stars then this makes even more sense. Crinoids themselves are incredibly plant like, with a root-like structure called the holdfast (hence the Root Fossil where they come from), a stem, and petal-like appendages that pick food particles out of the water column. Lileep and Cradily capture all these aspects perfectly, and I really appreciate them for that! Sorry again for the pseudo-lecture, I just want to set the record straight! Also, I think it's fun that Lileep and Cradily would, phylogenetically, be related to the Staryu line, Pyukumuku, the Mareanie line, and Pincurchin!
2:19 I think swampert is squatting in their main pose, not on all fours, but it’s still pretty close & an interesting posture, kinda like a spinosaurus.
I am here for my regular Makuhita/Hariyama propaganda posting, as my Hariyama Buster absolutely carried some of the harder fights in my early pokemon playthroughs and most of my Gen 3 Nuzlockes.
A large amount of the sub par models I am convinced would look ten times better with a different posture. Or as a sprite. I’m a big sprite fan they have a certain charm. And more personality.
I wouldn't say every Sprite is better. Pokemon like toxicroak, muk and the porygon line look really good in 3d more so than the sprites. It depends on the pokemon, really.
This being said, I think electrike is definitely more memorable, but whyyyyy put them in the same game?? I'm gonna use yamper, he's the new boi, I don't know a damn thing about battle stats so if I'm wrong I'm wrong but yamper has a heart shaped but so I'm picking him
I feel like the in game design of the treeko like is a bit unfortunate, but the ANIME depiction of ash’s treeko line is one of the coolest Pokemon I ever seen 🤣
I do think that spoink and grumpig are jokes about pearls before swine, actually. It’s a common enough expression even outside of the Bible (I didn’t know it was from the Bible actually!)
I'm so biased when it comes to this gen. It's finally been getting love in the TH-cam sphere the past few years, but for a while in the early 2010s everyone was harping about how AMAZING gen 4 was, and I was so bored by its designs and the aesthetic. That said, I recognize that Gen 3 also has some, hmm, gen 1 copycat duds for designs. Overall, I like gen 3's focus on nature in its designs, gives hoenn a real sense of connection to the designs. Johto, for example, felt a bit more random in their new pokemon and why they were there. You mention in your FF summon shorts when the main art director changes, and you've occasionally shown 2d vs 3d model comparisons. As the sugimori era is close to ending, it will be interesting to see the balance moving forward. Thanks for your honest opinions, cool to see an artist's perspective on aspects of pokemon's designs I've never considered before, your voice is always strong in these analyses
Great video! Here are some additional facts I found about some of my favorites- You're right that breloom doesn't really look like a fighting-type boxer, but the pokedex also mentions that breloom can stretch its arms out to punch people from a distance (which makes it look hilariously similar to Luffy in the pokemon anime). This hidden trick kind of works as a reference to how mushrooms can extend a surprisingly long distance underground. Additionally, Breloom might partly be inspired by Yoshi. Shroomush is very similar to a goomba, and it evolves into what is basically a mushroom-dinosaur as an extra reference to the Mario series. Nuzleaf might be partly based on Pinnochio. It's a liar made of wood with a long nose and a dark-grass typing. Besides a long-nosed Tengu, shiftry is probably also based on a white-haired nutcracker doll, which is easier to see when it opens its giant mouth. It's an extension from nuzleafs design because it goes from a kid made of wood to an old man made of wood. With a tengu nose and a nutcracker mouth, shiftry was destined to look weird from the very beginning. Rayquaza's fins and man-made elements may be a reference to kites (the toys, not the birds) since its the ultimate dragon-flying type that never touches the ground. The concept of dragon kites does somewhat tie into the idea of folklore and traditions from the past, but you have a good point that it does come out looking weirdly futuristic.
Great compiliation of a fantastic series of shorts, I love that three of my top 5 favourite pokemon lines got such glowing appreciation in this one in the claydol, baneette and spheal lines (and will forgive the slander against my boy cacturne XD ) looking forward to getting far enough to see the response my second fave golurk gets
Dude these shorts are so amazing I started watching them with that little video link that you put on them and now I get 1 hour of Pokémon yap sessions on my favorite generation
I really love how gen 3 and 4 go into the deep lore on the creation of the pokemon universe. I really dislike how gen 5 decided to start the series over again
I think I understand why the designs look so appealing to me. They were allowed to look rough and weird. Sure modern pokemon have some appeal but most of them are just an animal + a gimmick without the weirdness that makes a design fantastical.
You watch tbskyen pokemon for interesting character design breakdown with some interesting facts include I watch tbskyen pokemon video to hear the funny pronunciation of the names We are not the same
And also some 3d models make designs worse, talking about my favourite Exploud. Og ruby sprite with an open mouth is much more intimidating and kaiju like instead of some ugly frogmouthed maskot suit

Breloom is a kangaroo not a bird, thats why it talks about boxing too.
Skittys tail is a combo of the cattail plant and one of those paw-batting-type cat toys u s3e alot on top of scratching poles!!
I'm aware I only just asked about doing a series about Digimon designs, but I just realized I'd be far more interested in Monster Hunter designs
Jirachi works a lot better when you realize there's a third eye on it's stomach!
Gen 4 is going to be short since almost all of the added evolutions/baby forms have been covered… Munchlax was missed.
I cant forgive nintendo for putting electrike in the same gen they introduced yamper, quite literally another electric dog
This being said, I think electrike is definitely more memorable, but whyyyyy put them in the same game?? I'm gonna use yamper, he's the new boi, I don't know a damn thing about battle stats so if I'm wrong I'm wrong but yamper has a heart shaped but so I'm picking him
Roasting Treeko while calling Chimecho that way instead of Chime + Echo is diabolic 😂
I feel like the in game design of the treeko like is a bit unfortunate, but the ANIME depiction of ash’s treeko line is one of the coolest Pokemon I ever seen 🤣
That stick in his mouth gave him so much personality
It is crazy how often our opinions completely disagreed. Good vid. I enjoyed it
Bro gave the treecko line and Luvdisc the same score…..
I do think that spoink and grumpig are jokes about pearls before swine, actually. It’s a common enough expression even outside of the Bible (I didn’t know it was from the Bible actually!)
Relicanth is a map technically, you need it in the party (plus the whale) in order to get the Regis.
How did you interpret Breloom as a bird???
Spheal is the peak of pokemon designs imo
I love this series sm (and literally anytime you talk about pokemon, main channel or shorts), can’t wait for future gens ❤️
Wait, i thought Rayquaza had gotten inspiration also from Quetzaltoatl, aka, a god in mexica culture? it's literally a snake with feathers
Great video! Here are some additional facts I found about some of my favorites-
You're right that breloom doesn't really look like a fighting-type boxer, but the pokedex also mentions that breloom can stretch its arms out to punch people from a distance (which makes it look hilariously similar to Luffy in the pokemon anime).
I always hope that we get to one day see Jirachi open its stomach eye. Maybe give it an unsealed Hoopa glow up.
I love your explanation of Shroomish so much. The little mweh, the polite response, just incredible energy
No mention of the creepy stomach eye on jirachi?
16:28 Makuhita and Hariyama are my fav Pikachu look alikes. I don’t know why but every time I’ve had one it’s been so unnecessarily badass.
i cannot wait for his reviews of gen 6 and 8
i have been thinking of gulpin as some kind of slime
So excited for this video! Gen 3 was my first Pokémon game, so seeing them being talked about is super exciting. Thank you for making these, Sky! ❤
I really love how gen 3 and 4 go into the deep lore on the creation of the pokemon universe. I really dislike how gen 5 decided to start the series over again
I am a firm believer that Surskit and Masquerain are the most forgotten pokemon from gen 3.
Just so you know, you don't have to catch the luvdisk to get heart scales, just use thief or covet.
I think I understand why the designs look so appealing to me. They were allowed to look rough and weird. Sure modern pokemon have some appeal but most of them are just an animal + a gimmick without the weirdness that makes a design fantastical.
Regional forms are mostly nice but yeah newer gens are really hit or miss with gen 7 being the last one that had such an incredible new roster
But Gardevoir is officially based on a male, thats why male Kirlia can still become a Gardevoir
Roserade is an 80s shojo lesbian don’t @ me
You watch tbskyen pokemon for interesting character design breakdown with some interesting facts include
I watch tbskyen pokemon video to hear the funny pronunciation of the names
We are not the same
Brelloom is actually a kangaroo not a bird. Very badly stylised kangaroo imo, but still, thats why its a boxer.
And also some 3d models make designs worse, talking about my favourite Exploud. Og ruby sprite with an open mouth is much more intimidating and kaiju like instead of some ugly frogmouthed maskot suit
@@ilyatepeyolotich6459 yeah gamefreak really had 3d range from perfection to oh god why no god no nooo! It hasn't really reclaimed the original greatness many pokemon had
I feel it was unfair to rank Sableye as B without giving reasons where the design goes bad. It deserves an A 😭
